We're very excited to announce the launch of new fashion brand, James Lakeland on QVC on 18th August. This sophisticated womenswear brand can be found on many high streets and features versatile and wearable designs, all made in Italy. We caught up with the man himself to find out a little more…
Tell us how you got into fashion, and a little more about the brand
I worked at Benetton when I was 15 and my father had a manufacturing business in Italy so I learnt all about cut and design from a very early age. I knew straight away, when I was a child, that I loved clothes and that I wanted to work in this industry.
After working in Italy I came back to Britain and I worked for a design manufacturer and decided to set up my own business. I was importing from Italy but changing all the fabrics and styles. Then one of my manufacturers said to me, if you want to change everything I do why don’t you start your own brand? So I did – I started with 21 white sweaters and James Lakeland was born.
From that moment of purity it gave me a platform to design the clothes I loved, which have always been manufactured in Italy, and it has been a very exciting and often challenging career. I am very excited to be launching JL on QVC – it’s a milestone for my career.
What kind of women do you design for?
I design for the 25 plus woman, who appreciates cut, quality and design and who loves the Made in Italy seal of approval. My customer can be a size 8 or size 20, aged 25 or 85 but she has one thing in common, that is that she loves to look good and not be conned by the many fads the fashion industry throws at people.
What inspires your designs?
I spent a lot of time in Italy and there is a very strong influence, especially from Florence, Venice and Rome, where people still dress up and take great pride in their appearance. I also love the quirkiness of the British clientele who, in a way, have their own style and are not slaves to fashion trends.
What trends are you loving this season?
The block colours, the black and red, black and pink, are a great investment in a wardrobe and a fabulous trend. They remind me very much of the big Italian designers, Valentino, Prada and Gucci from the 80s. These are timeless trends that supersede fashion and last in women’s wardrobes forever.
