Have thoroughly enjoyed my week off including the four day Robert McKee course about screenwriting. For those interested I’ve put a couple of his witty quips at the bottom of the page, along with a couple of links that might interest you.
Being in the presence of like-minded people and one of the all-time expert Script Doctors was very rewarding I can tell you! Have come back raring to go – just got to do some writing now! And not just my blog- have found it quite a good displacement activity over the last few months – could you tell? But that’s not the point. So will be getting down to ‘business’ in future, and will keep you informed. And even though I haven’t been at work, it’s not stopped me shopping!
It’s back to work gently though I must say with a Today's Special Value on Sunday 14th November at midnight. I’m on late with Simon for a Thorntons TSV! Hard life!
Six weeks till Christmas
Oh gosh how is it only six weeks away from Christmas already? I always know that November flies by – how does that happen? And suddenly it’s December and I haven’t even written the cards – even though I bought the pack in July! And with fifteen nephews and nieces to cope with, I have my work cut out. Are you nearly done with the shopping? Or did you finish it ages ago? Which of you has finished earliest I wonder? Let me know!
I made Lauren’s day by letting her have her pressie early – the big plasma telly I bought from QVC last year. She and her student pals can watch TV and play Call of Duty on it now (endlessly!!) and not have to squint.
What is it about student life? Wish I knew – I lived at home when I was at the London School of Economics so never really did the whole student thing. One of the reasons I made sure my kids never missed out on it I suppose. Did you go to a campus university or wish you had? Which one? What was the best bit?
Finally I found another ‘funny’ for you when going through some of my video clips. Julia thought I was mad!
Do you know what I’m talking about? Did you call them that too? If so do let me know and make me feel like I didn’t make it up! Or maybe I did…
Best wishes and have a good week!
P.S. Just when I thought it was safe to drive past the vets, Holly – one of the older two Labradors – has got a tooth infection! I think the pet insurance company think I’m taking the mick! Mind you maybe I could recoup some of the costs with a performing pog – Daisy, over to you…
Another P.S. As promised here’s a clip of a short interview Robert McKee was kind enough to give me explaining how it’s good to know how to write a film if you also want to be a novelist. As I mentioned last time, I was keen to go on the course for that reason but also because one day, when I’m a grown up, I want to live in LA and write movies!
All this week I’ve been putting some of his quotes on my Facebook page – here’s one of my favourites:
"You can tell an amateur from a professional writer because an amateur keeps everything they’ve written and thinks they have to re-use it sometime, somehow!’.
Hah! So that’s where I was going wrong! Lol
Incidentally, there are some one-day courses this weekend, which look very good too, so if you’ve always wanted to write thrillers or comedies or love stories, it may help!
They’re pretty packed days – 9am till 8.30pm – but if you fancy it go to mckeestory.com to find out more. Tell Erin or Mia I sent you! (P.S. No I’m not on commission!)
