As our 20th Birthday celebrations continue, we recently caught up with Jane Cunningham who is a Beauty blogger and writer for both online and mainstream media including Metro and The Financial Times How To Spend It website.
She started Britishbeautyblogger as a place to talk about products and experiences in a way that just wasn’t possible in magazines or papers; she wanted to say if a product was rubbish and not just discretely ‘not mention it’.
She felt consumers had a right to know if they were throwing their money away and she hasn’t looked back since!
Here's Jane telling us what she loves about QVC…
What do you like most about QVC as a retailer?
Obviously the shopping from home element is key! There's nothing like having a product fully explained and reviewed with no sales pressure to make a very relaxed shopping experience. Glass of wine by my side is nice, too!
What drew you to your top pieces?
I chose those products because, in my view, they're high performers in their field – they do the job they say they will and that is a top priority for me.
What are your top tips for selecting the right beauty product?
When you're shopping for beauty, it's really important not to rush into decisions. Blogs are such a great service because the likelihood is that whatever product you're looking at will have been tried, tested and reviewed by someone else and you'll get the full low-down on whether it's right for you.
Don't make impulsive purchases when it comes to skin care – it's a big investment so do your research. The opposite is true really for make-up – there's nothing more cheering than a brand new lipstick and it's those little feel-good treats that are exactly for impulse!
What do you think are the most important beauty essentials?
A good skincare routine is vital – the care you take of your face now is what you'll wear on your face for the rest of your life.
Jane's top QVC picks
This was one of the first skin oils I ever tried and I loved it straight away. I have known Amanda for years and the product has integrity and efficacy.
Oh, this is the secret Queen of all body lotions! The AHAs make your skin SO soft. It’s genius.
There hasn’t been a Bobbi gloss I haven’t liked yet – my collection is embarrassingly big! They’re always spot on for wearability in terms of shades – enhancing rather than attention grabbing and perfect for someone like me who is a little bit lipstick shy.
I always panic a bit if I run out of this sublime cleanser. It feels amazing on the skin and has the tactile element – so soft and silky that you just want to keep on rubbing it around your face – so you get a better cleanse just because you can’t bear to wash it off!
This was the game-changer in hair conditioners – once you’ve used it, you don’t go back really because hair isn’t the same without it. There aren’t many products you can say that about.
I use the word *miracle* very sparingly, but Sarah Chapman is an alchemist with skincare. She just has the touch, understands skin, and I have yet to use a product of hers that I haven’t loved.
In a world of complex and intense fragrances, this is just a breath of fresh air. It’s simple, wearable and very feminine, but most of all, a clean scent. It doesn’t have you baffled with top, bottom and middle notes or blind you with scent-speak…it’s just a delightful, fresh scent that I love.
I love what Frontcover does – combines everything you need to create looks and then a ‘how-to’ to get the look perfectly. Their make-up is beautiful quality and I think it encourages you to step out of your comfort zone.
I’ve chosen two products from Balance Me because they are so consistently good – the cleansing balm is just a delight to use – it smells delicious and feels so nourishing, and the face cream is very good value for money in terms of how it delivers such softness and hydration.
Benefit have the magic touch in make-up. Everything they do is beautiful quality and they’ve cornered the kit market so well with comprehensive instructions on how to get the most from the products. They don’t take themselves too seriously and yet results are seriously good.
This is a permanent resident in my bathroom. The mask whisks away old skin cells – you can feel it working so be warned, it’s tingly! – but after use your skin looks so much clearer and fresher.
I’ve picked out They’re Real because I get such great reader feedback about this on my blog. It’s one of the biggest selling mascaras ever and that’s for good reason. I don’t even wear mascara but this is so on my radar because of the amazing feedback. It’s not hype in a bottle, it really delivers.
I’m so fond of Stila – they do milky lipgloss like no other brand can – but they also focus on colours that flatter. Staples like convertible dual lip and cheek are less about the big shout and more about the quiet, understated beauty that’s so covetable.
I have three of these and rather nerdily divide my polishes into Nudes (nude polish addict here), Reds and Oranges and Other colours. They’re indispensable, frankly if you are like me and have a nail polish habit!
Put simply, I don’t even consider a nail paint without Seche Vite. I get offered a lot of manis at press shows and always turn them down unless they have some Seche secreted away. I actually have a mini-bottle of Seche that I keep in my handbag for such emergencies! It’s the best quick dry top coat I’ve ever used.
I’m quite new to this product but it was an instant obsession! It’s so light and stops skin from feeling tight immediately. I’m a great believer that taking a little time to care for your body is good for the soul as well as the skin and this is the one of the loveliest ways to nurture both! I hear it’s also great for stretch marks and stretch mark prevention.
As mentioned, I’m obsessed with nude nail polish – I love the elegance and simplicity of it and if you want to ramp it up a bit do a feature nail in neon or French tips in neon. A nude and neon nail is thing of beauty. Porchester square is an architectural nude – a little bit skin, a little bit stone and it’s absolutely a classic for that very elegant and chic nail look.
