My New year’s resolution

Simon Biagi on his bikeOK first things first… I don’t make New Year's resolutions, but I had to do something!

I've never been so unfit in all my life! It was really brought home to me at the weekend when I had to get from our studio 1 (which is on the ground floor) to studio 6 (which is on the next floor) in the normal minute and a half or so.

Well, I took the stairs (as I always do because getting stuck in a lift when you are on live TV is not great!), but when I got to the studio, I heard the “Cue” from my director and was… well, short of breath!

This came as a bit of a shock to me and has galvanised me into action. I haven’t done any regular exercise since my wife was about 6 months pregnant with our daughter (who is now 19 months old!) so I got out my mountain bike and pumped the tyres up and started. The fact that it was -5 °C meant I needed the full thermal gear so I know I won’t receive any prizes for sartorial elegance!

However, that short trip reminded me why I stopped working out in the first place. Apart from being a bit busy with a new arrival, it was mainly… sore knees!

I've been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and although it doesn’t give me pain the whole time, it lets me know that it's a chronic condition, especially in the cold. I started taking Glucosamine ages ago but wondered if anyone had any good ideas/suggestions for things that may help?

I'm up for trying anything: Hot compresses, supplements, magnets, teabags in the ears or running through the morning dew naked as long as it works! (Mind you the last one might need to wait until spring!). If you've had any success with anything, post a comment as I'm sure there are lots of people who would be interested. Living on a diet of Ibuprofen is not my idea of fun.

My knees are squeaking and ache, but I will have to persevere for a while and hopefully, if I can build up the muscles, I can make it up to studio 6 without sounding like I am on 40 cigarettes a day.

Simon x

Thanks so much to all the people who have left comments ( Sylvia and Melody et al). Unfortunately since we have moved to our new personal site the comments have been lost. I am still seaching for solutions!

Hi Simon. Sorry to hear that you lost my original contribution. I said that I also have knee problems and as I am a line dance teacher my knees take a lot of wear and tear, not helped by the fact that I am 70 next month! In addition to glucosamine I take chondroitin and also calcium tablets. I swear by arnica gel, which I apply generously BEFORE going to a class (I do about 9 a week) and I get worried if I don’t have at least one bottle in reserve. It really does help. I do also wear a magnetic bracelet. Good luck with these hints. Sylvia
