My brush with Eurovision fame!

Julia sings in 1980's Song for Europe

We're rapidly approaching QVC's 16th birthday on October 1st and as some of you know, I've been here throughout all of those 16 years.

However, I did have a career in the entertainment industry pre-QVC, as I was reminded the other day. I'd presented with 'Wearable Art by Bob Mackie' show with the flamboyant Jonathan Ellis, and afterwards he told me he'd been watching me on YouTube singing with a group called 'The Main Event' on 1980's 'Song for Europe'.

As a fashionista he commented on the outfits we wore – animal print, shiny stretch trousers – well it was the early '80s, need I say more?! He particularly noticed the vibrant green outfits that myself and the other backing singer were wearing, and was quite surprised when I told him I'd made them. Or maybe he was more surprised that I'd owned up to it!! If you're dying to see the song then just click on here for a giggle!

That was 1980 and now my daughter Sophie is following in my footsteps as she's in an all-girl group. If you'd like to find out more then watch this space…

Taking of shiny and green, if you love both (but perhaps not in a jumpsuit!), then watch out for the Gem Day Today's Special Value launching on Wednesday 30th September. Dale and I will be presenting, and I can promise you, the TSV is GORGEOUS, you won't be disappointed!

Till next time,
Julia. xx.

I think this is a brilliant blog 🙂 It’s funny to see you when you were younger. The song wasn’t too bad either! Only thing I’m not sure about is the green colour ha ha
Take care. Great read again xx

Hello Julia, Just watched the youtube video of your background singing and you were amazing! And haven’t changed a bit!
You are my favorite presenter on QVC and I think we are all so lucky to have had you on our screens with QVC for the past 16 years and hopefully for at least another 16, QVC really wouldn’t be the same without you… especially when it comes to the fantastic butler and wilson shows (which always succeed to make me smile).

    Hi Julia
Just watched your video, not bad at all. Green does look good on you. I will be watching on the 30th, as I saved some money to buy a new ring, I never bought Green Gem before, so I can not wait for the TSV.
I have been shopping with QVC for 16 years now, and I Just can”t see QVC without Julia Robert, to me it is just not possible. Whenever I buy something from QVC that you presented, and I tell my husband that Julia said this about the product, he knows whom Iam talking about, and Julia to us at home is part of the family, someone we see almost everyday, and laugh with a lot.
Hope you will be there for many years to come, you know we all love you. You do a great job.

I really like you Julia, you’re an excellent presenter, always know the products and the facts you hold in your head astound me, but and watching that clip I know why I can relate to you so well- you are so down to earth and not afraid to laugh at yourself. Before you take that the wrong way-I have the most amazing pictures of myself as an 80s teenager – huge great perm and fashion sense I THINK NOT. I always laugh when I see myself…..!
Long may you reign at QVC!

    Hi Catherine
That’s very kind of you to say I haven’t changed a bit – although not totally accurate!!
Thankyou for your lovely words, it’s wonderful to feel so wanted …….. but another 16 years?? That would make me almost 70, and I don’t think all the Decleor and Elemis in the world could help defy gravity for that long!
Lots of Butler and Wilson coming up this week – I am with him Thursday at 11p.m. and Friday at 8 p.m., hope you’ll be watching?
    much love

    Hello Magda
Thankyou so much for your lovely words, and I am so happy to be part of your home. How are you doing now and are you still planning to come to the UK in December?
The TSV tomorrow night really is lovely – it’s a classic design in white gold, and a beautiful colour.
Hope you like it, you deserve a treat
    much love

    Hi Ruth
I’m so glad you said we all dressed like that in the 1980’s – don’t want any of the youngsters who stumble across it on youtube thinking it was just me!!
Thanks also for the lovely compliments, and I’ll keep on entertaining you as long as you still want me to.
    much love

    Hi Sharon,
Thanks for your compliment – you know I was terrified as it was the first ‘live’ telly I had ever done. Doesn’t bother me at all now – so the last 16 years have definitely helped me in that respect!
    keep watching

    Hi Lucia-Maria,
Thankyou thankyou for your lovely words and for inviting me into your home. Make-up and lighting can do wonderful things LOL. No special presents lined up except the treat of working with Simon Wilson on our Birthday – that’s enough for me!
    much love

    Hi Nicki
I think it’s important that we don’t take ourselves too seriously especially with fashions like that! Funny thing is, the fashionistas keep telling us jumpsuits are BACK ……… NOT for me though. Thanks for your lovely compliments, I hope you can tell I really enjoy my job?!
Incidentally, the hair wasn’t a perm – more the result of standing in front of a steaming kettle…… the things we did in the 80’s!!!!
    much love

Hi Julia great fun to watch the Eurovision video – I note that purple is your favourite colour now rather than green! Speaking of which can you tell me what kind of eye shadow that lovely purple one is which you often wear (the one you removed with the Gatineau Floracil on air!) Its a really nice shade and wondered if it was available on QVC. Thanks and keep up the good work !

    Hi Dorothy
You’re right it was a very exciting experience, and thanks for kind comments. I love looking back at old photos with the hairstyles and fashions – funny how so much of it gets revamped and becomes fashionable again. Why stop at the old school photos? – I find naked baby pictures usually have the desired effect!!!!
    much love

    Hello Morag,
Glad you enjoyed the Song for Europe video ….. we didn’t make it through to Eurovision although Cheryl Baker did the following year with her new group ‘Buck’s Fizz’! Actually I do still like green but not as eye make-up. The purple I’m using at the moment is a YSL compact – all the shades in it are lovely. I also use the Smashbox shadowliner in Spotlight, but I think we are sold out of it at the moment.
    keep watching
    love Julia xx

    Hi Julia
You look great on the video! and you look great now! I think I had the same style jumpsuit in green which I also made myself they were all the rage back then !
I loved the dress you were wearing when you did the TSV with Wayne Dyer it was purple with a frill down the front ,is it from QVC or one of your own?
    Kind Rgards

    Hi Anita
Thanks for the compliments. I wonder if we used the same pattern to make our respective jumpsuits – how funny that yours was green too!!
It was a top and skirt I was wearing for the Wayne Dyer show – I got them from Per Una ( M&S ) about 9 months ago so not sure if they will still have them, but worth a try.
    Much love

Hi Julia love all the shows you do ,you always give the sizes of clothes early on so we now what we are seeing. Loved the video, i noticed how pale your skin was,did you not like the sun back then, or was there no fake tan about. Keep up the good work.

    Hello Kathryn
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your comments re the shows I present, much appreciated!
I’ve always loved the sun, so I can only assume the contest was held in the Winter months (I’m thinking it might have been November?) so I wouldn’t have had access to any warm weather. Believe it or not the first foreign holiday that I went on as an adult (not including the exotic places I have worked in) was when the children were 6 & 7, so a good 14 years after the Song for Europe I did ……… so no winter sunshine for me.
As for fake tan, I’ve never used it – I think I would just make too much of a mess!!
    much love
    Julia x
