Mother’s Day and my birthday surprise!

49

Ali and Lucy on Mother's dayThank you soooooo much for all your lovely Mother's Day responses!

I have really enjoyed reading about the day itself, your lives, your children, and of course your mothers!

Interesting how many of us feel the same way about our daughters, and how those of us with more than one child, I wondered initially if we could ever love another child as much as our first…

Of course we all do, and even though as with my children, they are all incredibly different, I love them all equally.

Although I worked both ends of last week, I did have Wednesday off, and Sam and Jack drove down to see us, so that we could go out for supper to celebrate Sam's 24th birthday. As the actual day coincided with Mother's Day, and he was planning a 'heavy' night out on Saturday, we agreed it would be best to celebrate early, and celebrate we did!

Ali's sonsSam drove us into Windsor, and had decided on the restaurant, and so we headed off to Gourmet Burger! By jingo they certainly know how to dress up a burger! The boys and Colin had something called a Taxi Driver, which was so large I think you could probably have seated five people in it and demanded a tip!

I chose a lamb burger without the bun (I had sweet potato wedges instead) and it was delicious.

I think the boys get a little tired of me trying to make photographic memories of the rare occasions we are together, but I did manage to snap these… they were both on great form, and came back to stay the night which was lovely. As you can see by the photo though, boys will be boys!

Lucy's cardI had to head into work relatively early the next morning, but I have say it made me really happy to have them both there, even if I only had time to say goodbye to them.

I knew that I wouldn't be seeing either of them on Mother's Day as in their own words, they would be 'hanging', but Lucy was heading to us for lunch and had planned to treat me to a meal.

However when I found out how much it was to be, it was far too expensive, and so I decided to cook a roast for us instead :)

I have to be honest and say I bought everything pre-prepared, so that all I had to do was put it in the oven, and it was delicious.

Ali's Morther's Day present from LucyShe had this special card made for me which I thought was fabulous, and bought me these beautiful little coffee cups.

We have inherited a built in coffee machine, which although Jack spent some time showing me how it works, I may well need to call on Claire Sutton's Dan who is the 'Coffee King' to remind me!

I did speak to my mum who was spending her day with my sister Jenny and her two daughters Emily and Verity.

I'd bought mum a Lola Rose necklace which she loved, so a successful day all round I felt :)

Thanks to all those of you who tweeted me over the last few days about my hair! I have to thank Michael from Ojon for the fabulous cut and blow dry… I have to admit to being a little anxious about having it cut even the tiniest bit, as apart from trimming the top and my fringe, the rest hasn't been touched since it grew back. However, it looked so much better afterwards I was thrilled. Amazing too that it naturally fell into the style I used to have before I lost it all which made me a little bit teary if I'm honest :)

Perfect timing to have a bit of a tidy up though, as this morning I am being whisked off to a secret destination for two days with my man, who has arranged something special for my birthday! I have been told to pack two evening dresses, warm clothes too, walking shoes, heels, bikini, thick socks and a hat!!! I think the last three are to throw me off the scent!

I have absolutely no idea what has been planned, but I do know that my children are in cahoots, and that I will be seeing all three of them on Saturday to continue the celebrations! If you could go anywhere or do anything for your birthday, what or where would it be?

Have a think, and let me know, and we can compare notes! :)

Stay warm, and enjoy the weekend, and I'll look forward to hearing from you, with my love, Ali xxx

Hello Ali, Your extended Mother Day’s sounded perfect and your mysterious weekend should be wonderful too, I assume the last three items are not to be worn as an ensemble! We all know how much you love having your three with you and when you wrote in a previous blog that the last time was at Christmas I realised that was the last time we saw Bex and Ellie together. All those years when they were in bedrooms next door to each other and now they live at opposite ends of the M5. Your hair does look glorious and just as it was before everything happened, proof of the amazing strength of Mother Nature and how we can heal and overcome so many traumas. You asked about birthday dreams and getaways, mine’s an Autumn birthday so I’d go to see the leaves in New England, or wait for a few weeks and go to New York (I love her) for an early December Christmas shopping trip, or have it earlier, maybe in September, and travel from Venice to Sorrento and on to Taormina. Of course I’d also love to visit Sri Lanka and smell the fragrance of the flowers and herbs floating on the breeze. Time for a talk to my best travelling companion I think. Happiest of birthdays to you. Love from Jo x

And a very Happy Happy Birthday to you Ali and another perfect few days away – Cannot wait to see/hear where you have been and what you have been doing – and also how much was just to get you off the scent!!!! It is a lovely crisp cold day here and super for walking etc so hope that where ever your weekend turns out to be the weather will be the same as here. Birthdays are so special when sharing them with our loved ones. We always have a birthday celebration with all of us together but for some part of the day on my birhtday I like to have a walk in the hills. Perfect I feel. I had also noticed how very good your hair was looking and delighted to hear you are so pleased with the cut etc. How different a few months make. Yesterday my daughter had her last chemo and was more than a little delighted (as you will understand). She went for the mapping on Wednesday and it was just like you had said so thank you very much for your words and for just being there. She will start the next part in April and is quite excited as this will be the beginning of the end of rounds of treatment. Her hair is growing back and we are laughing at this new growth. She has always had long hair (down to her bottom when younger) so this will be the new look when it grows back and is short. Enjoy your weekend you special lady love Jilly xx

    Dear Ali,
So glad you enjoyed your Mother’s Day. Great also to see a picture of your lovely children. I hope Sam had an enjoyable birthday, and hope even more so that all is going well for him now. I was sorry to hear about Lucy, but I’m sure a year or so down the line she will look back and realise that it was for the best. I faced a similar situation with my son – he was in a relationship for 8 years, and when it ended it was a difficult time for all concerned and it was certainly not amicable. Having a child involved made it all the more traumatic. However, several years down the line he met a lovely lady and is very happy, and more importantly has a good relationship with his son. All we want for our children is contentment and happiness isn’t it?
How exciting to be whisked away on a surprise holiday! The mix of clothes makes me wonder if there’s a scenic walk involved and then a relaxing sauna (that’s why he’s asked you to pack a bikini), and then to top it all off a fantastic meal/dance. Hope you’ll have a great time. Sure looks as if you’ll have a birthday to remember – lovely!
If I could chose a birthday dream getaway it would be somewhere exotic like Mauritius or the Maldives – I love paradise beaches – there’s nothing more beautiful than gazing out at the aquamarine blue seas and feeling the super soft white sand under your bare feet – simply wonderful!
ENJOY YOUR EXTRA SPECIAL BIRTHDAY ALI – you truly deserve it. Will be thinking of you.
    Bye for now,
    Love from Sue Radford xx

    Hi Ali
Hope you have a lovely birthday. My treat was afternoon tea with champagne at the Daffodil in Cheltenham. Jodie and I had a wonderful time. Adam surprised me on Mother’s Day with tickets for Goodnight Mr Tom at the Everyman in Cheltenham . We went on Wednesday and it was lovely to spend the evening with him and the play was brilliant. I would love to spend a birthday in Paris . I love it there. Our trips usually seem to coincide with the final stage of the Tour de France . I wonder how that happens ?! So not having to sit on a pavement on the Champs Elysee for hours would be a bonus. Enjoy your time with your lovely family.

    Hi Ali
Glad you had a great mother’s day or two!!!Meals out on this day are always very expensive and often over-rated.Great idea to have an ‘at home’ celebration, without the disturbance of a full to overflowing restaurant.Hair has been looking amazing for several months now, especially since it is so long.Looks great ‘up’.Enjoy your treat away, wherever it may be.

Hi Ali,So pleased you had a lovely Mothers Day celebration with your brood! I love those gorgeous cups that Lucy gave you. My day was a good one. We went out for a nice lunch and my son bought me flowers and some L’occitane smellies. He knows me so well! 2 days before Mothers Day though I got an even better present when he visited with his girlfriend after spending a few days in Paris. They announced that they are getting married – woohoo!! The wedding will be next June so not too long to wait and will be in the Lake District as Emma loves it there. So now planning is starting in earnest!! We’re hoping to go and look at some venues in the next few weeks.
I’m intrigued by the list Colin gave to you as to what to take on your Birthday break mm? Wherever it is I’m sure it will be fabulous. My Birthday is an Autumn one too so my ideal Birthday break would be New York as I’ve never been. The other place I’d like it to be is Rome and especially seeing it all in the news this week is making me want to go even more. One of my dear Grandads favourite songs was “Three coins in the fountain” so I’m determined to go and do that in the Trevi fountain in his memory.
Well Alison have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to
hearing about it on your return.
    Love
    Denise xx

HI Ali, you are probably at your secret destination now as it,
‘s Saturday so I hope that you have arrived at a wonderful location…maybe Madrid, Monaco or the Maldives…but hope its not Margate! Have an amazing time.
I love the idea of a posh burger restaurant, sounds delicious and fabulous. I am glad you took the short cut way to cook a roast on mothering Sunday, I was less organised I am afraid but glad a very normal Sunday…walked mums dog Scooby with my sister and her dog Phoebe ona very cold wet and wIndy beach having safely delivered their beef casserole for Sunday lunch. Then off to Kent College for my daughters Kent cricket training at 11am. Home by 2.30pm then cooked roast pork for my lot and mother in law. However, I did get some beautiful flowers some mini bars if green and blacks chocolate and a travel coffee mug with some money inside. And..best pressie of all was my 15 year old son making his bed without asking!
Its been a productive week….jobs done that have been on the ‘to do’ list which included the annual jet washing of all outside paths, patios and decking in my garden, plus mum and dad’s and my sisters. She has a karcher pressure washer, the king of all cleaners, with more attachments than you can imagine. So last Friday in wind and rain, our day off, we jet washed mums large paved garden and drive..soaking wet but boy it looked fab. Did mine on Saturday, my decking was so slime we had a game of curling with my tubs! My paths and paving were pristine. Finally finished the trio yesterday…incredibly cold but a great job done. What a feeling of satisfaction.
Off to walk dogs now, hoping it stays dry although its very cold and windy. We didn’t get any snow on the far eastern tip of Kent last week although 50 miles inland there was snow chaos at Folkestone and Maidstone. Crazy!
Have a fabulous weekend. Mary xxx

    Hi Ali
So pleased you enjoyed Mothers Day and loads of birthday hugs for you also. As you are prepared for what life throws at you I would pack what ever you fancy and more “just in case!!!!” I had a lovely mothers day also. Both my babies popped round to see me and that in itself was worth everything. i was spoilt with beautiful smellies from my son and a lovely ceramic owl for my garden from my daughter. My grand daughter made the day with telling me she loved me. What more can anyone want? We are truly blessed with our children aren’t we? As I chat to you the snow is beginning to fall but at least I am warm and snug in the house. Take care and wherever you are have a fab time and ENJOY!!!

Hi Ali, wishing you a very happy and wonderful birthday X I am sure your mystery trip that Colin has organised will be super.
The visit from the boys looked and sounded great, I love the Gourmet Burger Kitchen we go to the one at the bottom of Richmond Hill. Mothers day sounded fab!! I bet the card was lovely and the cups look gorgeous. I don’t know if you remember our last conversation(you have so many messages to reply to) I mentioned having no children and my beautiful goddaughter. I received in the post a wonderful God mother card and a pair of Rose Gold earing, also from my two God sons a beautiful card and a Necklace and bracelet, and finally from my Fab cat Hettie (via my hubby hehehe) beautiful bunch of spring flowers :-) and the special part of the day was lunch at our home for both mums. Sorry for going on. Love Claire xxxx

    Hi Ali
Happy happy birthday and enjoy your secret special time away that Colin has organised, he really is good with arranging special times for you both. Smashing pic of the boys, I bet that 24 years has just flown, they really are two great young men now.
My birthday is in August, and this year I will be 74 years young, it’s been such a busy year so far and we still have three weddings to go to, plus the horse trials at Badminton and Burghley, but I’m sure Harold and I will go for a “special meal ” somewhere nice. You haven’t said if you and Colin have planned any holidays, I’m sure you will find somewhere where you can have plenty of R & R. Can’t wait for you next blog. Much Love Norma x

Dear Ali, sorry I haven’t replied to your last 2 blogs but I have been rather preoccupied with Alfie my beautiful bundle of gorgeousness!! We are all really worried for him at the moment there are problems with his eyes so he has to go under a general anesthetic when he is 8 weeks old for an exploratory operation to find out whats going on with his eyes and they are not sure if it is a symptom of another problem. So I will pray after all the tests he is having all will be well. I have to say he has stolen my heart and it is a 2 hour round trip to see him but boy is it worth it. I’d move in if I could lol !!.
Happy belated birthday I am sure Colin took you somewhere fabulous and I hope you had a lovely time. Your hair is looking lovely are you going to grow it longer? I did just because I could after being bald!!
Love the picture of Sam and Jack and you with Lucy glad you had a nice mothers day as I did, first one with son and grandson best ever present. I hope all is improving with Sam as he has had a rough time of it but he has your support Ali and that will mean a heck of a lot to him.
We are thinking of going to Kefalonia for summer and I know you have been any recommendations gratefully received.
If I could go anywhere for my birthday it would be anywhere in the Lake District it is a piece of Heaven on earth.

So glad that you enjoyed the blog and I hope that it won’t be too much longer before you see Bex and Ellie together :) I love your suggestions for birthday destinations, and clearly we are similar women. I too have never been to Sri Lanka but would love to smell the jasmine and herbs on the warm breezes… :) I had a wonderful birthday, but as I am heading off to Morrocco on Thursday I will be writing all about it from there! Just desperately trying to wash/iron/pack before work tomorrow and then a 4am arrival at Gatwick!!! take care love Ali xx

Dear Jilly, I am so glad to hear that your daughter sailed through her mapping appointment and that my experience helped her with what to expect. Fabulous that her hair is already growing back, and I’m sure she will look lovely with a short crop :) I think a walk in the hills would be perfect for a birthday treat…. preferably on a dry and sunny day, but the fresh air is always welcome eh? If you’ve read my previous comment, I am infact heading off to Morrocco with Colin (spring sunshine) and so will write to you from there and let you know where I was last weekend, and the fun I had – we had a ball! You take care and as always, my very best to your daughter. Love Ali xx

Dear Sue, I can so empathise with you and your son’s situation… so very difficult for all involved, but I am very happy to read that he is now happy and has found someone who is good to your grandson too.. there truly is someone for everyone… sometimes it just takes us a while to find them. My weekend away was such fun, and now Colin and are heading off for another break in Morrocco. I feel very spoiled, but in need of a little R & R and am just praying that the rather heavy cold I feel descending on me will disappear overnight, and I’ll be fit and well for my 6.30am flight!! I think your idea of a dream getaway is very much mine! Mauritius or the Maldives… my sister went to the latter and the photographs she took where breathtaking.. paradise indeed. Thinking of you too Sue, and will write whilst I am away, love Ali xx

I remember reading Goodnight Mr. Tom when it was a school book for Sam, and then cried my way through the film on TV… must have been even more moving as a stage play! I think you should definitely revisit Paris when the Tour de France is NOT on! It is the most beautiful city when devoid of lycra clad peddaling competitors… see if you can cajole him :) Take care, and enjoy the rest of the week, love Ali xxx

I am certain you would love New York in the autumn. I visited in October both times – first with QVC and then the second with my daughter Lucy for her 21st birthday :) And Rome… what can I say, except GO! The Trevi fountain is as beautiful as you can imagine it would be. Thanks so much for writing, and I will be blogging again while I take a week off… need a little R & R after my hectic weekend – all will be revealed! Love Ali xx

Look forward to hearing all about it. I’ve just been looking for a holiday to Tenerife, so hope to go in a couple of weeks time. The weather is driving me mad too lol!!

It was lovely to hear all about your Mother’s Day treats, although just reading about your life leaves me worn out! I don’t know how you keep up with your life Mary but it sounds great and you always make me smile – I don’t think my sons even knew how to make a bed when they were 15 years old! :). Back from Morrocco where we had a wonderful sunny break and left the worst of the weather behind! Dear Janet, I am so sorry to hear about baby Alfie and the problems he has been going through with his eyes. I hope that by now you will be a little closer to know what is causing it, and am praying it will be simple to rectify. He sounds delicious, and I am sure it must be very touching to see your son as a Dad… such a strange thing to consider for me :) Yes Colin did take me somewhere fabulous for my birthday, and I promise that now I’m back from Morocco I will write and fill you in on all the details – it was great fun! I am so glad that you have chosen Kefalonia as your summer destination and my main recommendation to you would be to hire a car, as the middle of the island is often cloudy and rainy but the coastline lovely and sunny. So much beauty in the island that you will miss if you rely just on excursions.. a lot cheaper too if you make your own way there :) I agree with you about the Lake District too – I had a wonderful holiday there with my godmother many moons ago.. great memories. Take care and do let me know how Alfie is, love ali xx

Hi there Patricia, it makes me so pleased for you, and hopeful for myself when i read that you a well having struggled through both skin and breast cancer. Congratulations too on your birthday and wedding anniversary! 46 years, how wonderful :) Funny that we were both in Australia this time last year and I hope that whichever part of the country you visited it was sunnier than Sydney! That said we had a wonderful time as you may remember me writing about. May God bless you too and keep you safe and thank you for writing to me, love Ali xxx

Hi Sue, just back from Morocco and I have to say it was possibly THE most relaxed holiday we ever had! Although we had a day of rain, and often cloud and wind, there was still plenty of sunshine and looking at the forecast in England we picked our time well! :). We were so lazy we didn’t get out to visit anywhere apart from Agadir Marina and the beach but we would definitey like to return. I do hope that you have managed to book your holiday to Tenerife – Colin and I had our first holiday together there, and it was brilliant :) will be blogging after Easter with my birthday excitement but no wifi reliable enough to send photos or any large documents through in Morocco. Happy Easter to you and yours, love Ali xx

Susan I think the hotel was possibly the best we’ve stayed in on a short haul holiday, and yet not the most expensive! We had one day of rain and some pretty windy days but plenty of sunshine to warm the bones and the spirit :) I am glad you liked the blog and photos… No chance to send to all thru while away, so will have it for you as soon as the Easter Break is over. Love to you and thanks for writing, love Ali xx

Susan, I think it was possibly the nicest hotel we have stayed in on a short haul flight, and by no means the most expensive! We had one day of rain but apart from strong wind and a little cloud, it was lovely. Sooo much better than here by the look of the news! I had planned to write about my birthday while I was away, but not a good enough connection and couldn’t send the photos so watch this space!!! Love to you, Ali xx

Oh and Susan, the teal dress that Kathy T was wearing was a previous TSV from Tiana B…. I thought she looked gorgeous too – hope you’re enjoying her new show every Wednesday at 10am? Oh and the fuschia top I wore was from a range called Join Clothes – very wearable, and great cos just one size! I will see if I can get one to wear regularly :) Take care and Happy Easter to you and yours, love me xx

Martin, thanks as always for writing, and I’m glad that you are well. Colin and I had a truly relaxing time in Morocco, and felt very lucky to have missed the dreadful weather here! I am glad that you are enjoying Julia’s book – do blog and let her know, as I know it’s been very much a labour of love for her, and an incredible achievement to write so much! :) Take care, love Ali xx

Hi Susan, we had a wonderful time in Morocco. Friends had recommended a hotel and it definitely exceeded our expectations. We had at least five days of sunshine and although it was pretty breezy, it was incredibly relaxing. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants some true R and R! I’ll be writing after Easter with a somewhat belated birthday blog, and then will post up our pictures of Morocco. Happy Easter to you! love Ali xx
