- First signs of autumn, during another heatwave!
- Win a copy of my 2002 semi-autobiographical weight loss book
- RiWiSi focusses on raunchy novels from the UK’s new Queen of Steam
- And Rafe Spall and Stephen Merchant shine in ‘I Give it a Year’
Oh gosh it’s that time of year again, I’ve spotted the first red, yellow and green leaves from the trees in the field behind me (in the photo above). Yet it’s hot! How is it suddenly September again? How? How?
Of course a lot of the mums are pleased – it means you get your daytimes back as the kids return to school! And for me, it means thinking about my daughter Lauren’s birthday. And also where to go on my upcoming week off.
Let’s hope the weather stays like this – it’s supposed to!
I need to focus now, cos I’m getting behind – there are actually some hypnotherapy sessions during my stay at the spa, so I might go ask them to help me with ‘writer’s block’ – altho’ it’s less ‘block’ with me – and more ‘writer’s-being-distracted-by-social-media-and-blog-writing’…!
Anyway after that it’s back to Devon to pal Alix’s – so guaranteed it’ll rain that week knowing my luck! I just have to finish my prequel to 'Hawaiian Affair'.
The first chapter freebie is now over, and it went very well I’m glad to say! If you didn’t know, I also did a weight loss book – see below for comp!)
But tell me – what does this time of year mean to you? Do you hate it? Love it? Leave me a comment below!
JEWELLERY MONTH CONTINUES –
But I have to say I really enjoyed my Museum Of London show on Tuesday night – well, with what was left of the stock after Catherine’s lunchtime show!
Hazel, curator of the new exhibition also has a book coming to QVC in October about it all, so look out for it!
And for more from Carol Woolton, Jewellery Editor of British Vogue (see her video about the range on my blog last week!)
Loved this hour! Loads sold out or went limited but if you missed it, do LINK search our website for Museum of London to see what’s left. And watch out on around 22nd October for its return, featuring some of these new pieces…
Still to come…. A funny blooper from guest Jodie during Artscapes show… ivy run riot… and a facebook philosophy from Antthony…
This week, more kindle-fodder for you, a focus on steamy, and a book of the week to lift your spirits!
Win a copy of ‘Till the Fat Lady Slims’!
When I was at my heaviest, and desperate for a solution, I met two ladies who were on QVC with ‘Freedom Eating – the 7 secrets of slim people’ – remember them? Well to say it changed my life is an understatement.
They asked me to write my story and this is the result! It’s got a lot about me and my own journey through the dieting minefield, bits about when I was at QVC first time round too (1994-2000) and some useful tips which I’ve adopted and never binged again.
If you’d like to get it anyway it’s £2.02 on ebook and £5.43 on paperback (correct at time of writing – Amazon sometimes change the paperback prices willy-nilly!) click here for more info.
Otherwise just leave a comment below saying you’d like to be entered in the random draw to pick the winner – results next week! (deadline midday thurday 12th). Good luck! Full T&C's here.
Focus on Steamy
Author of ‘Knight and Play’ and ‘Knight and Stay’, USA Today top author, a former fellow student of Julie Cohen’s writing courses, and all round nice person, Kitty French talks about her own success – and it’s a massive success! – since she self-published her own first erotic novels on Amazon. Go here to see her titles online.
But first, here are some tips from the UK’s Queen of Steam…
“I usually write romantic comedy, so with the advent of Fifty Shades and the associated explosion of the erotic romance market it wasn't a huge leap to have a go at writing something more explicit.
My books are still romance at heart, just with added oomph – I think of it as complete escapism reading.
A hot leading man is an absolute must for this genre, as is a heroine that doesn't irritate the heck out of everyone!
The one question I get asked the most is where do I get my inspiration from, and the answer is lots of places. I read a huge number of books, and film and TV are great sources of inspiration.
For the 'Knight' series I wanted to write a hero who had some of Christian Grey's alpha qualities, but who was all about pleasure rather than pain. I also wanted to set it somewhere unusual, somewhere icy cold where you could see the aurora borealis.
Putting all of this together led me to create Lucien Knight, originally from Norway but now a successful London based club owner. This gave me the scope to set the book between the UK & Norway, which was a real treat to research, and Lucien was great to write, full of wit and one liners but with lots of hidden depths!
Any fans of the True Blood TV series will not be surprised to hear that Alexander Skarsgard would be my dream casting for Lucien. A girl's gotta dream, right?
I decided to self publish the Knight series for speed reasons – if there's one thing I've learned about the traditional publishing industry it's that everything takes an absolute age, and I wanted the Knight series to catch the crest of the erotic wave. It turned out to be the best decision I've ever made.”
Added info about self-publishing steamy novels and links to her books, all on on my website’s RiWiSi Go Large page!

Book of the Week – Pam Grout’s ‘E2'
Part of the Louise Hay stable, ‘E2, Your Thoughts Create Your Reality’ caught my eye this week doing the rounds on Facebook. It’s currently only £1.49 on Kindle, and has been making waves on Amazon and elsewhere online.
With some fab testimonials, as to how it’s making a difference to what happens in some people’s lives, if you’re down in the dumps at the moment, it might be worth getting.
Could it be you too? It’s all about going far beyond The Secret and the power of positive thinking, and has some specific exercises to do to as well. Give it a go, or gift it.
You can find out more about Pam Grout’s E2 here. And if you’ve got a self-help book that you’d like to recommend, do let me know by leaving a comment below!

It’s a cracker this week – from the artscapes show on Saturday night – a cute slip of the tongue by guest Jodie! Hehe!

- Brad had his stag night (well the ‘northern family’ one!) this week, and my son and his uncles and cousins had a right laugh as you can see in this pic! Time is drawing near – his wedding is less than a month away now! Eeek!
In 1986 I planted a single normal sized Ivy plant from the garden centre, which had been a gift from Terry the Lodger in my house in Wincham, Cheshire when I worked at Screensport.
Now look at it! OMG – totally taken over the garage! Funny! Have you got any examples of plants which have turned triffid? Let me know by leaving a comment below!
WATCH – DVD REVIEW – ‘I GIVE IT A YEAR’
When you watch ‘I Give it a Year’ you begin to see just how much of 'The Office' was Stephen Merchant and not Ricky Gervais. So if you didn’t like that, you won’t like this. I did, so I do.
Rafe Spall (son of Timothy) – Life of Pi, Hot Fuzz, Prometheus, Anonymous, One Day – has become one of my fave Brits to watch out for in movies, and he didn’t let me down in this one. Just a little on the cringey side of loved up, but nonetheless a strong compelling performance as the groom in the one-sided marriage which is the focus of the film’s title.
It’s packed full of one liners – like when talking about writing wills & life support: "We just switched off my aunt, lounge looks much better and we freed up the socket for a lava lamp." - and others.
At times it is a bit too laugh-a-minute, in a bad way - I wasn’t a fan of the hackneyed ‘coarse best man’s speech’ routine. But overall quite entertaining – if you aren’t expecting anything too deep.
It actually gets a higher score as it really did make me laugh out loud on several occasions – so it’s obviously my cup of tea, this type of humour! Well, some of it. But I’ve seen Stephen Merchant be much better – e.g. in the film 'Tooth Fairy'. So overall, I give it 7.75 out of ten (it loses a mark for the clichés!)
