Behind the scenes with our QVC Promotions Team

PromoThere's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes here at QVC to produce the shows that you love!

We caught up with Jason, our Promotions Supervisor, to find out a little bit more about his job at QVC…

'I am the Promotions Supervisor but I also produce and direct promo campaigns for QVC. It's a really busy job as I not only look after the day to day workloads of the team (we have 9 producers) but I manage my own projects as well.

There are the weekly meetings where we decide what is to be made as well as daily approvals of content for not only on air but on the web too; it's a busy office where no two days are ever the same.

From shooting on location, to editing in the suites, to directing voice over talent to catching up with the team – it can sometimes feel a bit like a juggling act – but the end results are usually really rewarding as the job is so creative.

Ideas are everywhere. From ads I may see on TV and magazines to music videos and online campaigns. We are often guided by the brand we're promoting (Liz Earle, for example, had to be filmed with Liz herself on the Isle of Wight) or the brief that comes from the buyers for a particular event (Meet the Experts for Beauty Day, for example).

We spend time with each other coming up with ideas or brainstorming in a bi-monthly creative meeting. The next idea for a promo can come at any time – listening to music, watching a film or having a drink with the team – sometimes they're the best ones!

I have worked at QVC for many years and produced so many campaigns that have taken me literally all over the world.

There are almost too many interesting anecdotes to choose from as every shoot will throw up something unusual or memorable.

Filming a promo for Britain's Next Top Model was really interesting as I was being filmed for the TV programme on Sky Living – so I was directing the wannabe models but being filmed myself. Really good fun and I'm particularly proud that I chose Abigail Clancy as my star model that day – and look at the career she has gone on to have!

I am most proud of the promos I shoot when on location abroad – purely because there is such pressure to come back with the goods, and time is always against you when are you are working away. Filming Jill Franks in New York was great fun – especially when she got to interview Sarah Jessica Parker – and filming on the manic streets of New York requires a cool head as it can get really intense.

The promo I filmed for L'Occitane with my colleague Anna still looks lovely on air and I am still really pleased with it when I see it go out. As I've said, I've been lucky enough to film all over the world. So many beautiful, interesting places that I would not normally have visited. The icebergs in Iceland were awseome and filming in a souk in Marrakech was probably the maddest place I've ever filmed!

We're lucky to come into contact with celebrities – but the best surely had to be backstage at the Liverpool Echo Arena with Dolly Parton. She was amazing – we were all just a little star struck but she absolutely charming.

It would be nice to feature normal size lady models on shoots or even in the studio, not always young, pretty, very tall, slim models between ages 20 to 35, but normal shaped ladies between 35 and 60 like most British women are. Also for makeup shoots and demonstrations in the studio. I am sure more mature ladies would appreciate this, I certainly would being one myself. After all time stops for no Lady as the old saying goes. Thank you, Linda Limare, QVC customer for 20 years.

I’d quite like to see the qvc dancers again, the ones in the x-mas promo a couple of years ago, they were all really good and it was all catchy and cheery – and that’s from me, I don’t even celebrate x-mas!
I also liked the spectacle of the Butler and Wilson 40th anniversary catwalk show that you sometimes get a glimpse of in the promo for that. Now that’s one video I’d love to see the whole of.

What is the lovely music that is used at moment for dennis basso promo – a man sings ‘looking for an Angel’ I love it.
