Being a model again, posh Afternoon Tea and beer celebrations

4

Have you ever done a catwalk show? I have but it was more than 20 years ago, when I used to be a Plus Size model.

Well, last Saturday afternoon I was asked to join a charity show in aid of Macmillan Cancer, all backed by the Jacques Vert group. It was a bit of a celeb fest too, with Alex Jones from The One Show, Arlene Phillips (who you’ll remember from her days on Strictly Come Dancing and much more), actress Emilia Fox and incredible British track & field athlete Perry Shakes-Drayton, to name a few. But it wasn’t all about stars and models – the show featured an array of wonderful women who’d been fighting cancer and also some Macmillan staff and nurses. Here are some photos and the video – I appear at about a minute in!

There’s something so decadent about sitting down to a posh afternoon tea, but when it’s one of the most famous foodie establishments in London it feels even more so. My university pal, Mel, got in touch a few weeks ago to remind me that 25 years ago in September, she and I started our Honours degree in Business Studies at Leicester Polytechnic (which a few years later became De Montfort University).

So to celebrate and commiserate we spent three hours at Fortnum and Mason. It cost a pretty penny but with a choice of over 80 teas, too much food for one individual, exquisite customer service and an endless supply of lilting music coming from the pianists it was an unforgettable experience. Go and try it one day if you can!

Speaking of celebrations, you remember I’m a bit of a beer fanatic? Well I got invited to the annual British Beer and Pub Association’s dinner. Thirty beers, a delicious four-course meal and 450 people (who love the industry as much as I do), gathering to mark something special.

It’s the second year that the chancellor George Osborne cut the beer tax which’d been stifling the thriving beer and pub industry. And since then over 16,700 more jobs have been created in the industry!! There’s some impressive statistics!

Sandi Toksvig was our host, and she was ultra-funny. I’ve never really paid much attention to her in the decades she’s been on our screens, but she was hilarious chatting about her Danish heritage and cracking some fantastic jokes. I’d love to see more of her live, instead of just on the TV.

    Hi Marv,
Well done on reaching and now passing your 1st Year with QVC – wow, doesn’t the time fly? Glad you’re on board and I’ll try and catch some of your shows over the next few days.
I shouldn’t be surprised that you used to be a model as I’ve commented before on your lovely skin and as said before, the photo of you with Austen on your hols, you look great. I did watch the video and did catch sight of you! It looked a great event and the photos you took are great.
Speaking of which, I LOVE the food and drink photos of your Afternoon Tea -it sounds and looks fabulous. I’ve only had 2 proper Afternoon Teas and both of them in the last 18 months and they’ve been great but to have one at Fortnum & Mason, that’s definitely one to aspire to. Glad you enjoyed it :)
It sounds like the Dinner was a great night. I like the look of the dessert – you’ve probably worked out by now that I am a ‘foodie’!!
You take care and have a great week,
    Beth XX.

Hello Beth – it was sooooooooooo long ago and I wasn’t that good as a model – hence I didn’t continue. But I used to do the fashion shows at the Spring Fair events at the NEC. Oh yes Fortnum is very foodie – was so posh it was unreal. The whole place is incredible: I went downstairs to buy a card and all the male staff were dressed like the footmen in Downton Abbey!
