PianoHello!

Hope you're having a great week!

Last week's 'just for fun' guess the picture was a keyboard! Did you get it?

Seeing it reminds me of my childhood. I had the most wonderful piano teacher who I would visit everyday after school. Mary soon became a dear friend of the family and was like a grandmother to me. We used to sit, side by side, playing the piano together and then stop for some milk and biscuits before we started playing again.

I also popped round to see Mary every Saturday lunchtime too. We kept the piano lid firmly shut on a Saturday as we settled down to watch the wrestling on BBC1! It was fabulous and we would both be yelling and shouting at the TV. That was back in the day when we only had 3 channels to choose from… Times have changed!

Mary always said to me that she would be leaving her piano to me one day. I was only 7 years old and didn't give it much thought at the time. I loved the piano but it was no ordinary piano. It was, in fact, a pianola. Carefully tucked away in boxes were dozens of rolls of music. Every now and then Mary allowed me to play the pianola for a treat. My favourite tune was The Entertainer. I remember the urge of wanting to get up and dance around – but that was impossible as my feet were needed to power the pedals to play the music!

The pianola now sits with pride in my dining room. Mary passed away when I was 13 years old. I remember feeling so numb at the time and so very, very sad for what seemed a very long time.

Mary was a magical part of my growing up and I often look back and recall the most amazing times we had together. Walks in the park, day trips to the seaside and, of course, shouting our frustration at the TV on a Saturday afternoon!

I love my pianola and so does my daughter who plays it beautifully.

I have all the rolls of music, including The Entertainer, which I have since learnt to play by myself.

March Jewellery IconBefore I lift the lid today, to play some tunes, I'd very much like to thank you for the wonderful feedback I've received on my heart pendant I've designed. The comments on Twitter have been lovely and many, many orders have been placed. It hasn't even been on air yet! However, it will be on air this coming Tuesday 11th March at 7pm when Destination Gems returns! I'm so excited… If a little nervous too!

My sister has ordered the heart, so has Alison Keenan and I've also bought the yellow option for my daughter for when she's grown up!

If you missed my blog last week, here's the video presentation we put together and you can order it here too before it goes on air on Tuesday!

Guess the picInfact, I have lots of jewellery shows on the way, including Lola Rose on Wednesday 12th at 6pm followed by Bibi Bijoux at 8.

Thanks to everyone who follows me on Twitter. It's a great way to get in touch and I've really enjoyed meeting your pets with your picture tweets you've been sending me. It would be great to meet you. I'm @mecharliebrook.

See you Tuesday 11th at 7 for Destination Gems. In the meantime here's this week's guess the picture!

Take care and in the meantime… The Entertainer…

    Hi Charlie.
Glad you got the photo’s O.K. She does have a way of putting a smile on your face. She’s off to the vets on Friday [ just to have her booster and a check up], also to say good bye to her vet as she’s leaving. Oh wouldn’t it be lovely to take the silver pendant to Australia, but unfortunately I’m not going back this year. Mum’s place is in need of some maintenance and some tender care,[ it’s been a little neglected] so I’ll be doing that. We’ve ordered the rose gold pendant for mum for her Birthday in November [ I know it’s early but I don’t think it will be around then]. My pendant has already been sent, so Hopefully I’ll have by destination gems is on.
Bella say’s a big whoof to you and the girls. Take care. Love Debby

    Hi Charlie,
I loved reading your blog – Mary sounds like she was a lovely person and you two obviously had a very special bond. How wonderful that your daughter can now play on the piano.
Your words about Mary reminded me that some of the most important people in my life have not been relatives. My relatives are brill I must quickly say(!) but I had two “Aunties” who were not relatives – Auntie Barbara (my Mum’s best friend) who was always on my side and was like a second mum to me. The other was Auntie Chris – the best friend of my GrandMum, she was lovely, very petite and had white hair tied in a bun! She had lots of lavender planted on each side of their garden path – in our current house and my previous one, I have planted lavender at the front so that people get that lovely waft of scent as they walk past. That’s the idea anyway!
Thanks for your lovely memories Charlie, very enjoyable to read and I love your presenting style – very knowledgeable and cheeky at the same time! :)

Hello Debby and a big whoof to Bella!!
I do hope your Mum loves the pendant, thank you for ordering the design. The feedback has been so kind.
I wish you luck decorating the house. Ours needs some TLC… I’m looking at the brush and roller with much reluctance!
    Take care
    Charlie

    Hello Beth,
Thank you for your lovely reply. We’ve just planted some lavender too. Isn’t it amazing how fragrance can evoke memories. When ever I smell freshly cut grass it whisks me back to my child hood!
Take care and thank you again x
    Charlie
