Making hay while the sun shines!

I wanted to start this blog by apologising to all those of you who’ve taken the time to post such lovely comments but have had to wait such an age for me to respond! I’ve been having some kind of issue that will require me to apparently ‘clear my cache’ before it can be resolved! I don’t believe it has anything to do with spring-cleaning, but I will need to be talked through the process by my lovely copywriter Lauren, and then all should be well! I do want to assure you that although my responses appear to have been written by the ‘QVC Copywriters’ they are my own words that I tried so many times to post, but that disappeared into the ether.

We celebrated the last of the family birthdays for May the day before I posted my previous blog, and as Colin turned 56 years old, his children and mine all met with him in the local pub, and treated him to a few beers. There are just a few months in the year when Colin is actually three years younger than me, but I’ll settle for him as my toy boy with just two years, any day of the week. 🙂

Talking of feeling younger I hope if you bought Judith William’s TSV you’ll have been enjoying the anti ageing benefits? I was so impressed to know that she had reached the semi-finals in the German version of Strictly Come Dancing ‘Let’s Dance’. She had to wear flat shoes during her shows here in the UK, as her feet were so blistered and sore and she’d actually broken a toe, which makes it even more remarkable that she came second in the final with her partner Erich Klann. Go Judith! Soooo pleased for her, and so glad that she got to realise her dream and dance her way through the series.

Years ago, ‘Strictly’ was top of my bucket list, but I think with my creaking joints, swollen limbs, osteoporosis and arthritis – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg – I wouldn’t stand a cat’s chance in hell of making it through even the first show. But I LOVE dancing, and was up there with the best of them last Saturday night, when we had a BBQ for the family and introduced Clare and Cale to them. It was a cracking night, and Roz and Chris came up to join us too, and without their help, I think Colin and I would have spent the entire day on Sunday clearing away!

That said, it was well worth it, and we hope to manage another ‘family day’ before the end of the summer. Only two of the children stayed over this time, but I’m seriously thinking of investing in an Aerobed TSV on Wednesday (item no: 805209). It’s the raised one that is just like sleeping on a divan with a sprung mattress! It’s available in 3 Easy Payments too, so if you fancy giving it a go, make sure you don’t miss it.

And what a summer it’s turning out to be!

I was heading home from work one evening and just had to stop outside Windsor Racecourse to take this photograph through the gates there – just magical! It was another sunny day when I visited mum and Joe, and it was wonderful to see him looking so much better, and to know that for mum, the worry is over. Thank you for your kind words and wishes – I did pass them on. As you know, I love the warmth and the sunshine at this time of the year, and was lucky enough to spend a very special afternoon with Lucy and Honey visiting two of the parks that are local to her and enjoying a cheeky Peppa Pig ice cream too! The perfect way to share summer.

We did a fair bit of walking that day, but as I was wearing my Skechers my feet were unscathed. We’ve got some special Skechers shows lined up to celebrate their eighth anniversary, and I’ve just invested in two pairs of the Clarks Annadel Bari Wedge – one in neutral and a second pair in coral (item no 171837). Can’t wait to team them up with my maxi dresses :).

I’m keeping my tan in place with Decleor’s Gradual Glow and also Tan Luxe’s Sleep Oil (which adds colour to your face while you sleep!). I use Ultrasun’s Tinted Face Factor 30 so need a bit of a boost to keep up with the rest of me. Abi Cleve is bringing us another TSV from Ultrasun on the 4th July – she’s included the Sports Spray, the 50 plus, and the Aftersun Tan Booster with two Ultralips, and I know there’s a massive saving to be made if you buy on the day, and then keep up with the Auto Delivery.

Before I go, I just wanted to bring you up to date with some news about the book I wrote just over a year ago. I know that you’ve been asking after it, and I had SO hoped to bring you positive news, but after holding onto it for 18 months, the mainstream publisher who had planned to have it on the bookshelves by the autumn this year, has decided to put it on hold. To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement, but I know from both Julia Roberts and Debbie Flint that self-publishing is a very effective way to bring a book to life, and so that may well be what I will do. I’d love to have it in print by the end of the year, but I promise I’ll keep you in touch with my progress. Thank you so much for your interest :).

I’ve got a line full of wet washing to hang, and a lawn to mow, so I’d better head off. It takes a fair bit of time to keep the garden in order, but I’m very chuffed with my pots again this year, although I wish I’d put a net on the strawberries that Honey and I nurtured. Not sure if it’s squirrels or birds, but they have pinched the lot! How do you keep your fruit and veg safe from predators? I don’t have enough room for a scarecrow, and we don’t have milk bottle tops any more, otherwise I’d have strung them together. Any suggestions, I’d love to hear from you.

Take care and enjoy the lovely warm weather we’ve been promised, oh and do keep in touch. Either here, on Twitter @alikqvc or my Facebook page Alison Keenan.

With my love,

Ali xx

Thanks Loraine, very nice of you to say:) So glad you got your mention last week and knew that I showed the photo of you all in Florida. It was SO nice to be able to put a face to the name after all this time. Many thanks for your anniversary wishes, which I send onto you and Les, and who knows, it would be a miracle, but maybe Colin and I could make 40 years! The diamond solitaire sounds stunning, and I think it’s lovely you’re keeping them safe until his birthday. I’m sure the family will make it a truly memorable occasion and I look forward to hearing all about it. Yes, very frustrating about the book and I have to keep believing in it sufficiently to publish it myself… But thank you for your kind words and promise to read it. You take care, and keep in touch, love Ali xxxx

Good evening Alison, the sun is shining finally in Westgate after a miserable couple of days..yesterday we were at cricket and I was wrapped up with Olly in my leopard print slanket…it’s permanently in the car!
As usual your blog was full of wonderful stories and pictures, the garden is looking lovely and your comment about having to hang out wet washing and now the lawn sounds just like me! I went to the Kent Garden Show a few weeks ago at the county snowbound, it was fabulous. I was limited to what I could buy as I only have two arms…however I managed to buy two beautiful tall metal flower sculptures and some Lily and alium bulbs..the lilies are looking fabulous and should flower in a couple of weeks. There was so many beautiful plants and ornaments..thoroughly recommend a visit if there is one near you.
Chloe didn’t get her job…it appears the his was given to someone in the adjoining nursery and Chloe was just a tick box exercise to show the school had advertised externally. She was quite cross but has moved on and done some more applications. I really hope she finds something before September when most of her friends are off to Uni and she will be feeling a bit lonely. Olly the dog is 2 today…he’s had a busy day and is currently curled up next to me snoring!
Enjoy the sunshine..Oh and great news that Joe is feeling better..I hope he continues to improve. Much love Mary

My dear Mary I’m so sorry it’s taken me so long to reply to you, and by now you’ve probably had a week of fabulous weather! The Kent Garden Show sounds fantastic, and I’m liking the sound of your flower sculptures. My calla lilies have just bloomed again – only three flowers this year, so I think I need to separate them into two pots!

    • Alison Keenan June 26, 2018 at 9:25 pm -  Reply

Sorry Mary… I just wanted to make sure my comments are posting, as they don’t appear on here any more once I’ve typed them, so fingers crossed! I was sorry to hear about Chloe, but glad that this setback hasn’t put her off applying for more work. I do hope she finds something soon, and I am certain her determination will pay off. Belated happy birthday to Olly and I hope you’re enjoying the sunshine too – how lovely to be by the sea 🙂 Love Ali xx

Morning Ali, This is a super time of the year & we are having lots of lovely early summer days, much deserved after that miserable winter. What makes it even more special for me is that with the exception of the half term holiday at the end of May this is a time of the year I used to see though the windows of a classroom. It is a joy to have the time to eat breakfast at a leisurely pace while sitting in the garden & listening to the birds. I am always aware that Sox may appear & attempt to pounce but fortunately he’s a gentle soul & I think the attempted pounce is more to save face in case any other mogs are watching him. Sunny days also make it easy to do the spontaneous things like your trips to the parks with Honey; we went to the Three Counties Show on Saturday with Tallulah & Max & it took me back to all the shows we went to when the girls were little, though I don’t remember them being as hard on the feet as this one was. I think that Judith Williams has the glamorous style of a 1940s film star & she looks fabulous in the photos from the show. I am sure you would have been a star on Strictly & we all know you like a boogie, I can remember you writing about a Q Christmas party where you were dancing all night & one of the musicians asked you to leave his bongos alone… I am pleased that your mum’s man is making a good recovery, it must have been a worrying experience for both of them, our son in law has just found out that his father has got the disease in his tongue so his journey for the next year sounds difficult to say the least. I am about to be deserted for Mont Blanc but as Colin’s birthday is the first event in three months of big celebrations (all ending with 0) I will spend the time he’s away doing my planning, I could even design a mountaineering themed cake! Love from Jo x

Dear Jo, so lovely to hear how you are enjoying your retirement, I’m very well deserved indeed. My sister is coming to stay with me tomorrow, and she like you spends most of her summer period the sunshine through the classroom windows. You are right about the spontaneity to, so good to be able to make the best of the weather and get out and about. Lucy, honey and I really enjoyed last Friday, and I’m glad to know you visited the three counties show. I’m sure there’ll be other opportunities for you to gad about this summer! Good luck to your Colin on his climb, and I think a mountaineering cake would be a cracking idea! Check out Pinterest – they have some fab ideas on there. Thanks for always taking the time out to write to me, and as with Mary, I can only apologise for being so late in responding, but the system still is not playing ball. Take care and keep in touch, love Ali xx

Love your garden Alison! Honey is such a cutie pie, love seeing her photos. She looks such a gorgeous happy little soul. Enjoy the warm days down South. Not quite so warm up here in the Borders, but off to Spain for a Mum and daughter holiday in 4 weeks. Cant wait to get some sun. Always watch your Diamonique shows. Far too tempting, but nice to treat myself sometimes, Take care xx

I bet you have a wonderful time away in Spain with your daughter, so do let me know how you get on. I hope you enjoy tonight’s Diamonique show, and thanks for your kind words, love Ali xx

Hi Ali, great blog as usual. Your family get together sounded wonderful. It is a lot of work but so worth it to see everyone enjoying themselves!
I wonder if you read my comment on your last blog about our Charlie asking me to grow a baby sister for him? He’s so adorable and very amusing with what he comes out with. He has to have his tonsils out in the next few weeks. Apparently they are very enlarged and that is why he has had a lot of bouts of sickness. His mummy is dreading it but she will be able to stay with him so that’s good. I remember having my tonsils out when I was 5 years old (61years ago) wow!! I was taken in on a Sunday afternoon and didn’t see mum and dad again until the Tuesday when they fetched me home! Thank goodness times have changed and little ones aren’t left alone anymore!
Your pots in the garden look wonderful. What would we do without Richard Jackson? I’m afraid I’ve given up growing strawberries as no matter what I do something gets to them! I’ve tried in pots, in the soil itself and in hanging baskets, always covering with nets but no joy. Never mind there’s always the shops!
I’ll sign off now Ali as I’m going to have a lazy afternoon watching my beloved tennis. Come on Andy!!
Will look forward to your book, I’m sure it will be worth waiting for.
Bye for now, love Sue xx

Hi Sue, I think that with all the posting problems on the blog last time, I forgot to tell you that I laughed out loud at Charlie’s comment! Bless him :). I hope you’re writing all these things down – I’m trying to! I’m sorry about his tonsillitis but he will be so much better once he’s had the operation. Yes the hospitals are completely understanding of parents needs to be with their child, and he may well be only in overnight. Lots of ice cream and jelly afterwards! I hope you’re enjoying Wimbledon,
      Love Ali xx

Hi Alison- lovely to read all your news. I was sitting on my garden swing a couple of weeks ago with a nice cup of tea and admiring my garden that was looking like fairyland, when there was a rustling in the lilac bush by the bird feeder. I had thought it rather strange that the food was going and I hadn’t seen any birds. Shock – horror – as cool as a cucumber and without a care in the world, and in the middle of the afternoon , a rat strolled across the lawn. Since then it has been a nightmare of regular sightings, with my Lhasa Apso flinging himself each night at the French Windows like a demented fiend. The whole episode came to a head last Wednesday night when I convinced myself I was either getting the start of Parkinsons or about to have a stroke. After a useless call to 111 i googled my symptoms which proved to be an anxiety attack lol. Anyway the whole incident has been passed to Pest Control, my last resort, because I don’t like killing anything. That thought evaporated rather quickly however with the idea that Mr and Mrs Rat and their offspring might decide to move in with me. Take Care – love you all at QVC x

    • QVC Copywriters June 27, 2018 at 8:32 am -  Reply

Ooh Valerie, your rat tale (tail) has left me cold! My bird food disappears so quickly and I’ve always thought it was the pigeons and jackdaws rather than the small birds. Maybe it was a rat! I’m sorry you were so stressed by the whole thing, and I do hope that now Pest Control have taken over you will no longer be troubled this way. It will be lovely for you to sit in your garden swing and enjoy the warm weather. Thank you for writing to me, keep in touch, love Ali xx

Hi Alison. Another great blog as always. Please don’t apologise about the replies. I’m sure all of us who leave comments on your blog always appreciate the time and trouble you take to reply to us; I know I do and thank you for it. I’m pleased to hear that your mum has had her worries eased. She’s a lovely lady who does so well. I wish them both well. We live next to a wooded area with quite a few squirrels in residence, who like nothing more than digging up our plants in our lovely tubs and baskets! My husband has resorted to sprinkling hot chilli powder in them, while not harming the squirrels. It seems to be working by deterring them so it might be worth a try. Honey gets even more gorgeous as she’s growing up fast. What a lovely little poppet. It’s a lovely photo of her, and I just love the way her nose crinkles when she smiles. She must bring you so much joy. I also loved your pic of the setting sun. Just glorious. I grew up and lived in Cambridgeshire for most of my life before moving to Southampton twelve years ago to be near family. I still miss the wonderful East Anglian skies which portrayed such beautiful sunrises and sunsets in such a flat county with hardly any hills. Congratulations and happy anniversary to you and Colin for your forthcoming wedding anniversary. I hope you have a lovely day. Take care. Liz x

It’s lovely that you take the time out to write to me here, and I will always do my best to answer you :). Thanks for the hot chilli powder tip – I may well try that. Someone suggested toothpaste but that’s quite noticeable and they make like it! Honey has raspberry flavoured toothpaste, and a dinky smile. Her mum used to wrinkle her nose in the same way years ago. It must be strange for you to move from the middle of the countryside to the coast and I’m sure you do still miss slackness and the views. Thank you for your kind anniversary wishes and for keeping in touch. Love Ali xx

Hi Ali. Sorry taken so long to get in touch. Been home for two weeks now from our Scandinavia and Russia cruise. Got home on the Saturday and went into hospital that Thursday for next stage of reconstruction. All went well still little sore but nothing that will keep me in doors. Very happy so far with the results the surgeons are amazing. This is the first chance to look at your bloggs. That child looks so much like you. Little Honey is your spitting image. Lovey child like her nanny. Caught the last of your jewelry show on Tuesday night to late to send you a tweet. Seem to be sleeping a lot since the op must of taken more out of me than usual. I love the puppy it’s gorgous just wish l could have one but getting to old to run round after a pup lovey as it is. Your pics from your holiday were great looks like you had a great time. So glad to see you back and l will endeavour to keep in touch better. Bye for now lots of love Viv 😘

Dear Viv, I am so glad to know that you had a wonderful time away on your cruise, and that your reconstruction continues to go well. Such a delight after having to accept the way things were for a while, and I’m glad that the surgeons are looking after you well. Yes, little Honey is growing so quickly, and is such a chatterbox! I do see myself in her sometimes, and we definition the same sense of humour! Sam is poppy is quite a handful, but he is coping pretty well and is coming to visit soon. The anaesthetic can make you very tired, so make sure you take it easy as I know the surgery is quite complicated. Thanks for writing to me as it’s always lovely to hear from you. Love Ali xx

The pinks and the pansies are over now, so I have replaced them with petunias and Alysom. I’m definitely a better gardener than I am a dancer, and I am in complete agreement with you that Julie Williams was amazing darling! I hope you enjoy the weekend, able to sit out in the garden rather than having to watch the football! Thanks for keeping in touch love Ali xx

    Hello Ali
Well another busy blog. I love reading all about what you get up to and about your family. Modern technology is great when it works efficiently and we know your followers will always get a response from you. Honey is just gorgeous and has the same cheeky grin as my youngest grandchild. They do bring so much into our lives. John has had his test results back and thank God he has the all clear. What better in life can you want? Just has to have regular check ups for the next 5 years. We got the news the same day we celebrated 49 of married life. Now all we need is to get my shoulder sorted. I am back to see the consultant on Tuesday although I don’t think that will be my last visit. After the steroid injection I became allergic to it and it made me really poorly for 5 days or so. Fingers crossed! Happy anniversary for the 24th to you both. Have a lovely day. Over and out for now. Take care and sending hugs and love as always. Judith xx

Hello there Judith, so glad you enjoyed the blog but better than that, was to read of Johns results. So delighted for you that it came on the same day you celebrated your 49th wedding anniversary. I do hope they will be able to find something soon to make your shoulder feel more comfortable, as I remember all too well how difficult it was trying to cope with daily tasks when you’re in so much pain. I’m glad that you liked the photos of Honey. I’m sure you get as much joy from your youngest grandchild, and I’m sure you take just as many photographs! Please pass on my congratulations to John, and my love to you both, Ali xx
