Jeruselem artichoke

It looks like ginger, smells like a potato, what is it? Plus competition!

This week –

  • What’s this? #organicVeggieBoxMystery!
  • ‘Dads on their own with baby are like…’ – hilarious Facebook Funny!
  • A 40th Birthday and an engagement – no, sadly not mine! Haha!
  • Win fab StriVectin bundle and OPI #50Shades set in my new competition!
  • And sneaky peeks at Lola Rose, Antthony OTO and Kim and Co offers!

Question of the week – it looks like ginger, smells a bit like potato, what is it? And any ideas what to do with it? If you know, leave me a comment below! I got it in my new delivery of a mixed organic veg box – another TiFFT* for 2015, as I’ve never had one before. I got it via an intro offer on Groupon – it’s been good so far, the carrots taste outstanding, but I had no idea what to do with this!! Go to bottom of page to find out more.

DEBBIE’S DIARY

Brother Glenn’s 40th Birthday

Had a loooovely start to the week with my ‘baby’ brother, Glenn’s 40th celebrations – here are a couple of pics of the fun including the Flint takeover of half a restaurant in Purley, and me and my lovely kids, sister and the birthday boy himself. A lovely time was had by all.

Me and Lin

me and glenn
Seems like only yesterday I was reading him ‘Narnia’ books and doing all the voices. He’s 12 years younger than me and I looked after him a lot, growing up. Plus three other siblings in between us so I had my hands full. My mum and dad used to run a social club and left me in charge quite often, in the days when we had an old reel to reel tape player and Linda and I used to record little made up songs to amuse ourselves. How different to the modern day equivalent eh? Kids can video their antics, edit it to music with captions and upload it before tea time! Talking of which, here’s a little video of the snowy stuff at mine this week.

Pogs in the Snow

I know many areas got snow this week – none like the US blizzards I’m sure, but yes, on Thursday night it arrived in Dorking, along with this new thing they’re calling ‘thundersnow’ storms. Sounds like a transformer or an X-man! The choccie Labradors loved it though. Had a little dog walk after – at least they were easy to spot!

pogs in snow

This sooooo needs a caption, doesn’t it! Can you think of one? If you didn’t see it first time round?

The snow continued for a bit, but didn’t lay very thick – shame for those who wanted to go sledging but happy it didn’t stay too cold in our neck of the woods! Mind you, don’t know what’s around the corner, right? Hope it’s not been too bad where you are? Let me know if it was really cold by leaving a comment below.

Snow in Dorking

Glenn Campbell and I had the ‘Big Freeze Fashion’, 3-hour special this week appropriately, and we were asking for tweets about how you keep warm – many of the pics involved pets! This is one of my own – soppy labrador, Patchy, in the snow. She’s 13 and a half now, but still quite sprightly, bless her, even though she’s away with the fairies quite a lot. She actually didn’t give a stuff for the snow – just kept looking for bunny poop snacks. Eurgh!

Patchy in Snow

I loved one of the tweets I received from a viewer, during the outerwear show,  talking about having been to a very unusual museum – celebrating the male member – yes really – in Iceland. Wish I could show you the pic but… ahem… you’re better off googling it instead! If you follow me on Twitter you can skim back and maybe find it amongst the tweets from Wednesday night if you like! (@debbieflint – by the way my basic guide as to how to tweet is here if you’d like to learn – it’s very easy – make me your first tweet! – click here to learn how to use twitter and join in during live shows.)

113550And talking of keeping warm during Winter, watch out for Glen and another outerwear special – it’s this Tuesday night at 10pm with Ali K (3rd Feb.) Here’s a fab bargain in the meantime – my favourite coat, as featured on our show.

Facebook Group – Back to You QVC – Continues All Year Round.

Bless those of you who have messaged me saying you feel bereft on a Monday night now ‘Back to You‘ is over for another series! Yes, it all went so well on Monday as my semi-autobiographical weightloss book ‘Till The Fat Lady Slims 2.0′ launched – it’s item 704285‘. Over 2000 of the total made (3000) had gone by Tuesday lunchtime. Thanks for all the genuine five-star reviews – it warms my heart to know this innovative system really helps.

Don’t forget you can still join in with us all online – just click on this link and read more about what’s happened this week on Back to You group – especially if you’re not on Facebook yourself!  Back to You News Update here. And how to join us!

Nephew Ricky’s Engagement to Sophie

Finally in my diary this week, I have to say congrats to my lovely nephew, Ricky, my sister Linda’s son, and his new fiancée Sophie, pictured here with me. And it was lovely to get together for a catch up at their bash, with my lovely girl Lolly as well! We have four nephews and twelve nieces amongst all the offspring so there will be plenty more of these in the years to come!

Guess the Presenter! Look at this old pic from the 80’s – one of my sister’s pals used to model years back, and found a photo shoot for Mothercare where she was on location with one of our presenters! Guess who?! Answer at bottom of this blog!

Mike, Marie-Francoise and a Monkey Hat! Haha! Behind the scenes shenanigans at Q Towers this week after our Kipling TSV launch with Marie Francoise Wolff and Floor Manager Mike – his balloon hat fashioned specially to mark the Kipling keyrings – will it catch on do you think?

Cobb streetBook of the Week – The Girl from Cobb Street This is the week Mira publishing, released the first in a series of period books set in the war by my lovely writing pal Merryn Allingham. She’s a prolific period novelist, and this one is her first under this pen name, focussing on Daisy’s struggle to make ends meet as the country is on the brink of WW2 with a baby on the way and a mysterious husband who is not all he seems. It’s doing well in the online charts already, bless her. She’s a great writer – give it a go. You can read more about my Book of the Week the Girl from Cobb Street – and get a link to buy it here.

RiWiSi NB – more about ‘all things book’ on my website on the ‘RiWiSi’ page – Read It Write it Sell it – where you can find tons of links about how to self-publish, writing workshops, book recommendations and links to all my own fiction including my steamy romance trilogy, three or four other novels and short stories and of course my ‘Till the Fat Lady Slims books’. Go here if you’re interested to find out more!

Casual Vacancy – Coming Soon! Can’t get more stellar in publishing than JK, right? Well Ms Rowling’s departure into ordinary fiction, ‘Casual Vacancy’ comes to the small screen mid Feb – I LOVED the book, on Audible, and am really looking forward to the TV series! Apparently a ‘lingerie shop’ created for filming in the Cotswolds upset a few people! Although I read that old ladies in the town said they had worse in their own wardrobes! Haha! It stars Michael Gambon, Julia McKenzie and Keeley Hawes and looks great – three one hour segments starting Feb 15th on BBC1.  More here. And here is an interview with JK herself too about the book when it first came out. Click here. Also fantastic news that her alter ego Robert Galbraith’s private dick hero Cormoran Strike will also make it to the screen too – I love these books even more.

Charlie and Will bearsCharlie and Will looking good! I love Will from Charlie Bears’ Facebook update this week about how great his lovely wife looks – how sweet! And so nice to see them looking so happy and Charlie herself looking so well too.

Watch. Considering the theme lately, I thought I’d pass on a recommendation from my pal Jill D-W who said this old BBC documentary, ‘Why Are Thin People Not Fat’ is pretty fascinating – just search for it on YouTube – some interesting snippets about naturally slim people.

Loloa Rose braceletSneaky peek! OK for all Lola Rose fans, here’s your sneaky pic of the TSV Friday 6th Feb – can’t wait!

BLOOPER ALERT –  hmmm – hardworking model… bed show… long day… cross them all and this is what you get!

Facebook funny Facebook Funny – omg I reeeeaaaally laughed when I saw this! Sooo funny! Bless! Go on, did your hubby (or you) do this?! Lol. Ps no baby faces were harmed in the making of this funny! Lol.

I would love to win either (or both) prizes – re 50 Shades, I could (just about) cope with the explicit story, but was appalled by the crimes against the English language. Frankly, I’d rather be painting my nails, lol, and all the frowning at her ‘inner goddess’ has given me wrinkles so I need Strivectin!

Love watching you with Anthony Debs, and like another of your presenters ,A.k. Appreciate your way of describing “how” clothes fit on you,and the difference of sizing between garments. As for Jerusalem artichokes,we cook them the Spanish way.added to stews and casseroles with garlic, they add that unique “taste” that our cooking does’nt capture.try, and enjoy!

It looks like a not too knobbly Jerusalem artichoke. It can be pureed, roasted, or boiled but also makes a nice creamy soup, great for the winter coming in from the cold with your gorgeous doggies. Here is a recipe I have used, you can omit the cream if need be.
    http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3145/jerusalem-artichoke-and-horseradish-soup
care if you cut it the skin discolours quickly so either use immediately or store in cold water with a little acid like lemon. I would love the OPI set as my longest closest friend is obsessed with it and wants me to travel from Swansea back to York just to go to the pictures to see it with her as I am the only person who would also enjoy it (says alot about me eh!!!!!) I would love to give this to her as an early Birthday present.

    Hi Debbie
The weird veg is known by two names
    1) SUNCHOKE
    2) JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE
It grows underground like a potatoe and has a nutty, somewhat sweet flavor,

  65. Shona Hathorn February 10, 2015 at 8:57 am -  Reply

    Hi Debbie,

The vegetables are Jerusalem artichokes. They are related to sunflowers and are also referred to as sun chokes. At Christmas I made a lovely velvety soup with them. When I was on a diet I had them roasted instead of potatoes as I didn’t need to count them in my daily points which was a bonus! Hope you enjoy them.
