CHILLIN’ WITH IZZY AND LARA
First, this week I got to hang out with my brother Glenn’s two youngsters – aged four and seven – including seeing 'Frozen' with sis Linda – which was very good btw (see review in ‘Watch’ below)! We visited the nearby party shop afterwards to choose a little pressie (see pic at the top).
Their mum and dad had to go to a funeral sadly, so I helped out. But I loved spending more time with them – not only going to the cinema but also having a nice meal out one day too after I’d picked them up from school with ‘nana Lesley’, my mum, and we met up with great niece Abi ‘the omen’ Grace and other family. Hehe!
Abi was under the table at the time.
Plus I was helping with homework, again! Well, it reminded me of all those years ago with my two (now 26 and 24) and made me realise that I guess it’ll be grandchildren next for me – at some point – and I’ll be back to regular helping all over again. But maybe the topic won’t be earthquakes, the Richter scale and plate tectonics (Lara is seven!)…
Anyway we had lots of fun this week. Must spend more time with the little ones – they grow up so fast! Izzy was at great pains to tell me that – since I’d asked her three times about turning the light off upstairs – "Now I’m annoyed", she said. She’s four…
And Abi Grace, well, she spent much of the meal under the table (hence she’s not in the pic! Lol). But is a joy too. Am sure Brad was that bad when he was two – after all, I recall a couple of Christmasses when I signed cards ‘from Debbie, Tony and Bradley-the-Hun’. But I must say I was quite pleased to toddle off home to four labradors, who don’t need help with subjects like Lara’s next homework – ‘mathletics’ (huh?)

Well, the Back to You QVC Facebook group was alight on Monday night as Back to You aired for the first time at 9pm! For those who don’t know, it’s the ‘new year, new you’ show, weekly throughout January, aiming to help with inspiration and motivation.

READ IT WRITE IT SELL IT
My weekly look at all things book!
Book of the Week – Fast Exercise by Dr Michael Mosley
OMG this is a fascinating book, packed full of exciting new info about HIT – high intensity training – which could do for exercise what his fasting book has done for diet.
The author of the 5:2 fasting diet lets us in on how intense but short, regular spurts of appropriately chosen work outs could give us a lot of the benefits of endurance training. So it may be that we do only need a few minutes a week to do at least something good in the body!
Some really astounding results of the tests he ran too – do check out the book to find out more, rather than not do anything! Really good ‘new year new you’ fodder. Click here for more info on Fast Exercise. It’s also on my debbieflint.com , ‘back to you’ page, this week too.
First Digital Library
How interesting – don’t know if you knew this, but the world’s first digital public library opened in Texas last year – Bibliotech has no paper books, just the ability to read stuff on computers and tablets! I liked finding out about it – you can too here from this news report.Interesting eh!
And do go to my extended RiWiSi-Go-Large for more info on the possible future of print book stores… (see below).

RiWiSi Go Large
More for would-be writers over on my website, on RiWiSi-Go-Large this week including an interesting take on the supposed ‘eBook slump’ that some writers have noticed – one Irish publisher reckons it’s vastly exaggerated. Plus ten books to improve your life, and publishing predictions for 2014 – all on www.debbieflint.com , RiWiSi page. Read more here.
Alright on the Night? As warned, my infamous ‘NoNo Cream Blooper’ got its airing on Sunday’s 'It’ll be Alright on the Night', amidst a plethora of dodgy props and Griff Rhys Jones quips. Go here to watch it on ITV Player. My bit was about 16 mins in.
A whole hour of bloopers this week – bargain! Lol.
P.S. if you see any, do let @ITVAlright know about it! As you can imagine, I was inundated with tweets and messages from people who saw it – during my George Simonton Show! Lol.
– The Sun snippet And after the blooper aired on national terrestrial TV, no less than two days later, there was Ali Ross in The Sun mentioning my New Year’s Eve launch with Jodie Prenger – not entirely complimentary – plus ca change! But getting called ‘QVC Heroine’ wasn’t all bad! Thanks Ali! Lol.
I was immensely proud to find out my levels are far above average for a 51 year old – in fact, they were on a par with some of the typical 20 year olds who are above average too! Whoop! Anyway, their new supplement has a patented fish protein which may help improve levels – read more on this blog when the time comes!
– Socks Mix Agree? I do – and I do it myself, frequently, after all if you can’t see it from a distance, then what the hey! (This nearly made it as my Facebook funny this week – and thanks to niece Becky for the share. But the following had me rolling around in disbelief! If it’s genuine, it’s incredibly stoopid!)
WATCH – four fab films in a one day film fest!
Well it was almost four in one day. Technically the fourth was the next day, ‘cos I gave up after the third two-hours-plus movie and watched the fourth the next day, but it was within 24 hours!
Nonetheless, my thirst for the big screen has been sated somewhat, after a drought over Xmas! Some amazing films still to see out there tho’ – can’t wait to see ‘The Railway Man’ with Colin Firth, for instance. Must get my act in gear eh? Due to writing my books, at the end of last year I had a dearth of movie action so it felt good to use one of my three days off this week to indulge! Did you see any of these films? Let me know!
Frozen – 8.5 out of 10 – a kids’ movie with enough for adults to keep you thoroughly entertained for a couple of hours. Superb characterisation and considering it’s a cartoon, it’s a real spectacle for the eyes with all the effects and face movements etc. Some ‘keep a tissue handy’ moments, too, be warned! But a very uplifting ending – well, what do you expect from Disney?! (I want to live in Erindell…) See the trailer here.
Last Vegas – 9.25 – OMG OMG you just have to see this film! Everyone of a ‘certain age’ and many younger, you’ll absolutely love this. Such a clever script – and deNiro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and Michael Douglas play their parts extraordinarily well.
I’ve always loved Kevin Kline, since ‘A Fish Called Wanda’, and top marks to him for playing this OAP role – he has one of the most tear-inducing scenes of the whole film, and there are several. Plus tons of laughs. Excellent supporting cast too – great older female role in Mary Steenbergen (Back to the Future 3). I do hope this one crops up frequently during award season! I will definitely see this film again and again – it gets 9 1/4 – and regulars you’ll know how rarely I give above 9! Very, very enjoyable and with a nicely unpredictable twist or two, I hope you love it as much as I did!
American Hustle – 8.75 Another nomination-packed Oscar contender here. And quite rightly too. I have to say Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper (most of the time and especially since 'Limitless' and 'Silver Linings Playbook'), and Jennifer Lawrence have my utmost respect and are actors for whom I would see a film. And Amy Adams too, who played her usual Amy Adams angst-ridden character very well once more.
All of them fill the screen in this ‘based on a true story’ tale set again in the 1980’s. Lovely soundtrack too, but masterpiece performances all round. And a stellar one from Jeremy ‘Bourne Legacy’ Renner too. Blooming loved it. Tell me if you agree! See the trailer here.
Anchorman 2 – 7.75 – fun, stooped and absolutely hilarious in places, this follow up to one of the most kooky, un-politically correct films of the last decade, takes us to 1980 where Will Ferrell’s character continues to embarrass and experience unlikely career-twists.
LOVED Steve Carrell’s ‘Brick’, and Bridesmaids’ Kristen Wiig playing his female counterpart. And of course, extra marks just for having Paul Rudd in it! Lol. Also highly recommended if you suspend reality for about two thirds of the film! Saw it with a packed auditorium too, which was nice, hearing the laughter in all the right places, and some of the wrong ones!
TV Tip – Mr Selfridge returns, Sunday 19th. Can’t wait!
– As Lee Hohbein teased on Facebook this week, a fab new Acer Chromebook will be arriving as a Today’s Special Value sometime in the next few weeks!
– A brand new range from one of your favourite brands – and mine! And believe me they smell good! Here’s a pic of five of us with Sarah from Liz Earle doing some training on the fab new fragrance body range coming out soon – you may have read about it in some of the press, well we’ll be amongst the first to launch it! More news here soon, and on Friday night midnight TSV launch show! (10th).
It’s a bumper bundle of superskin goodies, with an emphasis on hands and body too. Do join me for the two hour show till 2am live if you can, or watch the morning repeat of the launch, 7-9am Saturday morning (11th).
And don’t forget to enter this week’s blog comp! (see above) – you could win one!
– Richard Jackson’s Garden continues every weekend – did you get the bird food last Monday? If so thought this cute squirrel might make you smile! Join Richard Sunday 9-11am, this week with Craigy!
NEXT WEEK – What happened on the next Back to You – will Jilly Jones feed me yukky or nice? Will you join in on our One Minute Challenge? And what happens when I go see ‘Happy Days, the Musical’ press night on Tuesday!
Have a great week!
