Let’s celebrate!

Julia with Simon WilsonLast Tuesday, although I must admit it feels like weeks ago, was the party to celebrate the launch of my book hosted by Simon Wilson at his Butler & Wilson shop on Fulham Road.

Simon had promised me a party when I first told him I was writing a book back in 2011 but I thought he might have forgotten or even changed his mind, so I was thrilled when he insisted that we must do something to mark this fairly momentous occasion for me.

I was not involved in the planning as it was Simon's idea, and anyway I was away on holiday, but our marketing department at QVC joined forces with Simon to plan and execute the party so that everyone who was able to attend would have the best possible experience.

Julia signing booksI confess I was slightly apprehensive when an email arrived whilst I was in Mauritius entitled 'There's good news and there's bad news'. For a horrible moment I thought all the invitations had been sent out and no-one wanted to come!! As it turned out it was the exact opposite, most of the invitees wanted to come so it had to be on a first come first served basis and I apologise if you missed out.

It had been decided to hold two events so that it would not be overcrowded. The afternoon was mostly for QVC customers, and the evening was a mixture of family, friends, customers and my publishers, and lovely model Ali was in attendance at both. It was wonderful to meet so many of you and an enormous thrill to hear your positive comments about the book and my pleasure to personalise the signed QVC copies. I had so many of you remarking about similarities between my life and yours.

We enjoyed champagne and canapes, well I say we, I stuck stalwartly to the elderflower water as I was 'drunk' on the atmosphere and wanted to savour every moment. Simon was very generous with the raffle prizes but it was the evening draw that made me laugh. I had asked prior to drawing out the first winning ticket if my family were allowed to win the prizes… I think you know what's coming. The first ticket out of the bag was my son Daniel's!!!!! We drew the other two prizes and then drew again for the prize that Daniel had very graciously put back.

Julia at her book launch party Julia's cake

We also had a very special model to give Ali a hand in demonstrating the prizes. My friend of 30 years, Denise, showed them off 'Price is Right style'… that brought back a few memories I can tell you. The highlight of my evening was when Simon produced a stunning cake with the picture from the back cover of my book on it, filled with fresh fruit and cream. I cut it up for my guests to enjoy, or take home in their 'party' bags but there was still half the cake for me to take home, and most of that I took in for the backstage gang at QVC.

For those of you who would like to get a feel of the party Will Gowing filmed the evening event and you can view it here…

It certainly was a lovely celebration and we are celebrating again on QVC this weekend. This time it is nothing to do with my book, it is Founder's Weekend. It is twenty years since QVC UK was incorporated and less than six months later we were on air with our first broadcast. The rest, as they say, is history!

Simon will be part of our celebrations with his Couture show at 6pm on Sunday, so I hope you will join us for that, and all the other huge brands that QVC now offers.
Much love, Julia xx

Hi Julia. It was lovely to meet you again at the afternoon’s party. I came with my friend Sue. We both met you before at the Pilates masterclass held about 2/3 years ago with Marjolein. It was a lovely party and was a lovely way to “launch” your book. I must admit, I had to read Chapter 101 even though I am only about a quarter of the way through it (I am just about to read Chapter 27) and I had to tell you that I mentioned you being looked after by Professor Goldstone at UCH to my boss at work. She is a lady lawyer who is the Chairman of the charity the Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund which donates huge grants for research into leukaemia and, therefore, has dealings with UCH. When she found out who was looking after you, she said you are in the best of hands and believes he is the best his field in the UK and said for me to tell you this. So I thought you would like to know this.
It was lovely to meet Simon at the party too and Ali and I passed on your love to Beulah who I texted the next day. Things are looking positive for her at the moment and the drug seems to be working, so that is very good news for her.
It was also lovely to meet Chris, who is such an easy person to chat to and very friendly. I am really enjoying your book and am looking forward to reading the rest of it.
Keep well Julia, lots of love Fiona

    Hi Jules.
Congratulations on achieving the completion of your book. It is something I have always wanted to do, write a book about my life experiences. To be fair, I don’t know that I couldn’t, because I have never been confident enough to give it a go. I can, consequently, appreciate the effort and sheer hard work you will have devoted to it. I bet the end result makes it all worthwhile. I’m a ‘non-fiction’ kind of gal; true crime is my thing, watching docs on serial killers and the like. Book-wise, I’m the same, not really into novels, and especially not romance novels! Biographies are another interest of mine. Whatever I do, I do with the intention of absorbing knowledge continuously.
Nice to see you looking so well on air. Hope things are looking a lot more positive for you. Wish they were for me; Our office has just been relocated to Exeter from Whitehaven in Cumbria, and we have all been mde redundant so, for the first time in years, I’m looking for work! I’ve only been finished a fortnight, and I’m bored silly! I know we complain about work, but it gives life meaning. I think.
You take care, Jules. Speak soon.

    Hi Julia,
It sounds and looks as if you had a fabulous time at the party. And if anyone deserves one you do. You see Simon did not forget his promise. Love the cake, it sounded delicious. It must have been nice to split the party into two and be able to meet Customers and then have your friends and family
With all those draw tickets and you draw out your own, not once but three times, it is hard to believe isnt it. I expect there were some lovely prizes.
Going to start reading your book this week, must make time for it, picked it up the other night to start reading, and then had phone calls so did not get round to it, am looking forward to reading it. You have been very successful with it.
Hope you are feeling okay health wise, you look really well, but it is how you feel inside isnt it, and how you feel about yourself. I must say Alison and Anika are also looking really well. People say you must be positive but I guess it must be really hard sometimes.
What a super day Saturday was, it was lovely to have the sun, makes you want to get on and do so much, only problem with the sun is that it shows up the dirty windows etc.
Anyway take care and have a great weekend.
    Love Jean XX

    Hello Fiona
I’m so pleased you were able to come to the party and that you had a good time. It’s good to hear that your work colleague speaks so highly of Professor Goldstone who we affectionately call ‘the Prof’ (not to his face I might add). Many people have told me how lucky I am to be in such good hands, so I have total confidence in him. I am also delighted to hear that Beulah is doing well.
Delighted that you are enjoying the book – maybe you would be kind enough to post a review on the website when you’ve finished it.
    Chris sends his regards!!!

    Hi Louise
Thanks for the congratulations for finishing my book. You are right it takes a lot of time and dedication but most of all self discipline to sit and write for hours when there might be other things you would prefer to be doing.
I was really sorry to hear about your redundancy and hope that you have been appropriately compensated? If so maybe you could use a little of your spare time to start jotting a few words down …. you have to start somewhere. Good luck in your job search and keep positive, sometimes things happen for a reason.

    Hi Jean
I was a very lucky girl to have the support of Simon and QVC for the launch party. I’m thrilled with the success of he book – it’s very different talking about something so personal rather than the brainchild of someone else. It’s not on air again now until the beginning of May so maybe if you’ve read it by then you could ring in during the show?
It was a lovely sunny day on Saturday but quite cold in the Main Stand at Selhurst Park where unfortunately Palace played out a nil/nil draw, so we didn’t even have the excitement of jumping up for gal celebrations to keep us warm!!
Hope you managed to get your windows all shiny and clean

    Hi Diane
Hope you managed to catch the Couture Show on Sunday – there were some spectacular pieces.
Both parties were lovely but quite different really. It was great to watch my family relax and enjoy themselves – it’s been almost a year since the shock of the diagnosis. Chris wants us to have a celebration each year on the day ….. kind of another year and I’m still here ……. I hope there will be quite a few of them.
Have you started reading the book yet ……. did you get to ‘your’ chapter yet?

Yes the dress I am wearing on that promo is a Nina Leonard but we don’t have that style in stock. I think there may be a sleeveless version of it on our website.

Sorry to be so formal but you didn’t leave your name. Thank you for all your lovely compliments it’s very kind of you.
I’m so happy you are going to buy my book and I really hope you will enjoy it. I haven’t mentioned it much but I will be giving a donation from profit made to the Rotary International ‘End Polio Now’ campaign, so thanks to everyone who has purchased for contributing.

    Hello Anne
What a lovely post. Simon has truly been a wonderful friend to me and I realise how lucky I am to have him. I have needed to ‘lean’ on certain friends and family members this past year and they have been there for me.
I really hope you will enjoy the book

    Hi Julia
That was a lovely response you made to my comment on your last blog. It really touched me. Thank you so much. x
I think I was too busy being in awe of the fact that you actually drove to Barcelona alone at such a young age (I don’t think I’d do it now!) that the fact that you stayed with a group of perfect strangers kind of washed over me! It was a bit weird when one of them tried to get in your bedroom although, if they actually meant you harm, the barricade at the back of the door probably wouldn’t have stopped them. Thank goodness and all that.
Looks like a great party at Simon’s. I would have loved to have been there but I really enjoyed watching the clip on your blog. It’s obvious you two have a very special friendship.
I’m down in the big city to celebrate my 50th at the end of this month so I may even make it into his Fulham Road shop. I’ll be sure to pop in and say hello this time if Simon is in whether I’m wearing Lola Rose or not! We have a lovely weekend planned including seeing ‘Burn The Floor’ and actually spending my birthday at one of my favourite places ‘Paradise Wildlife Park’. I’m also hoping to bump into Bob the street cat! Thank you again for my book especially with the message you wrote which I will treasure as a lovely commemoration of my big 5 0.
Lovely to see Keeley on here.
    Lots of love

    Hi Marian
Sounds like you have a fantastic weekend planned for your 50th – unfortunately I don’t think it will involve Simon as he is away on a business trip straight after our show together on the 22nd April.
I don’t think I would undertake a solo drive to Barcelona through France these days, and I certainly wouldn’t encourage Sophie to do it ……. sadly times have changed!
Looking forward to catching up with Keeley but sad I don’t have any shows with her this time

I’m so pleased to hear that you enjoyed reading my book ……. I guess I’ve packed a lot into my fifty six years and sincerely hoping there will be a few more interesting things in my future! Please don’t concern yourself over my latest health issue, I am in very good hands and responding well to the medication.
Simon and I have a show together on the 22nd April at 9pm – hope you’ll be watching

Julia, I am, as always, trailing behind everyone else! It was only yesterday watching you on screen and, yet again, telling my 18 year old daughter how much I liked watching you present, that I read your blog and learnt of your health issues. It really saddened me but there you were looking fantastic!
I started buying from QVC about 7 years ago and was thrilled when I discovered I could buy Butler and Wilson. I lived in London for many hears in my 20’s and the South Molton Street shop was a favourite haunt. I love it when you are presenting with Simon. No offence to the other presenters but it is just not the same without you!
I wish you well, congratulations on all of your achievements and I look forward to many more shows with Simon.
