Keeping fit and keeping it fun!

Hi all!

Many of you know I have recently lost weight using Diet Chef (check out our online brand page for more info). I have also taken up some light exercise in the form of belly dancing! It's so much fun. It's women only, all ages, all shapes and sizes and it has a very interesting history.

Belly-dancing exercise

Many people think of belly dancing in an erotic or titillating way but its origins are a far cry from today's Westernised view of it. It was originally done in a long kaftan-like robe and only in front of same sex groups. It has evolved and branched out in different directions like all things do.

The classes I go to are based on original Egyptian belly dancing. They put on shows regularly and I have been invited to take part in a dance display in November at the Ashcroft Theatre in Croydon! I haven't yet decided if I am brave enough to bare my belly and shimmy my stuff but watch this space and I'll let you know.

I was looking through some old piccies and getting all soppy about my little babies who are not little babies anymore, being 15 and 17 now, when I came across this photo (right).

It really made me chuckle, not least because of the hideous decor - it was not my choice! Just one of the drawbacks of rental properties! Tom and Chrissie were pretty inseparable when they were small and they wanted to do everything I did.

You can see me using baked bean tins as weights and my creative son using his Thomas the Tank Engine trains. My girly Chrissie chose Barbie dolls as her weights. It just made me smile seeing it again. It also brought a little tear to my eye to think they're growing up so fast. Jeez, I love my bonkers kids so much. Just love 'em and wanted to share.

So what do you do to keep fit? Have you taken up some unusual form of fitness or dance? I 'd really love to hear from you.

    hi catherine, no strange excercize for me, as ive said before in my previous item reviews that ive purchaced…i slipped a disc in my lower back, and was off work i,ll for six months…..which i became very imobile….but thanx to qvc and marjolene i treated myself to the areo pilates………I KNOW YOU HAVE IT ALSO………..and wow catherine how gr8 it is, after consulting my gp, orthopaedic consultant and having my physiotherapy, and now use my pilates everyday……….its amazing,,,oh got the back magic also, another gr8 product….so im affraid thats all my gym consists off….not bad hey….also catherine you prob member me having sports car and my lulu guiness bag…….when my back was poorly ,i couldnt even manage to sit in my car….arrrr i was so upset ,ha ha…….bye for now luv sandi xxxxxx

    hi catherine, its sandi again…..sorry i forgot to mention your beautiful children….nice to see pics of them………i have a girl and a boy,,,older than yours,son 23 and daughter 19…..big hey,,,,its amazing where all there young years have gone,,,,,thanku for letting us see your children, i member mine playing with me like that xxxxxxxxxxx sandi x im a nurse by the way, just a little bit of information of what i do,so being a patient in hospital was not nice being on the other side….but thankfully better nowxxx sandi

    Hi Catherine
    I can not believe that you have kids that are 15 and 17, you look so young for that, whenever you talked about your children I always though they might be about 5 and 7.
    Good for you, you look great.
    About keeping fit, I used to play tennis a lot, but I was in a car accident 2 years ago, and now I can only play every now and then.
    Belly dancing is great for keeping fit, Iam from EGYPT and some how we did not have to learn to dance, they say you just find yourself doing it, and that is true.
    Whenever Iam invited to a party my friends play Arabic music and make me dance to it, Iam not that great but somehow thay all love it.
    Can not wait to see your photos doing it. Take care and enjoy it.

    So glad you’ve joined the ranks of shimmying girls! It really is the best fun & attracts the loveliest people; and where else can you be jingly, sparkly AND tone up? When I started dancing 8 years ago, I was immediately struck by how non-judgemental Arabic dance is; everyone is dancing & learning together, not glaring at you because you’ve ‘got it wrong’ – what a joy! As for the show – go for it, lady! As we always say in our group, what could be better than dressing up & showing off with your friends? Hope you continue to enjoy yourself, all the best, Kirstin.

    I love your hair by the way. It looks very beautiful and blond really suits you.
    I’ve recently joined a gym! eek! not my first port of call I have to say, but after a C section 20 months ago, I’m feeling the effects and my muscles are very slack lol. I am enjoying it though. I’ve done belly dancing in the past and love it! it is such fun and great for a gentle work out. It would be great to hear how you get on. I love seeing your shows too as you are always so friendly and happy. Especially the craft hours when I get a chance. keep up the good work, and your 2 children are so cute in that picture,

    Hi Sandi,
    Lovely to hear from yo again. Thanks for writing in. So pleased to hear that pilates & back magic have helped you. Steve and I keep considering going for the back magic when it comes on air. I love to stretch my back out even though I don’t suffer from back complaints. It just feels really good to do.
    Glad you like the piccy! I don’t often put pics of the kids up online. I guess because it was my choice to be on TV and not theirs I feel I ought to wait til they are 18 and it’s their own choice if they want to be seen. Plus being 15 and 17 it’s all too easy to embarrass them and I don’t want to do that! You can just hear it now ‘Ohhh muuuuuum!!!’. Mind you, Chrissie once came on to play with a remote controlled helicopter when she was little!
    The time does fly so fast. So many people think teen years are awful but I like every stage of them growing up. It’s always new and changing.

    Great to hear from you. I’m sorry to hear of your accident and wish you continued recovery. I’ve never really played tennis but it does look very good for keeping fit. I would think it helps with alertness too.
    Wow, it’s fab hearing about your belly dancing. I wish I’d grown up doing it..it’s so lovely. There are lots of videos on youtube of dancers. It’s such an art. There’s a Turkish dancer called ‘Didem’. She does it all in high heels! Amazing!
    The club I go to has trips to Egypt, workshops, displays and so on and so on. It’s very social.
    If I’m ever brave enough to bare my belly I’ll post a pic! It no longer looks quite like the pic in this blog!

    Hi Kirstin!
    How nice to hear from a fellow ‘shimmier’! You’re so right about the people and the non judgemental approach. You do just feel as though you’re all in it together rather than competitive.
    You’ve spurred me on to (maybe) do the show! I’m still fairly new but have been moved up to the advanced class. I watched the more experienced girls do a ‘drum solo’ dance last wednesday and that’s what I now can’t wait to do. Love love love it!
    Which group do you dance with? The one I’m with is called ‘Hipsinc’. I came across them when they did a display at a local summer fair.

    hi catherine,only new to qvc but it feels like i’ve known u for ages u are lovely…love dancing but not so brave enough to go for classes;you go girl! you look fantastic.

    Hi Catherine. Great to hear you’ve joined us girls strutting your stuff. People do not realise just how much exercise belly-dance is. However I must warn you. . . .it is extremely contagious!!!! I went to my 1st lesson for a bit of a laugh, within 6mths I was dancing 5 nights a week plus attending workshops & I now teach my own classes twice a week locally. Dont know if it would be of interest to you but once a year at the end of October there is a 3 day bellydance convention in Torquay where you can paticipate in all different classes with some of the top dancers, its fantastic. As for the show you have been asked to take part in get out there & wiggle, I promise you wont look back. Go girl!!!!!!!
