Hope that you are all as delighted as me to see the clocks go forwards soon. It wasn’t that long ago I was blogging about the clocks going backwards, I must say it hasn’t been a bad winter at all. Living down south (London) it seems to be noticeably warmer, when my brother comes to visit he always says it’s a good 3 or 4 degrees warmer than up north. Our daffodils are well and truly blooming but my Mum says she’s not seen a sign of theirs yet in Manchester. Anyway the clocks going forward meaning we may lose an hour’s sleep but gain a summer!!!
In line with spring/summer I’ve been trying to increase my levels of activity recently. I used to be very physically fit; spinning, running and gym sessions, but since I was ill I’ve lost all my fitness. I have managed to do yoga, Pilates and swimming but it’s a much less energetic approach to exercise. On a recent holiday to Tenerife in search of a bit of winter sun I hired a car and meandered around lots of towns and coastal villages. For the most part Tenerife is a tourist destination but I found a different side, full of culture and great Canarian cuisine. I’ve got to say that I feel like I saw the real Tenerife this time, away from the tourist resorts it is a wonderful, diverse island. Driving on the other side of the car and road was a bit tricky at first but I persevered and was fairly confident after a few days.
Aside from the wonderful scenery every place we visited I noticed these fabulous little outdoor activity stations free for the locals and visitors to use. Almost like an outdoor gym, various stations focussing on different muscle groups in the body, really simple to use clever designs. Mostly the ones on the coast were located on the sea front so you could do a little work out with spectacular views. You don’t need any special clothing or footwear you just get on with each one. Locals of all ages were making use of them, one lady was even shoeless! It made me wonder why I’ve never seen these in the UK, do they exist? I know we don’t have weather quite as favourable but they could be used from March to October even in this country. The ones I had a little go on seemed really robust, I’d love to see them pop up around the UK.
Made me think there are lots of ways to introduce more activity into our lives other than joining a gym or buying expensive equipment. Try walking to destinations not too far from you, maybe get off the bus a stop or two earlier, even gardening now the weather is more favourable.
Let me know if you have exercise stations in your local vicinity and I will get in touch with my local council to make some enquiries, I think it would really help shape a fitter nation and embrace community spirit. Embrace well being this spring/summer, it’ll make you feel a whole lot better. After all health is wealth!
