I wanna be like ‘Baloo-hoo-hoo': Health check chat and sunshine woes

11

Can't go in Sun pieceThis week –
– My life in the shade – living with dodgy skin!

– Baloo the spaniel steals the show – well part of it…

– Health check time – the most flattering pic ever (not!)

– Flower food TiFFT (Try it for the First Time) – what’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever eaten?!

– And sneaky peeks of Revitalash, H2O X5 steamer pack and Trinny and Susannah’s Magic Shorts

– Plus Yankee Candle’s Stephen spills the beans!

YELLOW PERIL
It’s soooo hottttt! We all love the sun, right? ‘Course we do! Well what about if you couldn’t go in it? Many of us are photosensitive and if you didn’t know already, I have a version of that particular malady.

After being asked by a few of you, I’ve shared a new blog on my website for the very first time about my feelings on what has made me different my whole life. It’s not much in the grand scheme of things. It’s in the Back to You, weekly Monday blog on my website – a full explanation of what it was like to be growing up ‘photosensitive’ in a family of sun-lovers, go here to find out more. Do feel free to leave me a comment there, or at the bottom here. More about Back to You below, by the way.

As we speak I am in fact sitting under a canopy in 30 degree heat writing this blog and looking out at the distant sea. I’m high up on the terrace at the Priory Bay hotel in the Isle of Wight (hence not being on Christmas in July – booked ages ago and I didn’t realise!). We’re here to tour the Liz Earle HQ tomorrow on a special trip; ‘we’ being me, Craigy, and Claire – I’ll bring you the low down next week.

BALOO BRINGS IT!

Debbie and Baloo, Pina FaunaAwwww! What a little sweetie my daughter’s dog Baloo was when we did Pampered Pets last Monday! She was absolutely adorable and stole the show… well, almost. To be honest, no one could steal it from Levi the poggy from Pet Munchies – after all, he performs at Crufts! Lol.

Little Baloo did me proud! See the blooper in the QVC section below for clips.

She was so tired out afterwards though, this was the sight that met my eyes when I went back into the lounge once Lauren and her boyfriend Nick had gone to bed. Baloo snuk up on the sofa and made herself… ahem!… comfortable! Lol.

Baloo zonked outGreat pet show again tho’ – the Pine Fauna skin and pet coat spray sold out yet again, and guest Gill’s little Maisy behaved herself too! Order yours if you have pets with itchy, scratchy problems.

Also, the Neater Feeder gang brought us a clever idea - Polar Bowls – soooo good to keep pets’ water cool in this hot weather. Daisy and Gracie, my choccie labs, couldn’t get left out, could they?!

Daisy and Grace FeederLook at these two – very happy with their new feeder in cranberry colour – #LookMumAllGone! Yes, Daisy lost out in the pet-vote – but maybe next time… Or maybe not! Is the QVC world ready for ‘escape dog’…?!

HEALTH CHECK CHALLENGE

Debbie Health CheckI was debating whether to show this pic of me at this week’s Nuffield Health Check – it’s hardly flattering! Lol! But what the heck.

I went along as part of an annual company thing and it was all fine and very reassuring. Overweight (natch) but most measurements were fine and some were great.

The check we have done is very thorough – as I said afterwards, I had nearly every orifice examined – except me belly button! Haha!

There’s even a spine check where they run a little machine down your spine and it recreates the shape of your vertebrae – very clever! Mine was all fine – and I discovered I’ve grown a quarter of an inch! Yay! So, I’m back to saying I’m 5″4 in fashion shows from now on (ok, rounding up, but what’s a quarter of an inch between friends?! Hehe!)! Lol!

Debbie X-rayI am, naturally, overweight and need to lose a stone or so – so it’s back to Freedom Eating. Actually, I’m writing ‘Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0– the When Diet’ for when Back to You comes back on-air for four Mondays in September.

So I’m Freedom Eating my way to slimness! Hehe!

Debbie Health Check graphOne of the most fascinating things was the lying down/standing up test – which gave a measurement of a quite acceptable ‘normal’ for my ‘graphic representation of physical fitness’ – given my age etc.

It’s the little yellow diamond at position 8:6. Yay (The blue is where athletes would be)! Cholesterol was good, lowish blood pressure which is good, lung capacity very good, heart good, just a couple of little minor things to look at – so all in all pretty good! I’ll do for another year!

Book of the Week – ‘Monsoon Mists’ by Christina Courtenay, Choc-Lit

Monsoon Mist Book of the WeekDue out imminently on 7th August, this charming romance takes us back to 1759 as the hero Jamie travels to escape his troubled past, and starts a new life as a gem trader in the bustling streets of India. There he meets the rich, beautiful ‘ice widow’ Zarmina, a lady with a dark secret.

Christina is one of Choc-Lit’s prolific authors, so it’d be good to get into her work as there’s lots to read. Her reviews are great too, go here to find out more about her.

BTW – Just so you know, Choc-Lit is a publisher specialising in heart-rending and witty romances – often from both hero and heroine’s points of view.

Choc-Lit Light is also a series of light-hearted love stories. Lots more on their website – Google it to see more. (P.S I hear they may be launching steamy novels next year – Hot Chocolate – haha – good name! I wonder if I should submit ‘Hawaiian Affair’?! Or Escape – or Retreat – or all three?! ;-) )

SNIPPETS

Snippet - TiFFT - I ate a nasturtiumFlower power TiFFT*
I had a fabulous ‘first’ this week in the Isle of Wight, sitting writing my blog on a lovely terrace with the sea in the distance – a meal of salmon and beetroot and… blooms!

Fennel, Borage (the purple ones) and a nasturtium – all edible – really unusual too!

What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever eaten? Leave me a comment below!

Lacey drawersLacey Drawers!
Well! Who would’ve thought it?! Lol! My Slim ‘n Lift hour had lots of the ladies backstage agog as Janie Renner brought us these Dita Von Teese-esque bloomers! Sold really fast too – just shows you what a wide range we do nowadays eh? For me, they have to be wide… haha!

Back To You NormalNormal – what is it anyway?!
I like this saying – a lot!

Family Day OutWeekend Break a la Campervan
Remember the campervan? My brother Glenn and his wife Boki are out most weekends in it. Their girls have joined them now they’ve broken up for summer.

As kids we enjoyed long hols in Combe Haven caravan park in St Leonards near Hastings, but I think a motorhome is even better – lucky Izzy and Lara!

Snippet Al FrescoAl Fresco Nosh Of course, not to be outdone, Lauren and Nick are making the most of the balmy evenings including with this little med-veg extravaganza in our own back yard – literally! Let’s hope the weather continues, eh?!

What have you been doing in your garden this summer?

Facebook Funny
Take a look at this funny little poggy doing stair-surfing – it’s his tail that makes me laugh the most! Lol!

WATCH

You have GOT to watch this – sooo funny! At the moment, my writing group and I are putting together an anthology of short spooky stories for Hallowe’en and my lovely beta readers (Debbie’s Readers group on Facebook) are discussing ‘how scary is scary.’

Well if you have any fears whatsoever about ‘The Walking Dead’ film – just watch this. It’s another ‘bad lip reading’ video on YouTube – where they put together alternative sound tracks for famous movies/videos. You’ll never be scared again! Funny!

P.S – I hear the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ trailer is now out too – have a Google! Ooer! Lol x

Next week – Liz Earle training on the Isle of Wight!

Have a great week!
Best wishes
Debs

Hi debs, hope you’re well? How’s your skin? Mine is struggling! I have to say again you lot are soo lucky having those health tests. Must cost a bomb for normal people? Wish we could all have one! I haven’t used revitalash btw but don’t think I will. I just have this thing that while I love beauty and see the point of it I also think the world is going a bit Ott on beauty. It just seems that none of us can have any ‘flaws’ anymore! Like lashes that don’t hit your glasses are flaws!? Sorry just a bug bearer for youngsters growing up. Night night. Hope you’re sleeping in this heat! X
