I still can-can!

Julia's mum in Spain Just to update you on my trip to Spain with my mum. We had a great time together and the weather was very kind to us indeed! Mum posed for a few pics and this one on the left is my favourite.

She even learnt a little bit of Spanish – 'entrada de camiones' – which she delivers proudly to anyone who will listen. Not sure how useful 'lorry entrance' in Spanish will be in her little Nottinghamshire village though!

The break seems like ages ago now as it's been a very busy week for me, and not just at work. I also went to Debbie Greenwood's birthday/wedding anniversary party along with Ali K, Dale, Pipa, Claire, Anthony and Deb Flint.

It was a really enjoyable evening culminating in a 'dance-off' between the boys and the girls. We were doing OK, but the boys were possibly edging it, so Claire did a few high kicks, another guest did a forward roll and I did my party piece – the splits! Fortunately no-one caught it on camera… I hope!

Julia and the cruise ship dance troope It reminded me of when I used to perfom the can-can when I was a dancer on a cruise ship. I could ask you which one you think is me, but that's too easy, so what year do you think this photo was taken? I know I'm ancient, but take note – this is a colour photo!!!

Much love,
Julia. xx.

HI Julia, what a lovely photo of your mum, she has a great figure, looks ljke it was beautiful there too, I read on the other blog that your mum has survived breast cancer, I am so pleased for you that she is ok now,my parner has survived throat cancer, he lost his voice box [it hasnt shut him up though] he is doing really well now , uses pilates machine more than i do. cant keep the good ones down as they say. really good that you can still do the splits, about photo of you in can-can dress at a guess I would say late seventies to early eighties. love Jane xx

    Hi Julia
That’s a lovely photo of your mum and she looks very youthful.
Was your can-can photo taken in the late 70’s? Just a guess!

    Hello Jane
What nice things to say about my mum – she has kept her figure through teaching dancing! So pleased to hear your hubby is doing so well and partaking in my favourute form of exercise, Pilates, (with the possible exception of swimming!) which is back on QVC the weekend of the 7th and 8th. It is the main reason I can still do the splits.
You were close with your guess but not quite ‘on the money’.
    love to you both

    Hi Jill
I think it must be the funky sunglasses – we had to buy them from a local beach shop for a fiver as she had broken hers on the journey. I also got her a sunhat ( pictured ) to protect her fair skin which I’m sure Ali Young would approve of.
Very close on the can-can photo
    much love

    Hi Julia
Great to know you and your Mum had a great time on holiday.I think your can-can picture must be in the eighties as you are only a few years older than me.I saw the photos of Debbie Greenwoods birthday. You were the culprit who done the splits.Go Girl! Bye the way your friend Ali Keenan looks a bit the worse for wear at the party.
Julia you also said on your last blog about Sophie in a girl group, whats is called?
    Take Care.

    Hello Sylvia
What photos of Debbie’s party? ……….. where are they? They didn’t catch one of me in the splits surely? It was only a ‘split’ second LOL. Ali was fine when I left at about 1 a.m. – maybe I missed some action??
Good guess on the can-can photo, but wrong decade I’m afraid.
Sophie is in a band called 4FLAVA – I will put up a link so you can see and hear them on my next blog.
    much love

    Hi Dorothy
You should have seen her when she put the hat on too!! I’m sorry to hear your mum and dad are not in such good health, but at least they have you which must be a great comfort to them.
Like Sylvia, you are in the wrong decade ……… told you I was ancient!
much love to you and your parents

Hi Julia – lovely photo of your mum – clearly a very elegant lady. I remember my mum had a gorgeous pair of glamorous shades just like the ones your mum is wearing back in the 70s….must ask her to dig them out.
I must be really dense because I cannot tell for sure which one you are in the photo. I think you are doing the splits on the left hand side as you look at it but the girl standing top right could be you too…something about the smile…
I would say 1979 for the date.
I’d be interested to know more about Sophie’s band too.. what are they called?

    Hi Sarah
Thanks for your compliments about my mum – I so wish she had a computer so she could read all the nice things for herself – I do tell her about them!
Yes I am the one front left doing the splits – the girl standing top right is Irene. She was the reason I got the job on the ship as I worked with her in Jersey for a summer season, and she recommended me to be one of ‘Les Darling Girls’ ( the name of the dance troupe ).
Very close with 1979 but it was earlier.
Sophie’s band is called 4FLAVA and I will post a link in my next blog.

    Hi Julia,
Well you certainly can, can can lol – I think this is 1975/1976 ?? Your mum looks amazing fora young gal in her seventies glad you had a ball on holiday. I too like my christmas tree traditional basically red and gold but not themed or fancy pants. A quick tale, my friend when we went to buy the tree, well, I said to this chap, innocently enough(honest) he was holding the tallest christmas tree i ever saw, “You got a big one” !! My friend went into fits of laughter as did this chap, who was at least 6’4″ and he replied, does this tree look 6’to you? It was at least 7′ tall and as wide how he got it home goodness knows but i’m still smiling at the guys face. Merry Christmas, Angie xxx

Hope that you are your lovely family have a happy and peaceful year aheard (lots of fun too). Take care,Irene.

    Hi Angie
Only just spotted your post – you are spot on with the date of the photo – I was on the ship from Nov ’75 – April ’76 ……… clever girl!! Not so accurate with my Mum’s age though, she is ’83’!!!! – she’ll be thrilled to bits with the error.
Loved the innocent tale of your Christmas tree shopping ?!?! We took all our decorations down yesterday ( 6th ) – I’m a bit of a traditionalist with that too – and everywhere looks bare as it always does for a while after they come down.
Hope you enjoyed your Christmas and Happy New Year

    Hello Irene
Yes I am trying to make a decision on a new hairstyle – have definitely decided to go a bit shorter BUT how much and what style?? …….. watch this space!
I really do feel like I’m talking to all you guys at home – let’s face it, if you weren’t there, I’d be talking to myself!!!!
Thanks for the good wishes for my family – a Very Happy New Year to you too!

    Hello Winona
The photo of Mum is taken near Javea in the Northern Costa Blanca. I think K TAL will be much more use to her than ‘entrada de camiones’ don’t you??
The purple eyeshadow I am currently using is a YSL compact – gorgeous isn’t it?
Happy New Year to you too!
