Hockey, walks and ice cream in Scotland

Kathy Tayler in a field of wild flowers Hi Guys,

I was sorry to be away last week as I missed our annual Christmas in July event, but I was busy enjoying summer in Scotland instead!

I was there to be proud mum and cheer on my son Charlie, who was competing for England in the Under 16 Home Nations hockey tournament.

Scottish hospitality
We had a marvellous time, staying in the quaint seaside town of Largs, on the west coast. We found a wonderful place called the Woodhouse Hotel, whose owners Willie and Lilian made us feel like old friends.

We were very well looked after, with amazing Scottish breakfasts that made the very thought of lunch redundant, and hospitality in the bar until the end of the day (or even the start of the next!).

Kathy and family overlooking the Isle of Arran Breathtaking views
We had the morning free to roam before heading to the National Sports Centre for Charlie's matches, and we took a ferry to Great Cumbrae island, where Barney the dog ran and ran on the beach at Millport, and we climbed through spectacular fields of wild flowers to the top of the ridge that overlooks Largs, to enjoy the most amazing views across to the Isle of Arran, the Mull of Kintyre and beyond.

Brilliant for blowing away the cobwebs caused by theBarney the dog night before!

And for even more indulgence, we tasted surely the best ice cream in the world which is served in the art noveau style Nardini's cafe on the sea front.

Charlie and Kathy Cheering on Charlie
The hockey was good, too. Charlie's team won every game for a grand slam and a gold medal. Charlie has earned three caps for his national team, and that can be a little nugget of pride and self-confidence that he can carry within him for years to come. I'm so proud of him as he has worked so hard, along with taking his GCSEs as well, and deserves all his success.

The medal he was awarded wasn't the biggest, as you can see from the photo, but it will certainly be well looked after!

Picking up bargains in the QVC Sale
Then it was back to the excitement of our Great Summer Sale here at QVC. I hope you found a few bargains – I bought three pieces of fashion, a cook's essentials blender, and a Northern Nights feather bed and pillow for Bex to take to uni when she heads off in September. Happy days!

Take care,

Kathy xx

    Hi Cathie!
I always enjoy reading your blogs and, in particular, this week’s! I actually LIVE in Largs and regularly go for Lunch at the weekend to ‘Woodies’!
Although the weather in Largs has been a bit showery over the past few days, on the whole, the West coast of Scotland has enjoyed a much better Summer, so far, than you poor souls in the South!!
The views ARE spectacular from the hills behind Largs and I often take my grand-daughters for long walks – next time you visit Largs, make a point of going to the Greto Falls!
Well done to your son – he obviously takes after his Mum!
    Best Wishes

Kathy, the best ice cream in the world can be found at the Ritz Cafe at Millport. Millport is a beautiful, peaceful island and I go there often. I’m so glad you enjoyed being in my part of the world.

    Hi Kathy
I just read your blog and realised we had more than qvc in common. I was in Largs for the same reason my son was playing for the Irish under 16 team although they didnt fare aswell as your guys it was a great week for them all and we really enjoyed the experience. I did notice your lovely dog but did not pay attention to the owner , typical.

Hi Kathy. Glad you had a nice break, but lovely to see you back! May I ask a personal question? Yesterday, on the TIGNANELLO hour, you had some lovely wide-leg black trousers on. Were they from QVC? You looked lovely in them. I also want to wish Bex all the best,I know it’s a very stressful time.Happy belated birthday, and I hope you all have a great day;and the weather holds out,so they can all stay in the garden!!Best wishes, Jill

To all you lovely people who have commented above, so sorry for my rudeness by not replying sooner, but you’ll see from my recent blog that I’ve been away on my summer holiday and blissfully unable to access the internet! Anyway, I’m back now and will answer any questions you have asked. Thanks for taking the trouble to comment.

    Hi Jeannie, Jules and Joyce
How lucky you are to live in such a beatiful part of the world. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Largs and exploring around, and while we were there it made my husband Olley and I decide to spend a little longer – maybe a touring holiday or hire a motorhome – and discover so much more of the west coast of Scotland. Maybe next summer?
    I’ll let you know!
    Take care

    Hi Jean
I spoke to several of the Irish team parents at the matches, and also met a couple having a pizza in town, but obviously not you. Never mond – hopefully next time.
If you see our dog Barney again, you’ll know I’m close by, so come and say hello!
I think we all enjoyed the few days in Largs, and the boys were all fantastic, win or lose.
Best wishes, to you and your family

    Hi Jill
I’m glad you like the trousers – we have similar wide leg styles in a stretch jersey in our Michelle Hope, Nina Leonard and Attitudes by Renee ranges that I also wear.
And thanks for your best wishes for Bex – I’m delighted to say she got her 3 A grades and will be off to read Medicine next month. She – and we – are delighted. And to cap it all, the sun shone and we had 80 remarkably well-behaved 18 year olds in our garden for a successful results/birthday party. What a week!
I hope all is well with you and yours.
    Take care
