Valentine's

Hearts and Flowers

21

Do you remember a few weeks ago, when Chris and I celebrated our 38th anniversary, we bought each other the same card? Well, it almost happened again on Valentine’s Day! I had deliberately made the effort to go to Windsor, rather than shopping locally, and yet on Sunday morning the two envelopes lying next to each other on the table were exactly the same size and the same colour! It seems we have different perceptions of each others preferred tipple though. Chris loves red wine (I don’t mind it occasionally myself) but he sees me as a champagne girl!

That extends to taste-buds as he had bought me chocolates and I got him heart-shaped cheeses, although we both enjoyed the heart-shaped chocolate cake I had hastily thrown together late on Saturday evening. At least there was a lovely smell emanating from the kitchen while I watched my team, Crystal Palace, being beaten again on Match of the Day. We have a a big cup tie this weekend against Spurs, who are bang on form, so I’m guessing it will be our exit from the FA cup for another year…. although you never know, league and cup are two different animals.

tulips

I was also the recipient of a pretty bunch of pink roses and red tulips… well they were pretty until Wilfie and Milo started ‘playing’ with them. For some reason, they were both eating the tulip leaves so I had to cut them off. This on the back of managing to break one of their scratching posts last week. I don’t think we are going to have the same problem with the new post – it’s called Fat Boy and it’s very, very sturdy so I don’t think they will break that… I’ll keep you posted!!!(Just my little joke).

There were a couple of other reasons for going to Windsor on Saturday. Sophie wanted to treat herself to a new handbag in celebration of starting her new job (and also to be able to fit her computer into) and I had run out of Aveda leave-in conditioner. When I go to the Aveda salon in High Holborn I often have my lunch there and it is usually the same thing – Avocado and White Bean Tartine. My trip to Aveda in Windsor inspired me to have a go at recreating it for lunch on Valentine’s Day.

It was yummy so I thought I’d share the recipe:

Ingredients

4 slices rye bread
1 avocado
Half a tub of lemon & coriander houmus
2 spring onions (thinly sliced)
2 radishes (thinly sliced)
Half a tin of white cannellini beans (drained)
1 dessertspoon mixed seeds
Juice of half a lemon
Sea salt
A few chilli flakes

– Mash the avocado with sea salt, chilli flakes to taste and a few drops of the lemon juice. Spread on the rye bread.
– Mix the houmus with a few drops of lemon until it’s a thick pouring consistency. Drizzle over the avocado. Scatter the rest of the dry ingredients on top and finish with the remaining lemon juice.

It really was very very tasty – let me know what you think if you give it a go.

So to this week’s Fashion Focus. To coincide with London Fashion Week we have a five-day fashion event from today until Tuesday. There will be Runway shows at 8pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday, plus other fashion hours and two full days of fashion on Monday and Tuesday. When I met with the buyer we selected some styles that will be featuring from different designers and we’ve put them into a little slide show for you.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

There are some great new season outerwear pieces from Helen Berman featuring in the Runway show tonight including the sleeveless coat, which apparently is a hot trend in New York at the moment and the biker style jacket. Hopefully there will still be some Coco Bianco pieces available for tomorrow’s Runway show after a madly busy ‘Fashion on Friday’ last week. Also look out for the gorgeous jacket from Join which I predict will sell out very quickly. On Sunday’s show, H by Halston are back, along with Marla Wynne and Onjenu.

Also look out for the first Birkenstock show of the season on Tuesday at 10am – summer must be on its way. I’m always saying how much I love two particular styles Burma, 143608 and the EVA flip flops 139082. Just in case you thought I was exaggerating here is my stash…. so far!! Check out our website for a fuller run-down of shows and also styling tips.

I also want to draw attention to my Modalu London handbag show on Wednesday at 5pm. if you’re not all fashioned out by then…. as if!

Tonight’s Fashion on Friday is Vitaform footwear followed by the penultimate Spotlight on Jewellery of this series. Lola Rose is the featured brand, along with Love Rocks, Links of London and Eternal. Look out for a brand new watch range featuring on the final show – more on here next week.

I have some great shows this coming week, which I shall list below, but I’m particularly looking forward to Sunday morning at 11am when I’ll be with Caroline Archer for an hour of Liz Earle featuring a beautiful TSV – perfect with Mother’s Day only a couple of weeks away. I think it is one of my favourite LE TSV’s ever – there is not one but two Cleanse and Polishes – original and a limited edition Rose and Cedrat, Instant Boost skin Tonic (my all time fave LE product), your choice of Skin Repair, Orange Flower Botanical Body Wash (I’m currently using this in the shower) the best handwash ever (in my humble opinion) and hand repair hand cream. Can I also just mention that I’ve fallen totally in love with Botanical Essence no. 20 - if you have too I would recommend ordering early – 209925 – as it usually flies out.

Just to finish on a funny… Sophie and I finally got round to making up the T Rex model she brought me back from a recent trip to her brother’s. There is a shared joke between Sophie, Me and Rox (a QVC colleague who Sophie worked alongside and has remained friends with) and as it was Rox’s birthday on Valentine’s Day, it had to be done. All I once said was that I had short arms!!!!

      Hi Julie
So pleased to hear you managed to get the Coco Bianco dress – great for us girls with short arms too!
The hours I’m putting on my blog each week are only a guideline – there have been quite a few last minute changes this week, including Modalu moving from today at 5pm to the Fashion on Friday slot. I’ll keep doing it though
      Love

      Hi Julia,
Me again- I don’t know what’s wrong when I try and post comments it says there’s a fault. Then when I delete half of what I’ve written it goes through?!!
Max Boyce is in his 70’s now and doing well after a triple heart bypass. I won’t write any longer in case it doesn’t go through again.
      Best wishes, Tina

        Hi Tina
I will mention to the blog administration team that you are having problems posting – a few other people have also mentioned this.
Did you treat yourself to anything in the fashion event? So much new season fashion, you were almost spoilt for choice. Mind you, check out the Fashion Outlet shows for good prices as we have to make way for the new, so bargains to be had.
Good on Max Boyce for keeping going – people in the entertainment industry never seem to retire!
        Speak soon

Hi Julia my black cat Shadow loves his scratchy pole too, as well as my carpet and other things for sharpening his claws on. I recently bought him a coir doormat which I have put next to his scratchy pole and he also loves to do his claws on that too.The funny thing is it had pictures of black cats all over it so I couldnt resist getting it as it seemed to be made especially for him. Shadow is only 3 years old but I am sure he is definitely psychic. I have a chronic illness that makes me disabled and very often have good and bad days with it. And whenever I am having a bad day somehow Shadow always seems to know. Its on those days that he never leaves my side and smothers me with affection. Whereas on my good days I hardly see him at all as he spends his time outside climbing trees and hunting in the fields being a usual cat. I also have an elderly Border Collie who he loves to bits as well. Since having Shadow our lives have completely changed ( for the better ofcourse). And it now involves my son having to get up in the early hours of the morning having to chase and rescue escaped mice running around my bungalow that Shadow has brought home or escaped birds flying about all over. I now have a big sign outside my front door with a squirrel holding a handful of nuts on it. Which says Welcome To The Nut House Where Being A Nut Is Essential. Because since having my Shadow in my life thats exactly what my home has now become. But I would never be without him nor want my home to be any other way now. I love reading your blogs Julia as they always make me smile and are so interesting to. You take care with all my love from Becca, Sky and my beautiful Shadow xxx

Hi Julia my little black cat Shadow loves his scratchy pole too. As well as a few other things like my carpet for doing his claws on. I recently bought him a coir doormat which is next to his scratchy pole and he loves using that for his claws as well. It is covered with pictures of black cats so I couldnt resist getting it as it seemed to have been made especially for him. Shadow is only 3 years old so is still very young and obviously is still learning about things all the time. I woke up recently to find him doing what I call pattercake on my nose. I think the proper expression used for it is kneading. But I always call it pattercake. And very often I wake up to find I have a cats bottom in my face instead of the other end. But he will learn eventually I guess. I honestly do believe that Shadow is psychic though Julia. I suffer with a chronic disease that makes me disabled. And often have good and bad days with it. Whenever I am having a bad day Shadow always seems to know and remains by my side constantly showering me with never ending affection. Whereas on my good days I hardly see him at all as he spends his time outside climbing trees and hunting in the fields being a usual cat. I also have an elderly Border Collie who he loves to bits as well. Since having Shadow our lives have changed so much (for the better ofcourse). And theres never a dull moment in our home anymore. It now involves my son having to get up in the early hours of the morning having to chase and rescue escaped mice running around my bungalow that Shadow has brought home or escaped birds flying about all over. Hi Becca
Shadow sounds quite a lot like Wilfie although I would never let Wilfie ‘ponch’ or knead my nose as he is a house cat so has very sharp claws. He loves to climb up me and sit across my shoulders but if he hasn’t had a recent pedicure he scratches like mad – I have the scars as proof!
I know what you mean about an intuitive cat. We used to have an old black and white cat called Dylan. He knew if I was unhappy or poorly and would just sit with me. Broke my heart when he died although he damage it to 23 which is such a good age.
Our Poppy is coming up to 21 in June. I would love to have a dog but I don’t think she would like it so we will respect that it’s her home and wait.
I remember the little ‘gifts’ previous outdoor cats have brought in! Very generous of them but I’d rather do without if you know what I mean.
I wish you well in managing your health condition
      Love to Sky & Shadow

Nice to hear you visited Windsor, my most favouite place. Living in NW for some years but visit Windsor whenever visiting family who all live around the Oxford area. Looking forward to Liz Earl – the hand wash/cream totally cleared a v nasty skin complaint on hands. Thank u Liz Earl.

      Hi Irene
Windsor is my nearest decent sized town – I really like it although I have yet to have a look around the castle. I popped in to Waterstone’s while I was there and they are going to stock my books which I’m very excited about. They may even realise a book signing for me in May for the next one.
I hope you got the Liz Earle TSV – I LOVE the hand wash and of course Instant Boost Skin Tonic.

    Hi Julia,
Gosh that is strange about the cards again, being so similar.
Let’s hope the scratching post last’s. That is Milo sizing it up isn’t it, would love to no what he is thinking, it looks like like he is thinking that is pretty high but one big leap and I am at the top. Cat’s are so funny, you never no what they are going to get up to next. Marmaduke that I had to have put to sleep recently use to hide just inside my office, waiting for Jay the Collie to appear and then he would dive at him.

You got lots of writing done. That is a lot of words.

Birkenstock, I have the Burma ones, in that gorgeous pink. That is a style that I like.

Yes some good shows coming on, hope to watch some of them.

    Love Jean xx

      Hello Jean
The scratching post is attracting a lot of activity from both of the cats (Poppy doesn’t do scratching posts) and so far it’s still standing. It’s very sturdy so I think we should be ok – yes, that is Milo, cute isn’t he?
I had a really good day of writing yesterday on my day off – 3000 words & a few tweaks to earlier chapters. Almost half way now so still hoping to make my May publication deadline.
Love my Birki’s just need some warm weather to enjoy them now.

    Yummy recipe, thank you.
Another one for the veggie cookbook ! :)
The new scratching post looks good, hopefully your cats won’t destroy that one too quickly. My 2 cats still prefer my new stair carpet to their post…bless them!?!

    Hi Julia
Indeed I did try the recipe. I often have mashed avocado on toast, so it was nice to try a variation. I’m not keen on rye bread, but my seeded wholemeal worked nicely with it. Thanks again for the recipe, definitely will have it again.
