Health and fitness tips from the experts

So January and the new year are both well and truly underway, as is our #QVCWellbeing month!

Whether you’re just looking to ease off on the heavy food after the Christmas feasting or looking to make some serious lifestyle changes, we’re all in it together – we want to hear from you, and we want to help you!

Our new Fitness & Wellbeing page has everything you may need to get you started – from blenders and juicers for those looking to get their five a day, to treadmills, exercise bikes and more, if you’re thinking about getting in some extra exercise at home.

And, because it’s not always about a big lifestyle overhaul, but sometimes just a small thing here and there – we asked some of our top QVC health and fitness experts for one change they would recommend you make for optimum health this year…

Kick start with a cleanse

Sugar for me is one of the top toxins to give up and a 10 day cleanse is the perfect time to get rid of sugar addiction. Excess glucose is converted to triglycerides that is then stored as fat and accumulate in the blood where they react with the body’s proteins and cause glycation – a damaging reaction that causes chronic inflammation. One of the protein molecules that is damaged by sugar is collagen, which is key in keeping the skin looking young. Glycation also produces free radicals and contributes to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques and therefore heart disease. So giving up sugar is the best health and beauty resolution!

Get on the move

Move more! By making simple changes such as walking to the shops, exercising during TV ad breaks and taking the stairs instead of the lift, you can make a big difference to the way your body looks and feels. Also, treat your body to a piece of exercise equipment that you can use for 10 minutes every day. The Everlast Home Gym Body Exerciser will work all of your muscles and is very simple to use. Remember, if you don’t use it, you lose it, so make 2016 your year to get strong and healthy!

Focus on the positive

In life I think you mustn’t be too hard on yourself – focus on all the lovely things you can have and not what you can’t! With weight loss I’m a big believer in setting yourself small achievable goals such as simply walking a few more steps every day. Slow and steady wins the race so just keep going, stay positive and enjoy the weight loss journey!Corinne Carlise1

A little can go a long way

ginger-shotStart your day with a power shot! They say good things come in small packages, and this is one of the cases where that saying holds some weight. There is an array of super juice shots that you can have that pack an enormous amount of nutrition into a single shot!

I tend to start my day with a ginger shot:

  • 1⁄2 large apple (or 1 small apple) and 5cm chunk of ginger
  • Blend in your juicer, pour into a small shot glass and down in one

It’s naturally anti-viral, antibiotic, anti-fungal, anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic, plus it helps increase blood flow, promotes sweating and relaxes peripheral blood vessels.

Try a new workout

Every day through repetitive incorrect movement, bad posture and shoes we risk hurting our backs. To help combat this, you can use a Pilates Reformer and take five minutes to do these simple exercises every day:
  • Warm-up footwork in each position to correct pelvic alignment
  • Do the Elephant pose (keep both feet on the reformer and bend your body over in a ‘V’ shape – don’t bend your legs – with your hands on the bar) to stretch your hamstrings and release the lower back
  • Do the Eve’s lunge (a lunge with your front foot on the floor and your other on the reformer) to stretch Piriformis and Psoas

From the inside out

Take MSM (the ‘beauty mineral’) daily… it is a nutritional form of sulphur, which is an essential component in the formation of collagen, elastin, cartilage and keratin, perfect for giving mineralised hair and sumptuous skin with the added bonus of being a building block for healthy bones and joints. So you don’t even have to think about it, you can get a convenient daily strip from Inner Me that contains an MSM, Omega 3 and Hyaluronic Acid complex together with three other key supplements for women in their 50s and beyond.Nikki Cooper1
