Have I found my mother-of-the-bride outfit?

Ali with Kathy at the 10th Anniversary party Well what a wonderful response to Lucy's news! Thank you so much for all your lovely comments and kind words – it's been a treat to read them, and to also share in some of your memories of your special day.

As with most plans, they are made to be changed, and not only have they changed their choice of venue, but they have opted for October as THE month to be married in! Cripes – only 11 months away!

She and Richard are completely set on this beautiful collection of stone barns and cottages to house us all, and set the scene for the ceremony. That's, of course, the lovely thing about being able to be married anywhere really isn't it?

Lucy, her friend Mel and I all head off to Cornwall for a taster weekend in December, and I can't wait! We get to sample the selection of Cornish delights from the menu, explore the beautiful buildings and bounce on the beds – enough said!! I've had a look at it online and I know EXACTLY why they've chosen it, so will take a few snapshots to share with you – if allowed! :)

Before that though, we've got the engagement party, which will be in a little village hall close to us here. Lucy and I are in control of the catering, and Richard's band is providing the music, so a good time should be had by all :) Not sure how many are coming as yet, so can't count out the cocktail sticks for the cheese and pineapple, but will be better prepared nearer the time!!

Celebrating 10 years at QVC!

Ali with Colin and Kathy One thing I won't have to worry about though is what to wear, as I had to choose something appropriate to celebrate my 10 years with QVC last week, and I think it'll be perfect!

I still can't quite believe that I've worked here for that long, or that Kathy Tayler – who joined just a week before me in the year 2000 – still copes with sharing a dressing room with me! :) I think she's got used to my rinsed-out tights draped over the air conditioning vents, but must get rather tired of my tatty toothbrush adorning the sink :)

We both got our invitations to the very smart Mayfair Hotel in town, and as she'd worked that day, Colin and I met her and her husband Olley at QVC Towers. We could have taken a taxi but Olley very kindly offered to drive us there, and then had the nightmare of finding a parking space! Kathy and I left the boys to it as we wafted into the fabulous foyer and were then waved in the general direction of the DO…

Ali, Kathy and other QVC girlies Sadly neither Kathy nor I quite got the gist of the gesture, and ended up peering into a number of small rooms set out for meetings and not merriment! Laughing quietly at our ineptitude, we finally spotted a couple of other people we knew and were suddenly being plyed with pink champagne and posing for photographs :)

The boys arrived not long after that, and we spent a really lovely evening with all those others, who like us, have been a part of QVC for 10 years. As Kathy had to work the next morning, she and Olley headed off, which meant that Colin and I would have needed a taxi were it not for the kindness of Wendy (floor manager extraordinaire) and her man Andrew, who offered us a lift.

Now, can I just say that the Mini is designed for comfort, speed and style, but NOT for cramming three somewhat jolly women and two grown men into! Colin's knees were up by his ears, which was difficult as I was meant to have been sitting on his lap, and my skintight satin dress did not leave much room for manouevre, but suffice to say we got there in one piece, and I now know Wendy a great deal better than I did before! :)

Back with a houseful…

Luckily I wasn't too 'tired' on Friday as poor old Sam came home from University running a temperature and generally feeling very rough. We got him a doctor's appointment, and the doctor has advised us that he has Glandular Fever poor soul. He will need to stay  home for at least another week or so, and because it's viral there is no treatment. You've just got to see it through.

We think it may have begun with the dreadful throat just prior to him going to Uni as he's not really been well since then, but obviously it's a great worry for him re. work, although I've spoken with the Uni and they are very supportive. His girlfriend's with us too at present as she's lost her flat so I'm happily planning meals and washing and ironing for England :) So good to have a houseful again…

Must dash but hope you like the photos and are having a good week. Let me know if you think the dress would be right for the party.

Love Ali xxx

    Hi Ali,
What a fun-filled week you’ve had! How exciting with all the weding planning, but I feel awful for poor Sam. I very much sympathise. And with the worry too. Health always comes first in my book though! You & Kathy looked lovely & yes the dress is very apt for the sparkly engagement party!
Have a good week with your house full!

Hello Alison, you look stunning, as always, and it looks a perfect party dress. Never one to moan about buying anything, I can’t believe women who say they hate shopping for clothes, I already have my MOTB outfit for next July. I also saw a glorious black poppy fascinator at a Wedding Fayre. It was the size of a frisbee and was £200… so a considered purchase. Working on Glenn Campbell’s ’50p a wear’ idea I’d have to be seen in it at every outing well into my dotage and probably wear it while doing the housework to get value for money. I was sensible and walked away which is just as well, as last week I went with younger Daughter to Bridgnorth, found a super shop and had one made for far less. Enjoy your party planning and I hope Sam gets better soon, he must feel that the rug of life just keeps being pulled from under him at present, here’s to better times! Love from Jo in Stourbridge.

    Hi Alison!
Congratulations to Lucy and Richard. You are right – time does fly!! Strangely, we have just come back from the same spa you described in the last blog – I took John for HIS birthday – isn’t it fabulous? Another trip must be planned I think!
Hope Sam is recovering and soon gets back to Uni!

Susan, you’re right, good health is so important, but I’m happy to report that Sam is slowly improving, and although desperately tired all the time he feels slightly better in himself. Yes I loved Kathy’s dress, and ironically I nearly bought one in the same colour with similar beading on it! Hope all well with you and yours, love Ali x

Hello Jo, and thanks for writing. How exciting that you already have your MOTB outfit, and you did make me laugh with your ‘considered purchase’….wise advice from Glen Campbell though, and great that you managed to save the pennies and get a custom made fascinator for a lot less! I bet I know the shop in Bridgnorth. I used to visit there a fair bit while living in Shropshire and it’s got some fab shops. I’ve passed on your kind words to Sam and he’s feeling a little better each day. Love Ali xx

Rhona how lovely you are! Thanks for all your kind words, and it seems as though the dress may well be the one for the night….. Won’t be able to eat too many sausage rolls while wearing it though! We were hoping to have a few fireworks tonight but the weather’s so awful that bangers and mash will be indoors tonight! I’ll look forward to hearing from you, and love to you and yours, Ali xx

Hello Janet, so glad you like the dress – I was lucky as it was one of the first I tried on! You’re right about Cornwall being magical… I think it’s going to be a truly magical wedding too! Sam getting a little better each day, and although I want him healthy again, it is good to have him home. So glad you’re going to be able to visit your son soon, and make sure you get a couple of hugs while you’re with him – then it’ll be Christmas and he’ll be home for a while anyway. Do hope all well with you, Love Ali xx

I shall wait with bated breath to hear about your ‘knicker incident’, but do take care of yourself won’t you. Love Ali xx

    Hi Ali,
I was thinking the other day about the Apprentice as I love it & I was thinking if my memory is right weren’t you on it last year?! They had to do a sales pitch on QVC did they not? I my be wrong but thought I’d ask.
Hope Sam is getting stronger every day still. It is an awful awful illess to cope with.
    Take care,
    Susan x

Susan, I love it too!! Yes, you’re right, I was on the “You’re Fired” show which follows The Apprentice, the year before last, and Adrian Chiles presented it then. It was following the hilarious sale of the trampoline….!! Need I say more. I would have loved to hear Darah O’Breen’s critique of that! Sam’s feeling a great deal better now, and thank you for asking – it is such a debilitating illness, and has really knocked him for six. We’re hoping though, he’ll be well enough by Monday to go back to Uni, fingers crossed. Hope all well with you, and thanks for writing, love Ali xx

That’s right Ali! I remember now! That was hilarious!! I do love it & I think Dara O’Braian has settled into it really well. One of our funny Irish men! I am glad Sam is a bit better & I can believe it really did knock him for six. Tell him to take it easy for a while yet though! Have a nice weekend & wrap up! It’s proper winter!

Susan, most definitely one of the funnier Irish men around – he hosted a cable and satellite awards dinner a few years back, where QVC won, and was extremely witty then! Sam has gone back to uni, but struggling a little. Not sure if he really wants to be there now Oh dear…. Hope you’ve got your vest on! It’s freezing here too.
    Love Ali xx
