Halloween and Bonfire Night Delights

1

Crunchy copper and gold leaves, crisp, fresh mornings and longer, darker evenings, which call for staying cosy indoors, even if you’re sad to see the end of summer, autumn has its fair share of beauty too, and with Halloween and Bonfire Night, there’s plenty to look forward too.

Autumn to us, always feels like one of the best seasons to get creative in the kitchen and while the weather may not be great, it gives us an excellent excuse to warm up with a hot drink and tasty treat or two, plus there a whole range of seasonal produce to discover and experiment with.

A tried and tested family favourite has to be Toad in the Hole which can be given an interesting twist by using different flavoured sausages and gravy. Pies and pastries always spring to mind when thinking of autumn and an evening meal of deliciously filled, handmade savoury pies will tempt your tastebuds, while a sweet, fruit pie makes the perfect indulgent finishing touch to any meal, especially when served with lashings of hot custard.

It’s not all about the winter warmers though; autumn is the perfect time for treats, whether it’s toffee around a bonfire, or sweets and chocolates for Trick or Treaters, there’s plenty of excuses to get creative in the kitchen, whatever your level of culinary expertise. Calico Cottage have made creating mouth-watering flavoured fudge so easy with their complete, step-by-step kits and decorating biscuits or shortbread to look like cats, ghosts or pumpkins with children or grandchildren is fun and fuss-free too. We had a go too!

Another popular Halloween tradition is to carve lanterns from pumpkins and these knives from Kuhn Rikon will definitely do the trick. Here are a few of our efforts! Why not keep the insides to add a delicious twist to a risotto or vegetable soup?
