OK, having returned from Vegas with my highlights slightly more blonde than when I left, it was time to do something about the barnet! The Richard Ward salon in Sloane Square has a really talented colourist called Sarah and she told me she'd been thinking about my hair. Instead of having an auburn base, how about going darker brown, but highlighting with red? Really red?
Now there was a time many years ago on QVC, when I was also recording a BBC game show called 'Meet the Challenge'. I was the host, and people like Harry Greene, bless him, were on there as experts. It was kind of a 'Generation Game meets Changing Rooms' and two members of the public competed against each other to do the tasks best, and the winner won a (very small!) prize. When I say very small, one of them was 'a tablecloth and napkin set!' Seriously!
They had a budget of £50 per prize per show, and the props lady took herself off to a very expensive Regent Street department store to buy them!
Anyway, just before the show, I was sent to a very famous hair stylist in London. His wife was put in charge of my colour. Her hair was a burgundy shade and I was going to have a trendy (back then!) slice of colour on the top.
'Not quite as red as yours', I told her. Well she must have heard 'twice as red as yours'!
I came out like a rooster! Alison Young's comment said it all when I went in to work
'That's not permanent is it?!'
Thank goodness for Aveda pigment conditioner which we were selling that night – it took it down from a rooster red to a more acceptable coppery colour!
So I've been reluctant to be daring ever since! But Sarah had done right be me so far, so I put my faith in her and she produced a look which has got more great comments than any other style I've ever had – well, since I went blonde in my 20's anyway!
What do you think? Has your hair changed many times over the years? What colour do you like the best?
Whatever colour it is now, at least we've got some absolutely fabulous hair products to make the best of it!!
