We live in an area where there are loads of trees and, whilst I love them in the summer, in the autumn the fallen leaves can be a real pain in the neck! I generally have to clean the gutters out in October, then again just before Christmas, and once more in the early New Year!
Now it's not difficult and it doesn't take long, but I always seem to forget (or get the timing wrong) and usually find out when I am woken up by water cascading over the edge of the gutter and splashing on the ground outside my bedroom window. This year was no different and by the time I did discover that my down pipe was blocked, I already had green algae growing all over the wall. Enough was enough!
Then, on a recent DIY show my special guest, the lovely John Davies, showed me the Rolson Pipe Filters & Gutter Mesh and it was a Shangri-La moment. The mesh covers the gutter (so the leaves don't get into the bottom) and the basket sphere stops anything getting down the pipe without obstructing the flow of the water.
It took but a few moments to fit and there was enough in one kit to cover all the problem areas of the house (some gutters just don't seem to accumulate the leaves like other areas). I can take the protection down in the summer easily if I like, but I think I will just leave it up permanently.
I hope I get the chance to show it again soon on my DIY projects show, so keep an eye out for it! Simon x
