For cheap and cheerful colour, there's little to beat annual cosmos with their lovely fern-like feathery leaves and masses of cheerful flowers all summer. Each plant will grow up to 2 feet high and nearly as much across so, to quote David Hawkins, "They really pay the rent"!
The other exciting news this week is that Greenfingers, the charity of the gardening industry, which creates magical gardens for children's hospices, has launched an amazing raffle for gardeners.
There is just one prize and it's every gardener's dream – over £6,000 of gardening goods including £1,000 of Thompson & Morgan vouchers, a £2,000 Hartley Botanic greenhouse, £750 of Bosch garden equipment (your choice), David Austin roses, Hillier plants, a top-of-the-range Beefeater barbecue, and more!
Tickets are on sale until early July at over 120 garden centres including Bridgemere, Sanders Garden World, Heighley Gate, Old Barn, World's End and all members of the Garden Centre group including Wyevale centres. Please do buy some. It's in aid of a great cause. There's a waiting list of hospices that need Greenfingers gardens and the sooner we can raise the money, the quicker we can help the hospices.
In other news this week, according to Amateur Gardening, researchers at Oxford University reckon that ivy-clad walls are a good thing, warming walls by up to 15% in winter and cooling them by up to 36% in summer. It helps make walls less prone to pollution and won't devalue homes either. So put away that weedkiller and learn to love your ivy!
