Welcome to lucky 13 everyone! Well thats how I'm looking at it. It is so important to keep a positive attitude, especially at this time of year! Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. The tree has been taken down and the decorations are packed away and it all feels like it was a long time ago, but I feel thankful because I had such a great Xmas Day. How did you spend yours?
I was working Christmas Eve and Boxing Day and, as I did last year, I volunteered to spend all of Christmas Day working with the Rotary Club at Battersea Park helping with their annual Christmas Day for our senior citizens, and what an amazing day it was.
Amazing, not just, because they provide a whole day that starts with a drinks reception followed by Christmas Carols with a choir (which I had to get up and sing with due to a low turn out of choir members), 3 course dinner, dancing, bingo, and tea for 400 guests, but most amazing because I genuinely get so much out of it.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped to make it a memorable day: Battersea Park Rotary Club, all my fellow volunteers including helpers, carers, cooks, bus drivers et al. You are all amazing. I would also like to thank my colleagues at QVC, Mike Tremain and Charlotte Ager for organising some gifts for me to bring along on the day so they could be given out as bingo prizes etc.
It is true what they say, giving feels good, and what better time of the year to embrace the spirit of giving than at Christmas. That said, there are always those who need our help throughout the year. So I am hoping that the spirit of giving and volunteering that made the UK shine so brightly last year with the London 2012 Olympics will remain alive and well in all of us, including me, this year and we remember to lend a helping hand where we can.
I wish you all a postive, prosperous and happy new year and would ask everyone to just take a moment every now and then during the year to remember that there are many people out there who need a helping hand. If you've never volunteered before I ask you to give it a go, what will amaze you is how helping someone else can give you so much more back than you ever think you are giving.
