Getting ready for my holiday in Crete

28

Ali and KianHere we are in September already – where did the summer go? NOWHERE!!! I hear you cry :) How glorious is this?! As promised our very own Indian Summer.

I fear I fall into that bracket of being a doubting Thomas, and on the strength of that I am jetting off to Crete with my dear friend Jo for a long weekend!

She hasn't had a holiday for three years, and so we plan to lay horizontal for five days soaking up the rays – well, with the occasional raising of a glass to our lips no doubt!

I'm so glad so many of you got to see Dr. Chris Steele and I on This Morning, and that my lovely editor set up the link here for those who had missed it. It was such a trip down memory lane for me…

I moved with the show to the London Studios, and it was great to be back there again. I bumped into Kian from Westlife (as was!) – he remembered me from when I talked to the band back in December 2010, and I was delighted to know that he was now a Dad- happy days :)

Ali and Lucy SpragganI also met Lucy Spraggan- the incredibly talented young singer who knocked The X Factor on its head the week before last, with her rendition of a song she'd composed called Last Night- me thinks big things are coming her way :) Such a lovely girl too, I will be voting for her!

Sitting on the sofa with Eamonn and Ruth was a treat, but kinda strange… I'm not used to someone else asking the questions, but they were both very sweet, and made it very easy for me.

I loved seeing the old recordings of when I presented the show, and although I thought it was 10 years since I'd last done it, in truth it's closer to 15!!

But the best thing about the day was that following the interview a viewer called in to say she had done a self examination, found a lump, seen her GP, been referred and was now awaiting surgery… Just one woman, but a mighty result…

The bench Ali foundColin took me out for a delicious celebratory lunch after the show, and then I was back into QVC that evening- and that's where I must be heading now as I'm with you at 3pm!

The house purchase is still going through, and I think it'll probably be the middle/end of October when we move… I am making the very best of the countryside around here and trying to run at least twice a week…

I came across this beautifully carved wooden bench on my travels last weekend – not sure who put it there, but isn't it lovely :)

Cinderella coachSomething else I wanted to share with you was this amazing glass (well probably plastic) Cinderella coach I saw parked outside a church in our local village!!! Sadly I couldn't stay to see Cinderella come out of the church…!!

You take care, and I will have photographic evidence of my incredibly lazy up and coming trip to Crete next time I write.

With love, Ali xxxx

    Hi Ali
Have a fab time in Crete, we all need a nice rest for a few days from time to time. Sorry I did not write for a while, I did not have a great summer, as it has been extra hot here and with the Tamoxifen side effect I had a very bad blood circulation in both legs, so could not set long to use the computer. But thank God it is getting better with the cool Air now.
I had my 6 month check up two days ago and all is ok.
On September 12 Iam going with two girlfriends on a cruise from here (Mallorca) for 7 nights and looking forward to it very much, I will be thinking of you hope you have a great time during your break.
Great news about Una, it is so good to hear that is fine, lots of love to all in Ali”s army, missed you all. Hi Alpa, Helen, Liz and Debs hope you are all good.
Ali take good care, and keep well, talk again soon.
    Magda.

Dear Alison, it was great to see you back on This Morning. You looked very calm and sophisticatd, though guess I am a little predjudiced. I wonder how many people will remember how well you coped on the dreadful morning of the Dunblane shootings?
You have come a long way since then. Its so good to know that now you can not only share your experiences with people but help them to realise that there is a life to look forward to again. Valueing the good days isn’t always easy but things do get easier as you and I both know.
So enjoy your break, don’t come back sunburnt! Looking forward to the fashion show and seeing your pics of it afterwrds.
Best wishes to all the people who write to you and who have become ‘holding hands’ friends.
    Love Mum xx

Morning..a well deserved break for you so go and soak up those rays! Ironically, it’s a fabulous bright sunny morning in Westgate and I am quickly writing this before I meet my sister at my mum’s house for our regular doggy walk on the beach. not quite like Crete but good ebough for the moment. I love it as I can breathe in the salty air and forget about last week and move on to the next. Was a bit of a shock getting back into the school routine but three days in and it feels like we never had a summer holiday at all. Looking forward to the photo’s to follow, have fun. Maryxx

    Hi Ali,
What a lovely blog. The photo of the beautiful bench really was lovely to see. I fo like things like that. Amazing how talented people are to create such things. Fabulous that you are running 2 or more times a week. So lovely to be outdoors isn’t it. I am glad you are getting away but a long weekend?! No no my dear that is a a week I’d say! Enjoy! Hard to keep up with all the hols at QVC! We’re in the wrong jobs!! How is Sam doing by the way? Hope you enjoyed the ceremony last night? I loved it. They must have focused on the ‘young’ I’d say with having Coldplay – just right given that they wanted to leave a legacy ie hopefully lots of young’ns really enjoyed the event!!
    ‘See’ you soon, take care,
    Susan x

    Hi there Ali
Have a wonderful time in Crete won’t you. Don’t blame you for not holding out for the Indian summer. Sisters have gotta do it for themselves and all that!!
Well, Ainzley had his 3 month check up at the vets on Friday. I would like to say that he behaved impeccably and all was calm and incident free, but if I did that I’d be lying!!
Firstly, he threw up in his carrier. As he hadn’t eaten for 13 hours it was just froth and spit which was very difficult to clean up in the confines of a moving car as it’s very sticky and stringy 9so sorry if you’re eating!!) When we got there we didn’t have to check in at reception as they just shouted “Ah there’s Ainzley. Take a seat” Neal and I slunk off to the furthest part of the waiting room being stared at by all. Everyone was very eager to see what was in our pet carrier to have caused such hilarity behind the reception desk!
The initial examination went ok with only one hiss and a very dirty look – from Ainzley that is, not the vet, who is a very nice, patient man!! Then came the sedation for his blood and liver test (as you know no one can touch Ainzley for anything as he gets very angry if he feels he’s going to be interfered with!!) I noticed that Ainzley didn’t seem to be relaxing after his sedation like he usually did but didn’t really give it much thought.
We called the vets a few hours later to see if we could fetch him home and the vet regaled us with the story that Ainzley had resisted the effects of his sedation and refused to lie down, struggled when he had to have blood taken, so much so that Ainzley had a big bruise on his neck as it took quite a few attempts to get the needle in!! He also threw up, bit 2 nurses and basically raised holy hell caused the vet in the next treatment room to come in and assist!! Our vet, luckily for us, quite likes Ainzley and thinks it’s all quite funny and admires his “spirit”!!
Thankfully, his bloods all came back OK and his liver readings were down to almost normal so I didn’t have to confess about the food thing!! However, bad news is that we have to get another urine sample as his glucose levels were quite high. The vet thinks that it was just because Ainzley was stressed (as were all concerned!!) but better to be safe than sorry!! So, we now have to go through the whole waiting for Ainzley to wee again!! Ah well, gives me something to do I suppose!!!
My life would be so boring without Ainzley!!
Magda, it was so lovely to hear from you. I’m sure you will enjoy your cruise and I hope this goes some way to make up for the summer months when you were not feeling well.
Alpa, I hope you are well and that things are sorting themselves out for you.
Love to all the other brave ladies in Ali’s Army.
    Lots of love and licks

    Dear Ali,
Hope you’ll have/having a great holiday with your friend in Crete. It’s really nice to go away for a short break with a friend from time-to-time – it’s something I really enjoy too.
I’m having my work cut out at the moment as I’ve just bought a tiny miniature Yorkshire terrier, we’ve called Lexi – she is sooooo gorgeous, but into everything LOL! We had our little Sophie for 16years, and after she died we thought we could never replace her, but we contacted the same breeder we had her from and she said she had one little girl left – so it was meant to be. She’s such a little character. The grand children adore her too – she’s like a little ray of sunshine.
Hope you’ll bring some good weather back with you. What a wash out this summer has been, but as I’m writing this the sun is shining (for once), so shouldn’t complain today at least.
    Take care,
    Love from Sue Radford xx

    Hi Ali and the army,
Hope you have had an extremely lazy holiday in the sun, Ali, doing absolutely nothing!! Best medicine going.
This is just a quick post from me to say that my ct scan showed nothing new so I’ve just had the bit of spread in my spine and hip, which is great news and a big relief. My treatment is staying the same as I am managing on a couple of painkillers a day. I go back for my next appointment with the oncologist in 3 months with an MRI scan to see how things are then – on condition I contact them if there are any problems before then.
Hope you are loving the cruise Magda – will email you soon. Great to hear from Una and to hear Ainzley’s adventures. Off to do nursemaid bit now as my other half isn’t well but no idea what it is. I’m not really nursemaid material so heaven help him!
Take care everyone and catch up in due course.

    Hi Ali
Sorry I have been AWOL for so long but it has been a very difficult year, having said that Ali and her army have always been in my thoughts and my following of the blogs. Great to hear of Ali and her progress and so proud of everything she has been through and accomplished. Watched This Morning and thought you were both beautiful and wonderful (as per usual).
I was so pleased to read that Una had been in touch as I felt we were going through a little bit of the same journey and then obviously felt hers had taken an awful turning and my heart went out to her.
We had been coping with our son home and luckily the boys being here loads. Unfortunately on Sunday (day of my early birthday bash. 11.09 I know no one can forget it, also my breast cancer time operation anniversay) we received devastating news. How do you write about these things? Anyway from Sunday the boys became permanent residence at what was their second home and Daddy has become their only next of kin.
Much love to Ali and the army (Una thinkin of you my love ).

Hi there Babs, not surprised you are proud of your grandaughter – what an achievement! I wish her all the luck for the future and hope that she thoroughly enjoyed her break in Corfu – one of my favourite Greek Islands. It seems as though that part of Europe have had extreme temperatures – like the 46% Colin and I had in Turkey! Actually my friend Jo and I were in Corfu four years ago for a short break, and we had a great time – as we did in Crete last week. Back tomorrow (Sunday) and then Monday evening, so hope to see you then. Thanks, as always for writing, and I should have another blog for you on Tuesday. Have a great week, with love, Ali xx

Magda! How lovely to hear from you, and to know that your check up was ok, although I was sorry to hear that you’ve been struggling with the heat and the Tamoxifen. I too am having a bit of a battle with side effects, but am trying different things to combat them :) You will already be away with your girlfriends on your cruise, so I very much hope you have a great time, as I did with Jo. Enjoy your well deserved break, and I look forward to hearing from you on your return. With love Ali xx

Aaaaaw thanks Mum! Yes I have to say that the Dunblane day was one of the most harrowing I have ever had to get through…. Jack at the time was exactly the same age as those poor little mites, and it was a very difficult day, but incredibly well handled… I too am looking forward to the Fashion Show, and am just sorry you won’t be there, although completely understand as you say, it’s not quite your thing! :) Not sunburned, but brown as a berry, after a lovely break. See you soon! Love me xxx

Mary, you’re very generous – some may feel three holidays in one year is more than enough!! :) I think the weather in England over the weekend we were away was ironically better than in Crete, but the sea was like bathwater, and we laughed like hyenas trying to stand upright in the surf – good times :) I am glad that you are managing to move on from last week, and know that as the weeks pass you will get more into the school routine, and hopefully things will ease with your mum. Photos hopefully up with new blog by Tuesday but working tomorrow and Monday, so up against it! Love to you and yours, Ali xx

Hi there Susan, so glad you liked the blog and the photos… I have to be honest and admit that when I first saw the bench I thought it had been dumped there, and was one of those foam rubber frame things!! I have since discovered a second bench on my run, so somebody somewhere is looking after us :) Yes it was more than a long weekend – 5 nights in total, and a great time – even though the weather was pretty cloudy, it was always warm, and with the wind off the sea we both tanned well. We missed the closing ceremony but saw the highlights – what a summer it’s been eh? Do hope all is good with you, love me xx

Hi there Elaine, and CONGRATULATIONS!!! What a gorgeous name Molly, and so poignant that it was your mum’s name also… how hard for you though to have lost your mum when she was so young just a year older than me…. I am sure there have been a lot of tears, but I am sure many of them in celebration of a new life :D
House is still going through, and yes it was good of mum to write, and we had a good old chin wag once I was home from Crete! love to you and your new addition, Ali xx

Crikey Debz sounds like you could do with a break, never mind me sitting about in the sun! Your brilliant accounts of Ainzley’s visits to the vets would make a fab story book – you should think of documenting them properly :) Your vet sounds like a star, and Ainzley has my complete sympathy when it comes to having blood taken – I hope his bruise gets better soon. Best of all, is that clearly your choice of diet is suiting him, and he’s doing well. Good luck with the wee sample! Thanks, as always, for writing, and love to you Neal and Ainzley, ali xxxx

Dear Sue, and welcome to Lexi!! Great name and sounds delightful although a little bit of a handful :) It must have been very hard for you when you lost Sophie – 16 years is such a long time, but I am very pleased that your new addition to the family is proving such a hit. Yes, my little holiday was much needed and very much appreciated – the weather was a tad changeable, but we still had a great time. September though in this country has almost made up for a wet August eh? I hope you will have enjoyed this weekend. With love as always, Ali xx

Oh Liz I am so relieved!! That’s great news about the scan, and even better that you are able to cope with it using just painkillers. Enjoy the day and put the MRI away for a while – in three months it will be Christmas so lots else to look forward to and plan for eh?! Yes I was as lazy as possible – basically a round trip to the beach, the bar, and then back to our sunloungers! – Oh and in the sea at least three times a day – bliss :) You take care, and do keep in touch, with love, Ali xx
