Get growing with Greenfingers’ Garden Re-Leaf Day

0

This weekend, the very best garden centres and nurseries in the UK are taking part in Garden Re-Leaf in aid of children and young people’s charity Greenfingers. There will be lots of fun fundraising events across the nation to help them build much-needed gardens for children’s hospices, with the official day on Friday 18th.

I’m absolutely delighted that, for the fourth year running, QVC are taking part too!

Children’s hospices do an incredible job supporting life-limited children and their families. The hospices receive very little state funding and they have to raise a staggering amount of money through fundraising every single year to simply keep going. They struggle to raise enough to pay for their staff, medicines, and the day-to-day running; so there’s very little left, if anything, for their gardens.

Yet, the gardens make a huge difference to the hospices. They often provide the only opportunity for the children to benefit from being outdoors, enjoy spending precious time in the fresh air, and relax with their family and friends.

One of the many Greenfingers gardens

Over the past few years, Greenfingers – although a very small charity – have built 50 gardens for children’s hospices around the UK.

Every one of their gardens is different and every one is special, be it:

– A garden for play; with pirates ships or wheelchair accessible tree house

– A garden for the senses; where the children can be stimulated by the touch, sight and smell of the plants

– A garden for the children to enjoy gardening; these can feature raised beds for planting, or they can be a quiet garden to offer a place for bereaved families to reflect and remember

Over the weekend QVC want to raise as much money as possible to help Greenfingers build more of their special gardens. All of the gardening suppliers are donating a minimum of £1 per item featured on the shows, and the plant suppliers are generously donating £1.50!

I’ve been lucky enough to be allowed to choose the plants with our buyers, so I’ve picked some of my all-time favourites including: de Jager Begonia Apricot Shades; Mont Rose giant flowered trailing fuchsiasPlants 2 Gardens lupins; and Thompson & Morgan bumper value oriental lilies.

Last year, QVC viewers helped us raise a staggering £52,000 from our Greenfingers Garden Re-Leaf shows and we were the biggest single fundraiser for the charity. This year, we hope to raise even more and we’ve got an even bigger selection of plants and products on offer.

Please do join us on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th from 9.00am, and help us to help even more children’s hospices.
