Gem expert Laurie Wickwire

Don't miss our fabulous Gems Boutique event all week from Monday 31st October! With a wealth of stunning gemstone jewellery to cast your eye over, we've asked one of our experts, Laurie Wickwire, to give you an insider's guide to all the sparkling stones on offer! Here's what she had to say…

"As Autumn approaches, I enjoy relaxing while reading the weekend papers. Regularly, in the business section (which for some bizarre reason is my favourite section of the paper) we constantly read how gold is a great investment as prices rocket and that diamond prices have soared over the past 12 and 24 months. But you know what?

I love jewellery because it is beautiful, amazing and magical (that it increases in monetary value is an added bonus!). I embrace jewellery because of the emotions I can attach to each and every piece I own. Also, I adore how jewellery is a gift that is given with love, respect and appreciation.

If you're thinking of buying or giving a diamond, you are entering an enchanted world of romance, intrigue, legend and history that was once reserved for kings. The reasons for purchasing diamonds are as different as the people who desire them. Through the years, diamonds have provided fulfilment for emotional and practical needs. They are sought after as gifts, status symbols, tokens of romance and even as investments.

Presenting the QVC jewellery shows are such a true treat for me. As a certified diamond grader, I grade and sort hundreds of diamonds each week. But after viewing loose diamonds 40 hours a week, something still happens each time I see a diamond set in a final piece of jewellery. I marvel at the creative designs on the market today, such fantasy settings and magical pieces.

I have so enjoyed working with QVC these last three years, increasing my range from Diamonds, to now include Premier Tanzanites and South Sea and Tahitian Pearls. We have a wonderful Tanzanite selection which the gem buyer has selected, airing in early November – what a show to watch!

Premier Tanzanite ringIf you are lucky enough to be one of the very few to purchase the very limited 10-carat Premier Tanzanite ring, well done you!

I love how you even receive a bouquet of flowers with the delivery of this enormous stone – how sweet indeed. I would love to hear from the individuals who purchase this ring, as I would really, really like to know how amazing you must feel when you are wearing this rare and enormous gem!

Not only am I fortunate to be hosting a Premier Tanzanite show this month, but really electrified about the Diamond Extravaganza scheduled for Saturday November 5th. I've already selected what to wear, and I'm not a clothes girl at all. Needless to say the outfit will have sequins. What a great job when you get to wear sequins to work!

Diamond flower wave ringHaving a peak at the pieces for the three-hour extravaganza, I have spotted many favourites but I will stand firm with just one. It is the Diamond flower wave ring which has a bit of a poinsettia flower feeling and is great for the upcoming Christmas season.

I hope you enjoy the jewellery!

Laurie x"
