"Game on" – that was what Chloe Everton tweeted six weeks ago when all the presenters were handed a tub, a bag of compost and ten lily bulbs. Michael Perry from Thompson & Morgan, who I affectionately call the 'gardening geek' after misreading his twitter name @gardening_greek, had set us a challenge to grow lilies. The best ones as judged by Michael will be named after the grower.
Chloe is very competitive and, within 24 hours, had a picture on twitter with her pot already planted up…crikey! I managed to get mine planted that weekend and then had to wait with bated breath for the the first sign of them two weeks later.
In the meantime my roomie, Anna Cookson, had a problem. She does have outdoor space where she lives but she didn't have any transport to take everything home so I suggested she plant them in our dressing room and then I could water them for her when she wasn't going to be in.
It seemed like a good idea at the time but after a few weeks and still no sign of shoots I volunteered to bring them home and be a surrogate mum to them. I am pleased to say they are now flourishing (pictured left), and although they are a little way behind most people's, I have assured Anna that it is not a race and not necessarily the biggest ones that will win.
I think the judging is at the end of July so I will let you know the winner then. Chloe's look huge, Ali Young is keeping quiet about hers, and so is Jilly Halliday. Jilly's Lilies – has a nice ring to it don't you think?
I have the lilies under the porch as apparently they don't like too much water so with the summer we are having so far I figured it would be best for me to manage how much water they get. I guess we should have expected rain this week as Wimbledon is underway…come on Andy!
They are being watched over by my meerkat solar light that I mentioned to you was a birthday present a couple of weeks back (see the picture at the top of this post)…hopefully he will scare any 'critters' away!
Talking of scaring critters, how weird is this? We have a fox that lives on the green opposite our house. A couple of evenings last week we watched the fox being chased across the green by a pair of crows! Have you ever seen that happen?
Today is Jewellery Day on QVC and I'm on at 2pm with Skagen watches so I must dash but not before I give you a heads-up on next Sunday. As well as my swimming gala it is Super Sunday on QVC. Can't say too much but the day will be packed with loads of your favourite brands at special prices!!!
Have a great weekend.
