From farm to fabulous…

Gale Hayman Lip LiftOne of the questions that I am asked most frequently is what my daily beauty routine involves. Well, you wouldn’t believe the routine I go through in the morning from working on the farm and mucking out my horse stables to looking fabulous and glamorous on TV! I’ll let you in on some of my secrets…

I’m usually running late in the mornings – either one of the horses has escaped into another field or one of the dogs is recovering from an operation.

My routine has to be very quick, as I don’t have hours and hours to get ready – but there is a big difference between how I look when I’m running around in jodhpurs and odd socks to how I look on the TV!

 The morning routine

Every morning before I muck out the horses I cleanse, tone and moisturise, and use my current favourite oils and serums, and I always put a factor 30 cream on my face without fail. Then while I’m making my cup of coffee, before I go out to the horses, I make sure I put on some Gale Hayman Lip Lift which I leave next to the kettle! This means that when I go outside my skin is already protected and I wear a baseball cap to protect my hair from the air and cold weather.

Mucking out the horses

L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand CollectionI am with the horses for anything from one hour to a couple of hours, depending on when I need to be in to the office. I make sure I have beauty products everywhere like in the tack room and in the horsebox!

My L’Occitane handwashes and L’Occitane shea butter handcreams, Bare Escentuals Buxom lipgloss and Gale Hayman lip lift are lying everywhere so I can grab them. I try to make sure that wherever I am there is a lip balm and a moisturiser to hand, as these are the two products you need to keep re-applying when you are out in the cold with the horses.

In the shower

Frederic Fekkai shampoo and conditionerAfter the horses are done I begin getting ready for work – this often involves eating a sandwich while having a shower which is an art form!

I begin with ABC Tea Tree Wash – I can’t live without it. This fantastic product gets rid of all dirt, grime and sweat from being outside with the horses. I then move onto one of my 'fashion' shower gels, usually a Liz Earle or L’Occitane one.

My current favourites that I’m using are the Frederic Fekkai Shea Butter Shampoo and Conditioner and Elemis Tranquil Touch Body Wash – these products have similar textures and smells, and work well together.

Hairfix Volume MousseAfter the shower I get dressed then dry my hair when my clothes are on. I’m currently using Hairfix Mousse and I blow dry my hair upside down with a Philip Kingsley brush for added volume.

Next, I put on a light dusting of make-up starting with a Mally Primer, followed by the new Liz Earle Skin Tint which has a great coverage while still being light on the skin. Then I finish off with a Mally powder on the top.

While driving…

Nail Envy duoI check on dogs and horses and lock up before I leave, so I have to make sure I wash my hands with L’Occitane Cherry Blossom Hand Wash then follow with a handcream.

Before I get in the car I put on Nail Envy which dries as I drive, and I also have my Michael diCesare Style Builders in my hair for the commute! I then stop in various villages on the way to put coats of polishes on. I’ve just started wearing the fabulous new Leighton Denny colours and my favourite is Supermauva. It has great coverage and a lovely finish, the iridescent lilac-mauve shade is different to any shade I’ve seen before.

When I arrive at work, I take my Style Builders out in the car park then add some lip gloss and I’m good to go!

So my secrets are all about the right products in the right places so they are there when you need them. And that is my routine to take me from farm to fabulous!

You always look fab Ali. And you’re so funny. That banter with Laura Gellar the other night ……. balm/bomb ……. “don’t say that at the airport” was hilarious. Laura’s always great fun isn’t she!
I use my Ultrasun Face 30 without fail now, hail, rain or shine! Everything else virtually is Elemis in my skincare routine. I used to dip in and out of some of your other salon ranges but I found that the ‘wow factor’ that only lasted temporarily with other brands just got better and better the more I used Elemis, so I stuck with it. I do love the Loccitane hand cream though.

Hi Ali – I’m in blog mode after seeing Claire’s sad and touching story about Mungo – I can only say you would have been one of her most understand allies at this time with your own love of dogs, horses and other animals, apart from beauty. Well back to your expertise, I have been mentored by you for years, am now 53 and have just lost my beloved cocker spaniel Arnie a week ago so an extremely bad week and loads of tears. Popping to the pub after falling apart when looking at Christmas cards from dogs, and starting to blub again, I was told by a complete stranger, she actually was pointing, at me, that I have no lines, great cheek bones and beautiful skin. My husband always says this, so after a really bad week, but lots of great skincare regimes from QVC bought with your expertise in mind, it must be working. Have a great Christmas and give Claire a hug (or a pup) to cheer her up x x Jen

Alison I love mallys make up – I’ve got a very oily t zone and her stuff is the only one that stays put for any length of time – I currenly use her loose powder (although I know she says she hates powder its the only I can describe it!) but interested in the clear gel stuff that was on the other day, what would be best, do they do the same job?
