This stunning range of dresses from designer Mena Ryan are real favourites with celebrities and their new collection showcases more of what they do best – gorgeous prints, flattering shapes and on-trend style.
We caught up with Mena to check out their Autumn Look Book and find out what the new season has in store…
What trends do you love for this season ?
This autumn/winter is all about opulent, rich prints in feminine structured shapes, with references to the 1940s and 1960s. There is a great sense of women allowed to be women and not be afraid to embrace our body shape.
I will definitely be wearing a strong floral reference and graphic themes. Winter dressing can be so easy with the right dress, a pair of black tights, boots and a great coat!
Describe your design process
For me, the design process all starts with my customers in mind. What dresses and shapes have they been loving? What do they really want to wear? What do they want to enhance and cover up? We all may be different shapes, but we have the same things we don’t like to show.
This all happens at the same time as looking at new print and textile ideas; I usually always have in mind the feel and look I want to create for that season. I watch women on the street, what they are wearing and I always like to travel a lot as this does influence my ideas.
Then, with all my sketches, tear-outs and fabrics, I sit down with my pattern cutter and we perfect the shape to be the right length and fit. This takes time, as we try the dress on different body shapes to ensure it's not just for a size 8. I want my dresses to work in all sizes and we cut sizes 8 to 18 in all our styles – that’s something I’m very proud of.
What was the first piece you designed?
This would have to have been a gorgeous gold shimmer dress that I re-designed from its original 1970s shape to become a modern dress with a twist, and it must have been ten years ago now.
I couldn’t find the shape I wanted to wear in any shop, and then I realised, well, if I couldn’t find it, I could just create one. I wore it to my brother-in-law's birthday and it definitely started that spark inside me to embrace my creativity.
Tell us about some of the celebrities you have worked with
It is very flattering to have such women as Holly Willoughby, Helen Mirren, Emma Bunton, Meg Mathews, Kate Garraway, Lorraine Kelly, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Lamb wearing and loving Ingenue London dresses.
However the most exciting thing for me is when I see women on their way to work wearing Ingenue, out with their family on a Saturday wearing my dresses, or at a wedding or in the supermarket. I was in Marks & Spencer's recently and a stunning woman in her 50s was wearing a Lotte dress doing her grocery shopping. I skipped all the way home, as I was just so happy to see her going about her daily business looking relaxed and beautiful in one of my styles.
Which famous person would you most like to see wearing your clothes?
I would love to see Carole Middleton and her beautiful daughters wearing Ingenue dresses, and Zara Philips, Jessica Ennis – all stunning, striking women who represent Britain in 2012!
