Dressing for a day at the races

1

If you’re lucky enough to have bagged tickets to one of this summer’s racing events, then you’re in for a treat! Sipping a glass of something bubbly, whilst mingling with friends, soaking up the atmosphere (and hopefully the sunshine too!) and admiring the wonderful outfits on display sounds fantastic. So, it’s time to get serious with race day fashion.

Royal Ascot is one of the world’s most prestigious racing events, synonymous with elegance and style. It’s become an annual fashion event in its own right and has a strict dress code to follow. Did you know that in the Royal Enclosure, ladies’ skirts or dresses must be just above the knee or longer? Dress or top straps must be at least one inch wide, hats must be worn and midriffs must be covered. So, ladies if you’re heading to Ascot, strapless or off-the-shoulder designs and shorts are a big no no. However, jumpsuits are apparently totally fine, phew!

We’ve put together a selection of pieces to help inspire you for the big day, and make sure you don’t break any rules…

All dressed up

This beautiful Nika rose print dress from Phase Eight is so elegant and smart – perfect for the races. Just team it with a large hat and clutch and you’re all set.

We love this lace Ronni Nicole dress too, with slim fitting sleeves and a flared skirt, it’s so pretty and will look great for a special occasion like a day at the races. The textured lace is a great alternative to florals too.

Jumpsuits are in!

Jumpsuits are so fashionable at the moment, and we have a great collection here at QVC, so it’s hard to pick just a couple, but these are our faves. This printed Onjenu jumpsuit is so striking with its vibrant, colourful design. It’s so easy to dress up with the right heels and jewellery too and offers a modern twist to a race day outfit.

Take a look at the Bedina design from Phase Eight. It’s so stylish with a gorgeous floral print, wide straps (win!) and a tie waist for an extra touch of elegance.

Not a dress kinda girl?

Dressing up for a formal occasion doesn’t have to mean… wearing a dress! Well put together separates are just as smart. This gorgeous Du Jour mesh midi skirt features statement embroidery at the hemline and it’s so pretty and feminine.

We’ve had our eye on this metallic pleated skirt, also from Du Jour for a while now. It’s so chic and also contemporary, proving that dressing for a smart occasion doesn’t have to mean stuffy, or frumpy fashion.

Try this gorgeous lace shirt tucked into a flared midi skirt. It’s so ladylike and will look great with a hat and pearl jewellery for a day at the races. This beautiful crepe duster jacket from Ghost is so on our wish lists! It’s a great piece to finish off your outfit perfectly. Perhaps wear it over a printed dress or top and skirt.

The perfect shoe

Stilettos are maybe not the thing for a race day, as you don’t want to be digging into the grass and risking an embarrassing tumble. These Peter Kaiser heels are so elegant with a simple, wide strap across the front and the all-important block heel, perfect for grass!

Another style that’s a great alternative to stilettos or kitten heels is wedges. We have fallen for these gorgeous Marc Fisher wedges with chic perforated detailing and a buckle strap. They’ll fit perfectly with your race day outfit and you can wear them again and again.

Finishing touches

Accessories can make or break your entire outfit, so make sure you pick them carefully. This leather clutch from Ashwood features a textured, woven flap-over front panel and it’s so versatile. It’ll look just as great teamed with a pretty dress or skirt as it will with jeans and flats – meaning you can get your money’s worth!

To set off your outfit, you need a little sparkle… but don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be diamonds! This simple necklace and stud earrings set from Diamonique is made with simulated diamonds with a classic solitaire design. So, it’s the perfect choice if you’re looking for something understated.
