Doing something scary for the first time in 43 years…

13

Another enormously busy week this week 🙂 including doing something I have not done for around 43 years – an actual talk and a bit of public speaking! I was invited by Sheena last year to go and speak at their Women’s Institute annual shindig. Well the year has flown by, Sheena is now a very good friend of mine and the evening went very well. It was the first time I have been to anything like this. Have you ever been to one or do you go? Which WI are you a member of?

When it was my turn to talk, I gave a little bit of information about me, my background, the fact that I split my time between Devon and running a guesthouse there, and London where I work for QVC. Quite a few people had not heard of QVC so I gave them a little talk about how to sell things, which Sylvia West, the area support advisor, was pleased to hear – she explained that she is often telling the ladies how to sell being part of the WI so it was very handy! Sally, the Little Torrington President, was very funny and MC of the night. I was nervous but there were a few fans of QVC nodding keenly in the audience, so they helped me. It was nice to do something different, and I am classing it as a TIFFT (Try it For the First Time) club. Have you done any good first time events recently? I’ve been asked to do another one in Devon in October, so hopefully I will be better then. 🙂 It seemed to go down well however and people wanted to hear more about Medical Detection Dogs and my other pastimes. They were a lovely bunch and I can tell that this organisation helps a lot of people, especially ones who are quite alone where they live. If you know someone like that, do you go along to your local WI if there is one. It’s not just about baking cakes! I came home with a lovely feeling of bon homie.

Lunchtime show

Presented the lunchtime show on Monday this week with the lovely Eilidh, one of our newest presenters. I must admit although it was fun, my brain just doesn’t work at that time of day! I have been put on a Lunchtime Show again at the end of May I think. So let’s see what damage it gets up to then 🙂 I just never seem to wake up until about 4pm ha, ha. You?
Under Dartmoor skies a-snapping

What beautiful weather for a photography weekend. The clouds came and went, the skies were blue, and the Ultrasun was definitely needed! Some fabulous photographs were taken too – here are just a couple. Amazing that all of this is just about half an hour away from me in Devon. We’ll want to do it again sometime in the future, and focus on a different angle of photography this time. Thank you to Lee Orchard for all your tips and hints.

By the way here is our range of once a day sun protection, called Ultrasun. It’s absolutely brilliant so do you go look. And here is this month’s Beauty Pick of the Month the Ultrasun Sun Protection Supersize Body Tan Activator SPF 30, but only a couple of days to get it at with no P&P so be quick 🙂 ends at midnight on 30th April.

Weird weather watch

Of course it’s not always sunny, far from it. In the recent cold spell, it was so cold the drips from the thatched roof at my place in Devon, created these little frosticles. Claire my neighbour gave me this picture this week, they had gone by the time I returned after the Beast from the East had been and gone, and I missed it all. So thank you Claire for letting me see this little phenomenon in Sheepwash!

Watch 1:

Two things must get a mention this week. Firstly the new drama called The Split, it looks really good, on BBC one on Tuesday night about a family firm of lawyers who set up against each other, and the work they do amongst the rich and famous divorce.

Watch 2:

Secondly I have to rave about the cinema film, Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I think it is one of the best films I have seen for a long time. Now you know I love this era. One of the reasons why I like doing vintage tea rooms at my place in Devon when we use proper china cups and make the place look a bit more old-fashioned, which is okay on a bank holiday as we can take it all down again afterwards! Well this film completely suckered me in and kept me spellbound for the whole hour and a half. Some brilliant turns including Lily James (Downton Abbey) but the reason why I would see it again in a heartbeat is the hero of the movie, Mr Adams, played by Michiel Huisman. In a word, gorgeous! Highly recommended, to go and see it if you can.

Book of the week:

This week, I am still reading the second in the series by Louise Penny, about inspector and mash based in Canada. It’s very good and I am nearing the climax!

Finally, go to my Facebook page to see the latest blogs. You will see Wednesday’s vlog when I asked should I tell this joke at the WI talk! See what you think and you will get an idea of how it all went on Wednesday night in Little Torrington Victory Hall!

This week on QVC:

On Monday Northern Nights is launching its new Cotton Rich range – it’s 65% cotton, 35% polyester. Adding the polyester to cotton enhances the easy care properties of the linens, they dry quicker, are easier to iron and they’re harder wearing.

Monday’s Today’s Special Value is the Ultimate Perfecting trio from Alpha-H including two brand new launches

Tuesday – it’s a lovely pair of Links of London Love Knot earrings in a choice of sterling silver, rose gold vermeil or yellow gold vermeil

Wednesday – Kim & Co is back with a pair of deluxe denim pull-on slim-leg jeans in regular and petite

And on Thursday – it’s the Ultrasun four-piece Tan and Protect Collection in a choice of Family or Glamorous

Next week on the blog:

Going for a fabulous pedicure at Margaret Dabbs salon in advance of her new special offer for perfect tootsies this summer, lunch with my Lolly and a bump update, and a tour around my blossoming garden in Devon.

Have a lovely week!

Best wishes

Debs
