- Pop up tearooms and tasty cakes – & meeting readers – faces-to-names time.
- Lovely lunch after wedding dress fitting with daughter-in-law to be!
- Sad Goodbyes to old friends

TASTY CAKES AND CHARITY FUNDRAISER

Well, they did it! My lovely Lauren and her boyfriend Nick (pictured above) carried off their Wotton Church Fundraiser with aplomb, in a local village hall on Sunday.

Nick made some amazing cakes and it was a pleasure to help them organise it. The profits raised lots of money for the charity and they both very much enjoyed running the pop up tearooms.

Nick’s cakes were heavenly, I’m sure anyone who tasted them would agree. My fave was a gluten free almond and orange cake, and I have to admit I did a little taster of most of the offerings – which for me, Missus ‘doesn’t eat sugar’ here, it was a bit of a shock to the system (hence the sugar hangover afterwards – serves me right! Lol).

Still, it was a fun afternoon and we were lucky that the weather held out too.

MEET UP WITH THE READERS

Debbie Flint with beta readersWe sat putting the world to rights, did Andie, Joy, Cath, Sharon and I – just a few of my lovely helpful girls from my Facebook beta-readers group.

They aided me in writing my first novel by giving feedback and opinions, in the closing stages. We’re all avid readers, as well as writers, so one of the top topics of discussion at the tearooms – well apart from QVC of course! – was reviews.

Now it got me to thinking – how important are reviews to you? We were discussing book reviews, but other products too.

‘Read It Write It Sell It’ – my regular book segment – will reveal some enlightening information for those wishing to self-publish – namely how important reviews are to people about to buy a book online. And of course, the same thing goes for QVC products.

So I have a question for you –
How important are customer reviews to YOU?

When you buy a book online, a holiday, or crucially – a QVC product? Let’s continue the debate here this week. Just leave me a comment at bottom of this blog to be counted. I’d love to know!

THE BELLS WILL BE RINGING…

Debbie Flint at lunch after Kari's wedding dress fittingYes, it was a nice experience to go to the wedding dress fitting and be ‘stand-in mother’, for my son Brad’s wife-to-be, Kari.

Went with Lauren, early Saturday morning (am still recovering from the early alarm call…! Lol) and we had a nice lunch afterwards in a nearby Italian deli in Kingston.

It was lovely getting a sneaky peep at ‘the’ dress – very stylish! – can’t say more or I will be for the high jump! Lol.

But lovely Kari invited Lolly and me to go along to help offer suggestions and opinions about the alterations.

Then we went up the road to put the world to rights, before sent her back to my boy! Another nice day, and a definite TiFFT.* The biggest of all, of course, will be in October!

ANOTHER ANGEL HEADS FOR THE HEAVENS

Amica and BeulahSadly you’ll probably know by now, if you’re active online, lovely model Amica lost her fight this week against the breast cancer she’s been battling for two years, and passed on peacefully at the hospice she’d gone to a few days beforehand.

Her hubby posted sadly on Facebook, and Will Gowing did a post on our QVC UK Facebook page.

If you’d like to add your thoughts there, do go to the QVCUK Facebook wall – some lovely comments for a lovely lady.

I’ve been asked to be one of the presenters on this year’s Breast Cancer Care – it will be particularly poignant I’m sure.

(For those who have been asking, the little vid that’s been doing the rounds on Facebook, of Amica’s speech a couple of years ago, will be posted on the LINK home page LINK of my own website, for anyone who would like to see it.) And I hope you enjoy this lovely pic of the two gorgeous girls, how we all remember them.

STILL TO COME… fascinating canine facts, sneaky peeks and focus on The Newsroom…

RIWISI

Read it Write It Sell It – my weekly look at all things book.

Hawaiian Affair PG VersionHA update – Talking of reviews, for this first time author, I have to put hand on heart and say they very much matter to me. Both when I buy, if I’m wavering about an item; but also on my own novel.

This week, Hawaiian Affair reviews have topped 100 five stars – now 112 out of 122 – across all the different versions, both instalments and complete books. Am so proud.

One more week till the complete PG eBook version of my first novel Hawaiian Affair goes on Amazon – at 99p!  Prepare to download it! And watch out next week if you don’t know how to – I’m creating a video guide!

Book reviews- Topic of the Week on my website: Reviews – vital or irrelevant? Well the topic of who uses reviews to guide their buying decisions continues on the first extended Book Blog.

The Thrill of the ChaseBook of the Week this week is just a little short story by a writing group pal of mine – it’s a gentle but charming romance with a twist in the tale.

Now it’s her first ever attempt at self-publishing, and she’s done it all herself, so I’m very proud of her. Do add your comment if you can, if you buy it, as she’s nearly ready to upload her first full length novel after this but is full of nerves about it all. I said she shouldn’t be – see what you think.

It’d be great if you give this short story – ‘The Thrill of the Chase’ – a little look! Click here to see it on amazon.

Next week on RiWiSi – An insider’s guide to self-publishing – how is it done? A success story from guest blogger Emily Harvale. And how can you read books on kindle – without having to own a kindle? A video guide…

BLOOPER

Not really an outtake as such, but thought the pet lovers amongst you might like to see Dale’s performing pooch – what will he do for a Pet Munchie?! Lol How cute! If I get the chance, it’ll be Gracie who I bring into work with me for the Pampered Pets hour Friday 6pm (16th – see below).

SNIPPETS

Debbie with her dogs- As you might know, I have four Labradors! So they’ve chosen me to present the next hour. So I do hope the animal lovers amongst you will join me for Friday’s (19th) 6pm Pampered Pets show (on QVC Live).

If you’re an early reader of this weekly blog and see this in time! If you miss it, I’ll post some clips on my website soon after! (www.debbieflint.com)

Dogs in television programme– And talking of canine capers, did you see a fab prog this week– an utterly fascinating documentary including some fab facts – called the ‘Secret Life of Dogs’?

Daughter Lauren rang me and alerted me to it and I’m glad she did. Being a fascinating facts lover, here are some for you-

• Did you know there are more shapes, sizes and varieties in the dog world than any other mammal on earth?

• Dogs’ eyes have only two colour receptors unlike our three, making them a little colour blind – often why a dog will ignore an orange toy in the green grass – better to give them something blue.

• They can hear things four times farther away and twice as high pitched as we can.

• A dog’s brain is one tenth the size of ours, but the part controlling smell is 40 times larger – and they have up to 300m scent glands in the nose compared to our 5 million; also a wet nose maximises the number of scent molecules from the air – so powerful they can smell things from the past – days, weeks, even months after they’ve happened.

It features some super facts, & adorable dogs. Look on YouTube for some great clips.

New QVC channels– Next, in case you’ve missed the news, don’t forget we now have brand new channels QVC Style (Sky 683, Freesat 818) and QVC Extra (Sky 667, Freesat 814).

Now the red button is no longer operative, you can see other choices on THREE other channels if what’s on live doesn’t appeal to you – including the existing QVC Beauty (Sky 658, Freesat 816 and Freeview part day ch 35.)

Yay! To find out more click here.

Debbie Flint with her siblings at a meal Neices and great-neices

- Had a lovely get together with my siblings to mark my deceased dad’s birthday. Bless him, he would have been 74 this month! It’s always very funny when mum and her motley crue gather in one place, and a good time was had by all!

Then early this week, my little great-neice came round to see her ‘Uncle Debbie’ – yes really – bless! Along with her mum and auntie Heather. Nice to spend a bit of time with family!

Facebook Funny - cake

- And finally a Facebook funny for you – doing the rounds and very appropriate for this weekend’s events – so I thought I’d share it!

Is this you? If so, join the club! Mind you, after this week’s sugar hangover, I won’t be doing that again in a hurry! lolx

FOOTNOTES

WATCH –  ‘The Newsroom’ – ohhhhh I so love this series! Series one is currently being repeated on Sky Atlantic, or available on DVD or download – here’s a trailer.

I love it because it reminds me a bit of being a production assistant in the Piccadilly Radio Newsroom in Manchester in the mid 80s… (well, a bit!).

I love the way the plotlines echo real life headlines and I adore some of the characters, like Jim Harper and Olivia Munn (who reminds me a bit of my pal LJ Rich).

Do catch the rest of it before the new series starts in September – I’m giving it 8.75 out of ten for a TV series – high, for me! Here’s the Series 2 trailer.

PLUS – watch out for the next Stephen King/Spielberg outing ‘Under the Dome’ – series premieres on channel 5 Monday 19th at 10pm.

P.S. also – next week, on August 22nd – Jane Horrocks’ supermarket sitcom ‘Trollied’ is back on Sky. Love it! If you’ve never seen, it, watch this!

Guess I’ll be filling up my Sky+ box again soon! Lol x

QVC – SNEAKY PEEKS – OK so the 23rd is drawing ever nearer, so I thought I’d sneak you a peek at the other set of Red Carpet Manicure options in the upcoming Today’s Special Value – join me and sis Linda midnight on Thurs 22nd for the launch! And how about these happy colours!?

    Hi Debs,
I’m so sad to hear about Amica. Just tragic. So dreadful for her family. I hope the school is good to Amica’s girls. They’ll need it x

    Hi Debbie,
Just wanted to say a massive ‘Thank you’ for my copy of ‘Hawaiian Affair’ won in the recent competition on your blog. Such a cliché I know but I never win anything so I was chuffed to bits. I can’t wait to start reading it & I will be sure to leave a review to let you know what I thought.
I always look at reviews & find them soooo useful, especially for new products or unfamiliar authors. I find they encourage me to try something new if it’s been positively reviews by others. I also find it comforting to see positive reviews on things I already like as it reinforces my love of the product. It’s like when friends recommend something, the first thing you want to do is go & buy it (well I do anyway, is it just me ?).
Loving the blog Debs, read it avidly – like a letter from a friend giving great reviews. I find it inspiring & a great source of info & advice. Have used many of your recommendations & always found them fantastic, thank you :-)x

Hi Debs, My heart breaks for Amica and Beulah and their families. I have been watching QVC for 18 years and its like you know people on QVC personally. Truly beautiful people. You were asking about reviews and I agree they are important as long as people describe why they like something or don’t like something. Everyone is different and it means different things to different people. I have a mind that is open to everything, as Wayne Dwyer says everything is possible. I bought your book “Hawaiian Affair” (steamy version, Shush) loved it and also because it had a happy ending. Looking forward to prequel. Love your shows. Could you bottle your energy and send to me in crates please. Thank you, patiently waiting for them to arrive.

So sorry about Amica, can’t believe it, what a beautiful human being. I will miss her as will all the QVC customers.
Debbie your blog is so informative, what a lot of info. Dogs look gorgeous and they are such good friends.
I love your way of presenting you say it as it is and don’t care (call a belly a belly)
Look forward to your next blog

For those of us who don’t use Facebook, can QVC have another way of relaying news such as the demise of lovely Amica? I’ve only just heard about it via your blog – such a terrible tragedy.
Could QVC have an ‘Information’ blog or can Will Gowing’s blog act as an information source about things like this? Not everyone is on Facebook and we do miss out on things. thank you!
By the way, who is the other lady in the photo next to Amica’s on your blog? I can’t place her.
    Thank you so much

I am so sorry to hear about both Amica and Beulah. My thoughts and prayers are with both families. I do not do Facebook so cannot see Amica speak again. All I know is that heaven is a better place at the moment with both those beautiful people in it.

    Hi Debs
I agree with Sue – QVC should have a news blog or something similar as we’re not all on facebook or twitter. I was so sorry to hear the sad news about Amica, I have missed her recently but no-one had mentioned that she was poorly again, also Beulah, she was one of my favourite models – so natural – but I never knew she was ill or had passed away.
I feel really sad today after reading your blog and learning the very sad news about two really lovely ladies.
Could QVC design a piece of Diamonique in memory of Amica and Beulah as a lasting tribute and perhaps the profit could go to Breast Cancer Care ???
    Luv ….Pat

    Hi Debs
First of all my sympathies to the colleagues, friends and families of Amica and Beulah. Beautiful and dignified despite what they were going through.
The dog programme was fab!!!! I love animals soooo much. How boring would the world be without them.
    Your dogs are GORGEOUS!!!
Reviews are essential as long as – as someone said before – people state why they like or dislike and give a little info on themselves that is relevant i.e height, hair type, wide-footed etc.
Glad you gonna explain how can get a kindle without having a kindle as i got a kobo!
Thank you for your infornative blogs as like others i am not on facebook anymore!

    Hello Debbie,
I always read and enjoy your blogs but don’t post every week as I know you reply to all comments and I still don’t know how you fit it all in!
How very sad to hear about Amica and Beulah. They were both so beautiful and my heart goes out to their families.
It was my daughters wedding last Saturday and the day went wonderfully smoothly. My husband is, sadly, a younger onset dementia sufferer and not well enough to give her away but was able to attend thanks to the wonderful staff who look after him at his care home. My son deputed for him and walked his sister down the aisle with the page boy, his 3 year old son, clinging to his left leg! (rather like the jilted girl-friend in the Smack the Pony sketch if you know the one I mean) It was a wonderful day and all seems a little surreal now. A very emotional day but wonderful also. Please try and cherish every moment of your sons big day, you obviously already have a very good relationship with his fiancée. The last few weeks go by so quickly and the day almost seems to arrive unannounced and take you by surprise, rather like Christmas even though its the 25th December every year. So take my advice and get ahead as much as possible!
I didn’t catch the ‘Secret Life of Dogs’ but thought the ‘Secret Life of Cats’ on BBC2 a few weeks ago was brilliant.
I am having a quiet week now to recover, just a little light housework and lunch out to re-cooperate.
God bless Amica and Beulah and their families.
Love to you and your family,
    Margot x

And well done on the TiFFT – was it the hotel bit or the being a tourist bit? Am thinking that I should hire a sight seeing bus to take me and a bunch of pals around the sights and do it properly one day too! Living near London often means we keep leaving it and leaving it and end up never ‘doing’ the London sights properly!

I would recommend the thrill of the chase I think it is a wonderful store and I couldn’t put it own.

Oh what a wonderful, entertaining, interesting and enlightening blog!
Reviews are very important to me! I also write them often and give as detailed and honest review as I can. Whatever I buy I like to find out what similar people to me think about any item, their experience with them and how they have used them. It helps me decide if it will be suitable for me and regardless of positive, negative or anything in between, all the details really help.
So pleased your tearooms, tasty cake & meeting readers went well. Only sorry I could not come. Loved your pictures!
How adorable that your DIL to be included you in the wedding dress fitting excitement – so kind! She seems like she will be a joyous addition to your family! To go for a lovely lunch was the icing on the cake afterwards!
Sad news about the beautiful Amica, especially after the recent sad loss of sweet Beulah. They are part of our lives too, as are all the presenters, models and regular guests, especially to viewers like me who have been with QVC for almost 2 decades!
Like the zesty new RCM candy nail colours! Have plenty to keep me going for some time. Used in conjunction with my other OPI, LD & Nails Inc, I am enjoying having a field day every day where my nails are concerned! So many colours, so little time (and limited numbers of nails, even including toes, lol)!
Your pooches are perfect! Poor Polly! So funny with the feeder! Adorable labs like my Canine Partner, Nesta! Pampered Pets hour was fun! Dale’s performing pooch blooper is a classic – wonderful!
Glad you enjoyed your TiFFT! I am having one this week – a trip to London to go on the London Eye and London Dungeons! I want to do a whole bunch more … tour Houses of Parliament, visit some of the museums (V&A, Science, Natural History), experience Madame Tussauds and the Crown Jewels, go to the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, The Globe Theatre, etc…!) All challenging when you need to park nearby so you can unload your wheelchair to get about! Like you say, when you live somewhere, you put off going! I lived in London for 11 years, but that was up to 1989 and there are lots of new attractions to explore!
Always look forward to your shows and you asking the kind of questions I would if I was there!
    Speak soon!

    Speak soon!

Hi Debs, love reading your blogs always full of information and funny bits as well. Have not replied before but felt I had to add my heart felt feeling of sadness at the loss of Amica and Beulah. I have watched QVC for approx sixteen years. I have tried to find the video of Amica’s speech at BCC but cant find it. Keep up the good work. Take care.

    Hi Debs,
Better late than never then, I am always behind everyone else reading things. Feeling a bit better now so am taking time to catch up.
Great blog as always, with lovely pics of your family and loved the video’s of Dale’s dog and your four lovelies.
I was very sad to hear about Amica I really thought that she was going to make a full recovery albeit with medication and it all seemed to happen so quickly. My thoughts are with her family, relatives and friends who must be so absolutely devastated.
Am going for some further tests this week so fingers crossed eh, am very very scared.
Keep up the good work with your writing, I just wish that I had a quarter of your energy.
    Big hugs

    Oh Debbie.
I’ve only just heard the devastating news about Amica and Beulah. I write this with tears rolling and feeling totally choked. Amica looked so well last time I saw her on air. She was a truly lovely lady and my favourite model, so sincere and positive in her outlook, and I trusted her views on beauty products. I had no idea her cancer had returned. My heart goes out to her family. And then to read that Beulah had also passed. Such a shock. A double whammy. Although I do not know when or why Beulah was taken from us. Both ladies were special and a huge part of the qvc family. We will miss them. Life is so cruel. I agree with others that qvc should have an information page so that those of us not on Facebook can be informed of these things. I also agree that it would be a lovely idea to have a memorial show to honour both ladies with jewellery pieces made for them or flowers named after them, or something similar. Come on qvc, thinking caps on.

    Hi Debbi
I just love your programmes they are so informative and happy -n you are just a very happy lady.
I was devastated to hear about Amica she was such a beautiful and gracious lady. My prayers are with her family. Also with Beulah’s family, did not know she was ill. A QVC blog would be great as I am not a facebook fan.
I always read the reviews and help me to decide if I will buy.

    Hi Debbie,
I’m devestated to here about Amica one of my favourite models, and Beulah such beautiful ladies whose I will forever miss, my heart goes out to their families.
QVC, should do something to honor their memory, I know that Amica was a long serving model, so was Beulah, may they rest in peace.
Congrats, on your book I’ve just brought kindle version, you blogs are very good, giving me at times a real belly laughter, and your shows are full of fun and informative.
    All the best
    Sista.
