CONFERENCE FOR YOUNG GIRLS
I’ve had an interesting week outside of working at QVC. Last Sunday was spent in the company of 100 (yes, 100!) young girls, aged between 11 and 14 years. I’m part of a professional network called REMARKABLE WOMEN, which gets support from the mobile phone company, Nokia to meet up and inspire other young professional women in a variety of ways. One of my fellow professionals Naomi Richards decided earlier in the year to host a Conference for Girls. She runs her own business called, The Kids Coach which aims to ‘empower children to be their best’.
Having delivered countless talks to hundreds of young men and women in the past about careers in the Journalism, the Media and TV presenting, I offered to run one of 4 separate workshops with 25 girls in each one, called ‘Be Your Own BFF (Best Female Friend)’. It was a terrific day which was kicked off by the wonderful Ruby and Kimberley, finalists from this year’s BBC2’s Great British Bake Off, who were a fabulous success and revealed much about their journey towards self-confidence and self-belief. The other sessions during the day were led by my fellow REMARKABLE WOMEN Writer & Editor Jane Bradley, Choreographer Kymberlee Jay and Magician Laura London.
The aim of my Be Your Own BFF session was to help the young ladies be kinder to themselves, help them become more confident in their own skills and abilities, and give them some tips on how to go about making more friends and handling difficult friendships. I also gave them a little TV Presenter challenge to write and deliver their own TV report to camera, which many girls rose to very successfully at the end of the session.
I tried to use my own experience as an example: being not so happy with myself and body image as a young girl, being very shy and retiring (believe it or not) and explaining the ways in which I coped with going through changes at senior school and university. The girls all seemed to have a great time and learned a lot from hearing that confidence grows over time, that’s it’s not an overnight transition. Here’s some feedback and info about the day.
I’m one of very few women in Britain who regularly writes about beer – because I really truly like the drink: stouts, ales, bitters, pilsners, milds, sours, barley wines: you name them I’m a fan and have been for coming on 4 years now. I love beer and I like to spread the word about the beauty in beer via my website Beer Beauty. I like writing about all the lovely beers I’ve discovered on my travels, the Beer and Food Dinners I’ve organised in the past, the TV shows I’ve appeared on talking about beer and recommendations of some of the nice pubs and bars I’ve encountered along the way. Last Thursday night, The Hubz & I attended the Annual British Guild of Beer Writers awards ceremony. I was asked to help collect the winning Silver Tankard for a project I was asked to be part of. In January this year I was asked to present a video for the British Beer and Pub Association which was used to lobby the Chancellor, George Osborne. Read more about the award, the beer and food we had on the night and see some more fab photos on my blog, Beer Beauty.
I’ve got a sneak peak of Lulu’s Time Bomb TSV coming up next week – I’m really impressed by the way the whole set looks. I can’t reveal the Today’s Special Value Price to you because that’s top secret until it launches on midnight Tuesday 17th December, so hang on until then. It looks like the perfect skin-boosting package for yourself or for someone you want to treat – see the image to the left for a first look (this is now the correct pic of what's in the kit). Join me with Lulu at 12.00 on Tuesday 17th for a full live presentation of the TSV and much more from her range. I can’t wait!
On Sunday, our pals Faith and Adam finally got hitched in the most magical winter wedding ever! At a gorgeous venue in Dorridge in the West Midlands, the pair’s passion for both Star Wars and Harry Potter was channelled in the most elegant of ways. Faith looked like Audrey Hepburn in her sequined dress, crystal-covered Louboutins and faux fur stole, while Adam, the Best Men (there were three!) and the ushers all wore very dapper suits & tails, complete with bespoke Storm Trooper button holes and cuff links! A big hello to Adam’s Mum, his two aunts and Faith’s Mum who are all keen QVC viewers – terrific to meet you all, Ladies! It was magnificent share our friends’ Big Day and celebrate the love of their favourite movies. Austen and I want to thank them for the fun, the laughter, the music, the dancing and the fireworks. It was a truly spectacular day!
