Crumbs!!!

That was all that was left on the plate earlier this week after my latest baking 'discovery' – Dorset Apple Cake. Have you ever tried it? Absolutely gorgeous.

I have had the recipe for a while and finally got round to trying it on Monday as we were having a barbecue and I thought it would make a nice dessert served warm with vanilla ice cream and a glass of chilled white wine. I was right – a real winner – so I thought I would share my recipe as I haven't done one for a while.

Ingredients

1 large Bramley apple (about 8oz)
8oz self-raising flour
1tsp baking powder
half a teaspoon cinnamon
4oz cold butter (I use Brittany butter with sea salt in it)
4oz golden caster sugar
2 medium eggs, beaten
Finely grated zest of 1 lemon

Method

1. Preheat oven to 190C (Gas Mark 5), and lightly grease 20cm/8 inch cake tin (preferably springform base)
2. Peel and core the apple and cut into quarters. Dice 3 quarters and finely slice the other
3. Put flour, baking powder and cinnamon into a mixing bowl and rub in diced butter to form breadcrumbs
4. Add the sugar, diced apple and lemon zest then gradually stir in the beaten eggs
5. Spoon into cake tin and level the surface. Arrange the apple slices on the top of the cake.
6. Bake for 30 – 35 minutes until springy to the touch. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with a couple of teaspoons of golden caster sugar. Leave to cool slightly (about 10 minutes) and then serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Go on – treat yourself! Have a great weekend
Love, Julia xx

    Hi Julia,
Just checked out the recipe…my brother would like it…loves anything apple. I just had to mention the Apprentice this week talking of sweet things. I was amazed at the results! I thought Helen made a boo boo with her contradictory catch phrase I must say. Think she had an off week.

Hello Julia, Thanks for the lovely recipe for Dorset Apple Cake, I live in Malaga in Spain, and had my family over for lunch today, I made Chicken Chassuer and decided last night to make you cake recipe for afters, as I had icecream, and all other bits, well it really was a hit, and have passed the recipe on to my daughter in law and my daughter, its been really hot here today around 32 degrees, with one of those winds that blow from the land, so stayed inside this afternoon to watch the tennis, sorry Rafa didnot win, but its nice sometimes for different people to win things, keep well Love Janicexx

    Julia,
Your Apple Cake, I make one which is a similar recipe to yours, but mine has some sultanas in it. There seems to be something about an apple cake, it never lasts. It seems to be everybody’s favourite, not to heavy and really moist. Thank you for reminding me I must make another one or two and freeze one. Last weekend when I ran a gundog working test, and it was time for the Judges break, I produced the coffee and got out the cake, the reply was is that one of your famous apple cakes, unfortunately for them it was not, I had decided to make an ordinary fruit cake, mine you that did not last long either. This particular fruit cake has marmalade in it, and it makes it really moist. What did you think of last weeks Apprentice, ‘oh’ the knives are out now arent they, just you wait until I get you in the boardroom tactics. Hope you had a great weekend, the weather was lovely.
    Speak soon.
    Luv Jean X

    Hi Julia
Your apple cake sounds scrummy, would love to make it, but I know Chris wouldn’t like it, he’s not a great one for apples, so I would end up eating it all myself…then my Diane Gilman jeans wouldn’t fit LOL!!!
Will be up late watching the DG TSV…can’t wait!
My Tiffany lamp arrived yesterday and looks stunning on the corner cabinet…tried to get Chris to invest in another one, but he hasn’t bitten yet!
The tale of your friends glass top fishtank was brill, there must have been some mortifying moments, forgetting to put the glass top back on! Saw the fish on Saturday in their new tank, all looked well and happy, although three keep escaping through the pipework making their way into four other tanks and they have to keep fishing them out and putting them back again!
The pink Together outfit really suited you and I have also seen the range before too!

    P.S. 8.00pm tomorrow BBC4 don’t forget to record/watch ballet!

Hi from spain, i’m here for a week, not the weekend (i flew out at the weekend)on my own too, not easy for my partner getting time off when you are a chef.Just read the previous blog from Janice in Malaga, she’s right it’s very hot here and getting hotter as the week goes on apparently. I’m about 1/2hr or so further down the coast from malaga near Mijas Costa. Really lovely place.Met some neighbours and went for a cycle ride to the beach, that was fun, but it only took about 5 mins to cycle cause it’s quite close by.Should be completing on house very soon now, and my partner will have to come back with me. I saw the Together show before i left for spain, i to have quite a few things from the range, the top you had on i have in yellow have ordered it in pink now. I thought the skirt was a perfect fit on you any smaller wouldn’t have been flattering for your shape, nice though. Just before i left i received some items from Karen Miien, several tops, and my real favourite a black aysametic top with red yellow and green splashes on the front all in the sale. I know your a fan of K/M but i havn’t seen you wear this one yet. Bye for now.

Hi Julia, just to let you know, in answer to your question on your last blog, that my Butler and Wilson TSV bracelet and the B&W lizard brooch have both arrived. The bracelet is fab and will see much use, but the lizard brooch is just out of this world!!!! It is fantastic and I love it so much. It has joined my ‘pride of place’ section in my jewellery collection, along with Simon’s champagne glass brooch and his dancing couple brooch, but each of them are for wearing and are definitely not display items. I have so much of Simon’s jewellery now and key rings and handbags etc, but I just can’t resist as it is all so fabulous and yet utterly wearable. Don’t think of retiring Simon and you must not let him Julia. Could you ask Simon if he could make some clip on decorations specifically for the front and/or the back of dressy shoes please? I think some of his designs and colours would look fabulous on shoes as they do on clothes and when attached to bags as well. Just an idea. I bought one of my friends his latest cat brooch in clear for her birthday recently and she adores it as she is a real cat fan. This one is of the cat standing up and I bought the clear version and last year I bought her the clear version of his cat brooch which was with the cat sitting down – both so very life like. Your receipe has been stored and will be made very soon as it sounds delicious. By the way, I am the person who wrote to you about whether or not I had bought the correct Pilates machine when it was a TSV recently. Kept the machine and am enjoying using it, but looking for some beginners Pilates classes now to build on the excellent info on the DVDs to become more sure of what I am doing. Love all your shows Julia, especially with Simon and the beautiful Ali, but also enjoyed the Elemis anniversary shows with you and Keeley – cup cakes as well – naughty, naughty!!!! Many thanks and sorry to go on about many things!!! Love Sue x

Will Ali Young be interviewing you about your beauty addictions this month? I hope so. And is there any chance you could interview Ali? That would be really great. xx

Glad to hear the Apple Cake was such a hit. I felt sorry for Rafa too but I do think the best player on the day won. Shame Andy Murray couldn’t force similar errors out of Nadal in the semi final. All over for another year – maybe it will be the Brits turn to win next year?!?!

    Hi Julia
What a shame you forgot the ballet, but then I suppose if you had watched it and it’s the same production, you would know what to expect…at least you will see it not knowing what’s going to happen next.
Although, the producer, Wayne was a nightmare, changing things right up to the last minute and because of this they couldn’t practice some of the props, so there was a hiccup on the first night. He even had Chris shouting at the TV, saying he couldn’t work with him LOL!
Like Shelley said above, the blue nail varnish looked lovely and you looked very ‘rock chick’ on the Artscapes show, especially leaving your hair curly, reminiscent of the 80’s!
I’ve not been to the hairdressers since February, which was my first visit since the accident in October. Unfortunately had a bad cut and didn’t go back to get it put right, because to do so she would have to cut it even shorter…so it’s now the longest it’s ever been and I’m sporting lovely root growth (2″), whilst trying to find another hairdresser…amazing how your confidence goes trying to find a new hairdresser, thinking, what if they make a mess of it too!
    See you Monday

I am pleased you received and are enjoying your Butler and Wilson pieces – you are obviously a big fan and as such I fear for your credit card on the 16th Anniversary coming up on 13th August ( just happens to be my Mum’s birthday! ).
I do love working with Simon, and Keeley of course – I was only a little bit naughty with the cup cakes!!
Marjolein is back this Friday so if you want any expert advice do call in during her shows – I am only doing one on Friday afternoon at 4p.m.
Enjoy the cake when you eventually make it

    Hi Annette
I was so cross with myself for forgetting the ballet – maybe just as well if you and Chris were getting so irate with ‘Wayne’!!
OK so you’ve sussed me …. when my ‘roots’ need a little touch up I tend to wear my hair more ‘au natural’ so they don’t show so much. My hair grows about an inch a month so very regular visits to see my ‘friend’ Alwyn at Aveda.
When you are more mobile you should get Chris to treat you to a trip up to see Alwyn and Micheal – they will sort your hair out for sure – maybe a Christmas present this year??
Hope you got your DG’s they were absolutely ‘flying’ last night!

    Hi Julia
Missed the DG’s in my size 12S, typical! We had to have an early night because of a viewing on the house early this morning, plus that fact that it takes me twice as long to do things now, so have to get up earlier still! Couldn’t read any signs from the couple that came, so will have to wait and see. By time I got to see the TSV, my size had gone…never mind.
Now I think if we were in competition with roots, I would win hands down on this one…mousey brown hair with blonde highlights and because I have a fringe, only the tips are blonde now…very fetching, maybe I’ll start a new trend! Gosh, haven’t thought about Aveda in a while, used to use their shampoos and conditioners all the time now there’s a thought…thank you.
Looking forward to seeing Marjolein again on Friday, she was so nice emailing me back so quickly. I absoluteley love my AeroPilates machine, but don’t laugh, I bought a stand for it (sorry not from QVC), in a sale and then realised that I couldn’t use it yet because we have sloping ceilings in the bedroom and I wouldn’t be able to stand up and do the elephant or put my feet in the straps…fool!! It will come in handy one day though.

Let’s face it though she always looked sparkly before anyway! So pleased for her though. Funny about your hair too – didn’t realise you have your hair cut every month!? Wow that must be such a luxury!!! It must be heaven in that salon anyway even as a treat just!

    Hi Julia,
I wonder if you or Alison could possibly give me some beauty advice please as I’m too shy to phone up when you’re on air? My Mum is in her early 60’s and has suffered very bad health lately. She has always had wonderful skin but it would appear that virtually overnight she has developed very deep lines and wrinkles around her face and particularly on her cheeks. Can you recommend an anti-ageing beauty product that may show some quick results as this has left her feeling very low and self-conscious. Thanks so much for any advice.

I can’t really advise you as I am not a qualified beauty therapist – I can only really talk about the products that have helped me. My Mum loves the Liz Earle Superbalm Concentrate which she massages into her skin last thing at night – she is looking pretty good for nearly 85.

Hi Julia, hope you are enjoying the summer,! i was reading in your blogs that you are a real pin up girl for some of our armed forces and even our firefighters, well all i can say is well done and its a credit to you, and its great to see that in this age where so called pin up girls are manufactured to portray a certain image , in some cases i have to say a slightly trashy cheap image, that are here today and gone tomorrow, in my day it was Vera Lynn who was the forces sweetheart and indeed she was a great example of sincerity and hope, i am heartened a lot to read that some members of our forces would again see in you someone they can look up to as a “bit of alright”, someone to remind them of home i suppose in far off lands in difficult circumstances and someone i suppose to “drool over” and theres nothing wrong in that either, good on you Julia, i would hope more girls would aim to be your type of pin up girl ,its great to see class, natural beauty and a lovley personality being seen for what it is, god bless xx

    Hello Margaret
Thankyou so much for all your lovely compliments and kind words. I don’t set out to be a pin-up ( would have thought I was way too old for that ) but as you say if it makes the fireman and members of the armed forces forget their day to day perilous jobs for even a few minutes that I really can’t see the harm – besides which I am hugely flattered!
I read your post out to my Mum and she was thrilled to hear you compare me to Vera Lynn – shame I can’t sing like her!!!
