I have finally had to accept that we are in autumn and and winter is on its way. We've had a few sunny days and with all the leaves swirling around and the temperature not plummeting to arctic levels just yet it's been quite pleasant in the daytime. The evenings, however, are a different story. With the clocks having just gone back I always find it, psychologically, a difficult transition. Is it just me?
It gets dark so early and gets so chilly too! I tried pretending it wasn't happening but it didn't work so last night I went on a full on offensive! I decided that if I couldn't hide from the winter I was going to have to embrace it. But where to start? First I went and got my winter woollies out of storage i.e. out of their storage bags under the bed! (where do you put yours?)
I got my flannel sheets out AND most importantly, as I discovered, I lit candles everywhere! The difference it made, I can't tell you. It was incredible. I have some Price's fragranced candles that are going to be coming up as a TSV, launching on Tuesday night at midnight. They make such a difference to the look and feel of every room I have put them in. Everywhere seems cosier, warmer, more inviting. Banished are the winter blues and instead the joy of seeing those flickering candle flames dancing and bobbing fills the whole room.
Almost better than the look and feel of all that soft ambient light (let's face it we all look so much better in soft candle light), are the warming and comforting fragrances. We should never underestimate the power of fragrance to transform our mood or uplift our spirit. The 'Redcurrent & Juniper' candles have a lighter, fruit and spice fragrance perfect for this time of year and, in my opinion, are great for daytime or early evening candle burning. If you prefer more of a floral fragrance but like it on the warm, tropical side then you must sample the 'Jasmine & Mint' to give you that flavour of warm exotic evenings made that little bit more enticing by the hint of mint.
But for total winter indulgence I have to go for the 'Patchouli & Nutmeg'. There is more than a hint of hedonism about this one. Ladies it's like wearing your boyfriends shirt and a hint of his cologne to bed. It's inviting, comforting and, dare I say, a little bit exciting too. With the notes of patchouli which lend a frisson of expectation blended beautiful with the comforting scent of nutmeg this is a classic fragrance that you will want to burn in every room in your home.
What I've discovered is that when the winter blues strike with those dark evenings you can redress the balance by shedding some ambient candle light on the situation and transport yourself to happier places on the inviting ribbons of scent that entice you to forget the cold chilly evenings outside and instead remind you that you can always whisk yourself away to a better place with the strike of a match and the glow of a flickering flame.
Here's to getting cosy for winter and embracing the changing seasons…with a little help!
