I just wish it had been a couple of weeks earlier when we filmed at David Austin’s fabulous rose garden in Albrighton. The roses, although showing some colour, were about a fortnight behind so some varieties were still in tight bud.
The picture (left) shows some of our team: Anna, our lovely director and Hanif (what a great cameraman!) with Michael Marriott, the much admired technical manager of David Austin Roses.
A few days later, Anna and I filmed at Capel Manor Gardens in Enfield for a garden Inspirations programme to be broadcast later in July. I’d last visited Capel Manor five years ago and as before, I was really impressed by the scale and variety of the different display and show gardens. Senior Gardener, Tom Wheatcroft showed us around – watch out for him, he’s a rising star in the gardening world and he and his colleagues are doing a fantastic job there!
Back home in the garden, I harvested my Charlotte potatoes on Sunday. I’ve been growing them in a Marshall’s Gro-sack and fed them regularly with Flower Power, and I was delighted with the size of the crop. They tasted fabulous too, smothered with lashings of butter.
My sweet peas (grown on a wigwam of canes) are stunning and I’m picking a bunch every couple of days. In this hot weather, it’s important to keep them well watered and, to encourage more flowers, well fed.
Mine are getting Flower Power twice a week and boy is it paying off! Inside the greenhouse, my tomatoes are growing incredibly quickly in this warm weather, I reckon they’re putting on a few inches every day. It’s such an wonderful time in the garden at the moment, I just love it.
