The Trouble with Goats and Sheep
The trouble with being an author is that it’s an insular thing. So the trouble with a hugely successful book is that said author has to go and meet people! Joanna Cannon is a lovely lady destined to be hugely successful and feeling the pinch as the big day approached! She so made me smile, now she’s ‘living the dream’ as it were, with this post – bless her. Behind every big new writing success story is a terrified author!
She attended some Julie Cohen courses with me a few years ago, and after a successful pitch at the Writer’s Workshop Festival in York, released the news that her first novel is going to be the big one for Harper Collins this year! I’ve been giving regular updates about her upcoming release – out this weekend – and last night, my fellow author pal Elizabeth Williams and I went along to Jo’s big book launch party, in the News International Building underneath the Shard – now THAT’S a book launch. It was attended by many glamorous people from the world of publishing – including lovely Joanna herself! In the pic above you can see Jo in the middle, plus Litty and me, as well as fab author Julie Cohen our lovely mentor in the hat and the wonderful and very nice Paula Wilcox next to me, from the 70s sitcom Man About the House, who narrates Jo’s audiobook (on Audible and very good!). Jo is a doctor, actually, by training, so her cosy crime makes for interesting reading. Set in the summer of ’76, hence the 70’s music and nibbles like this pineapple and cheese hedgehog – took me back I can tell you!
Jo’s work caused that elusive thing called a bidding war and here Liz, the publicity director for Harper Collins tells me why it was such a stand out book –
The Book of the Week feature about The Trouble with Goats and Sheep was on my Read it Write it Sell it blog last week – click here. Find out what her editor said about the first time she knew it was a hit in the making. And there’s a free sample link too, so do go get it. 1970s coming of age drama together crossed with a cosy crime ‘whodunnit,’ it’s destined for big things.
The event was very exciting, in the lush venue of the 17th floor with glass walls all around and some lovely authors and publishing people. Can you spot top agent Carole Blake and Katie Forde here in this video of the room, her editor’s intro and how lovely and humble Joanna Cannon is – we are all so proud of her.
Anyway her book is soaring up the charts, so watch out for it in a bookshop near you too! And on this week’s RiWiSi blog, tips on how to be a writer with Julie Cohen’s workshops! And if you’d like to go to a book launch party – for TACOM and my new TTFLS 3.0 – see below! (Nothing like Jo’s one tho’! lol)
TACOM update – audiobook out in the summer!
Been asked to go do a test to narrate my own book, Take a Chance on Me – am over the moon – although I might be rubbish at being a narrator! But it seems that Howes, the audiobook producer, have bought into TACOM quite heavily with a good advance offer, and want to produce the audible version for a summer release!
Just in time to hopefully coincide with the eBook of the follow up – which I’m calling Try it for the First Time Club. Regulars will know I’ve been doing ‘try it for the first time’ events for years now, and that’s why one of my characters ends up with her own online column doing just that! Exciting times…
Invite to the Book Launch party Thursday Feb 4th
Even more exciting if you’re a fan of bookshops and QVC guests! So here’s the way you’ll be able to come along to my own LITTLE book launch – near Chiswick – 5 mins from Turnham Green tube station – click on this facebook event page or just come along! All the info is there if you click – you should be able to see it even if you’re not on Facebook, right? It’s at the Chiswick Bookshop, 12 Turnham Green Terrace, W41QP, tel 0208 994 8020 if you need to check location info. Plus STOP PRESS! You will be able to order a copy of either TACOM or TTFLS 3.0 for me to sign on the night – call and ask Emily for more info! Hope to see you there.
The profits from the new TTFLS 3.0 book are also going towards MDD too! Hence the pic of me and little Derek, the doggy they let me name, in the event page pic! As regulars will know I’m an ambassador for Medical Detection Dogs and this week, they launched their crowdfunding campaign to reach enough to fund another crucial prostate detection dog for their vital NHS study they’re embarking on – that’s the one for which I’m trying to raise enough to buy the industrial freezers in which to store the hospital urine samples. There’s a super video with Dr Clare Guest the founder on this link – if you wondered about how the clever canines do it – and how MDD are organising their research – cute dogs – click here.
Chris Gardner is up for an award at Crufts too this year, for his little lifesaver diabetic alert dog Jade – more from the Mancunian, click that link. I’m there too this year – do come say hi!
Patrick Hoy is hosting another ‘just for fun’ online virtual pub quiz via Patrick’s Facebook Quiz Event page here – do put Monday 8th February in your diary, 9-10pm, for some amusing Valentine’s based questions!
Plus – we are narrowing down the options for where to do our summer Vintage Tea Rooms events! Will keep you informed!
What a lovely post this week on the official Laura Geller page on Facebook, and shared on the Get Geller Gorgeous fan group (thank you Andie) – a wonderful way of helping to make your own eye makeup look as professional as they do it when they’re on QVC. Give it a go! The palette they are using is like 211217, 9 out of 11 five star reviews – it’s super.
James Marden’s Mardles made the headlines in the new top ten kids toys list this week – well done James! How brilliant to be at number four for the clever Mardles stickers that come to life when you put them under your phone app (back on QVC for Christmas in July.) And lovely James and Sharon kindly spotted my Take a Chance on Me steamy romance book at the airport. What a great surprise for me, as I thought it would have disappeared out of the top 100 by now! Spotted in WHSmith travel at number 97 at Stansted airport! Whoop! Here’s the article about his fab stickers at number four – check out the remaining nine!
Ridiculous things people used to believe as children. Here are 22 of them – what’s yours? Mine include that I used to think when playing a playground game about heartbeats that if I didn’t breathe my heart wouldn’t beat! And that it ALWAYS rained every night – I was quite shocked to see a cartoon once which showed a guy sleeping rough and not getting soaked! Leave me a comment below if you have a funny one! Read them here.
Back to You Update – January’s flown, hasn’t it? The last well-being Back to You show was this week, but the regular blogs continue to keep up the theme during the year – and this week’s is an interesting topic about how certain foods make some people lose weight but they DO NOT work in others.
Yankee Chat Plus you’ll see on my Back to You blog the link to the Q&A with Rosa from Yankee. I think last week’s Serenity set are some of my favourite relaxing fragrances – the large jar versions are still on advanced order – so worth getting! Am using them at home now. Don’t forget there’s a set of tealights in with the Beauty Bash Goody Bag prize I’m offering in my big blog competition! See below.
Bruce Bodyblade Shows Plus Bruce had his usual kind word about how to bodyblade to make your body the best it can be! I’ve been doing it more again lately and it certainly helps. Actually the show Bruce and Tiff and I did in the white studio is going to be on our Extra channel a lot over the next week – over most weeks to be honest! Find on TV guide – or watch our QVC Extra channel at these times –
30th at 1600
31st at 0000
2nd at 0500
3rd at 0300

Mind you, I’m also liking Nana Akua’s hula hooping! It was really fun – get it on waitlist now! Here’s the little video I posted on social media teasing the upcoming final show, using the powerhoop which sold out on the show –
A lot of people said they loved the dress I was wearing too – it’s a Yong Kim and it’s very flattering! I think I’ll wear it for my book launch party!
Keep up to date and joining in on the various support groups online, don’t forget, or if you don’t do social media, just email me – firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any nice developments to share! And don’t forget to get the Till the Fat Lady Slims books if you just can’t diet – they may change your life like they changed Dawn Allen’s – she’s lost six and half stone in the last year, using Freedom Eating, as laid out in the TTFLS books!
And finally on the wellbeing theme, do check out this video – it’s amazing what the human body can achieve if you just know how to treat it!
Big Beauty Bash Goody Bag Competition! As usual our Beauty Bash goody bags went down a storm and dozens of happy recipients who attended our bash posted pics of their stash afterwards. Well I have a random one to give away to someone who is lucky enough to be chosen using the online randomiser, from anyone leaving a comment below on this week’s blog. Just say ‘enter me’ and if you like, add your favourite product of the moment from beauty weekend! Terms and conditions here.
Dr Gross – Daily Peel training One of my faves is the Dr Gross Resurfacer. Here’s Claire and me having our training with the lovely guest, Dr Gross’ wife, Carrie. I’ve started using the Alpha Beta Daily Peel that’s two sachets of clever resurfacing acid wipes, which you wipe on, like Liquid Gold, but with this product you also wipe over a neutraliser two minutes later. Watch this space – or watch my face! Lol.
Book of the Week – John Grisham’s ‘Gray Mountain’ – it’s got the best heroine since The Pelican Brief and I’m enjoying the audiobook of his latest legal thriller very much – more here. Plus read my Read it Write it Sell it blog to discover the great news I’ve had about the audiobook version of Take a Chance on Me! (My steamy novel is not only available from most bookstores on order, but also in the usual place online.) click here.
Friends Reunited – Almost I would so love to see a reunion show of the Friends cast – wouldn’t you? I love Matthew Perry tho’ – my sister’s Christmas pressie to me was to go see him in the very show that’s stopping him being in this pic – the Art of Longing – in the West End – am going on Saturday 13th. I’ll have just had a week off to finish writing my next book, Try it For the First Time Club (which is what Choc Lit want Hawaiian Retreat to be renamed, with a cool revamp!) so it’ll be great to go on a theatre trip.
WATCH – the BEST BEST film I’ve seen in ages – The Big Short! OMG it was so good I already want to see it again. Ace performances from Steve Carell, Christian Bale (Oscar winning if ever there was, from both), Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, and one of my faves, Rafe Spall, memorable and funny as ever. And really really clever fast-paced directing which intersperses snippets of life in the mid-2000s as the housing crisis exploded and the world changed forever. Loved it. Of course, I worked in the financial industry for a few years and was in the middle of the crash, so it was especially poignant to me. Nine and a quarter out of ten – one of the highest ever.
Daisy Dog’s Drying Dilemma – if you’re a subscriber to my email newsletter, you’ll have been the first to see my lovely choccie labrador’s dilemma as she got a bit tangled in the towel! Soooo funny. Bless her. Plus I got a tweet this week that made me a bit star struck! That and a more in depth chat about what happened to me during the years working in finance, when I was away from QVC, and hence my interest in The Big Short here on my most recent home page update.
Do subscribe to my website newsletter on www.debbieflint.com and you’ll get first updates and exclusive news, pics and videos!
