Christmas is finally here!

Thriller‘There’s no business like showbusiness….’

I can’t remember the last time I went to the theatre and no sooner we hit Christmas than it’s going to be 3 shows in as many weeks. This week in Birmingham we were invited to Birmingham’s International Convention Centre for the opening night of Thriller Live. It’s now touring after being in the West End and quite frankly it was incredible! An incredible cast of the most energetic group of young dancers and singers took us through an array of songs by Michael Jackson & The Jackson Five. Austen and I were blown away! Thanks to the management of Town Hall Symphony Hall Birmingham for the invite.

I’ve been reading raves reviews about award-winning soul singer, fellow Midlands lass and my lovely pal, Beverly Knight. She’s playing the lead role of Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard Musical in the West End. We thought it was high time we went to see her alongside Tristan Gemmill at the Adelphi Theatre in London. The show’s based on the movie which starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. Needless to say we’re mega-excited. Take a look at the official trailer!

I’m hoping to fit in time to see ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ at the Birmingham Hippodrome too. Gok Wan’s playing The Man In The Mirror, in what is his first ever pantomime role. Do you remember when he came to see us on The Morning Show a few weeks ago to tell us about his new autobiography and cookbook? (On Waitlist) Even if you can’t see him in panto, I heard there’ll be a fly-on-the-wall documentary about his preparations for it all!

Are you planning to go and see any shows over Christmas and New Year? Let me know – get in touch here or on my Twitter or Facebook page!

Christmas treeWill you show me yours?

Austen put our Christmas tree out this week and it really does look magical. I’ve not been back to my home in Birmingham for a week, so when I first saw it the other night, it took my breath away.

Apart from a horrid trip to the dentists for a filling (booooooo!), the few days at home are going to be busy: we want to try and see lots of our family this side of Dec 25th, because we won’t see them all until the weekend after Christmas. That’s because I’m working most of next week at QVC (see dates below). Austen and I have booked into what looks like a very cosy hotel in London for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Lots of food, relaxing in the hotel health club and a few quiet drinks is right up our street. We’ve decided this year to donate money we would have spent on presents and cards to various charities which have a special meaning for us: BREAST CANCER CARE, AFRICAN-CARIBBEAN LEUKAEMIA TRUST, MARIE CURIE and CANCER RESEARCH will all benefit.

We’re seeing the New Year in with a group of friends- we got invite to see them back in the summer (they are so organised!) How will you be spending this Christmas? Don’t forget to send me a pic of your Christmas tree!

Here's a quick festive message.

Shepherd Neame Christmas AleFancy a beer?

I’ve compiled my list of Top Five Festive Beers. All are really tasty, so do try and find at least one to try over your Christmas holiday time. One of them is the totally awesome Christmas Ale by Shepherd Neame. It’s rich and fruity like the sultanas and dates you might have soaked for your Christmas cake! So it’s sweet and warming in the perfect way that an ale for this time of year should be! At 7% strength, it’s a tad strong, so do please sip it gently! I actually like it as an indulgent drink to enjoy after a big meal: it’s robust and is a real delight from one of Britain’s oldest breweries.

    Hi Marverine,
I just wanted to you and Austen a very Happy Christmas! It sounds like you’re having a really busy time at the mo but I hope you both get a chance to relax, enjoy and as your video says, have a Champagne or Beer! Back in my student days, I used to really enjoy Shepherd Neame beer – so I hope people follow your recommendation, in moderation of course!
You take care, you are a warm and welcome addition to QVC and not being on Twitter or Facebook, I enjoy your blogs as I can keep up with all your comings and goings!
Last but not least, I am delighted to hear that you will be getting a kitten in 2014 – I love cats and am working on my partner Ian to get a cat at some point! I know how much Conkers is missed by you both.
    Lots of love,
    Beth XX.

HI Beth, how was your Christmas? I hope you had a relaxing time and some fun with family & friends? Mine was aok – apart from battling with a cheeky cold that tried to upset the applecart!
Fab to hear you like the occasional beer. Oh yes Shepheard Neame make a whole host of very tasty beers indeed. Isn’t it brilliant that this British company has been going for over a hundred years? Some people forget that brewing is one of Britains great industries.
Keep working on Ian for the cat! LOL! I’m posting a new blog in the next few days and I can reveal I have a new cat – of sorts!! All will be revealed! Thanks so much for commenting. Stay in touch xxx

    Hi Marverine,
We had a lovely Christmas thank you, spent at my sister-in-law’s house – there was 11 of us and lots of laughter. I do hope you had a nice time in spite of a rotten cold. The beer I used to really like was “Hurlimans” – think it’s spelt like that and it was a Shepherd Neame one and it was delicious! I am now teetotal but am still very good at choosing wines for people – so I still have an interest in alcohol!
The good news is that yes, it looks likely we may be adopting a rescue cat soon! I am delighted to hear you have a new cat “of sorts” – I’m intrigued…
You take care and a very Happy and Healthy 2014 to you and Austen,
    Beth XXX.
