I’m super excited that beer is coming back to QVC this Christmas. We’ve got some fabulous little collections coming up that are going to make you a favourite in your house, especially if you’ve got a partner, a son or a nephew who loves Britain’s national drink. Of course, you might be a beer-loving lady like me! What we’re offering next week on QVC are some nifty ideas for beers to give as a prezzie or to keep in the house and have fun with. Did you know that history points to the fact that women INVENTED beer???
And did you know that beer makes a fantastic accompaniment with food? Back in Victorian times, beer was the drink of choice to have with dinner. I like a light golden ale with my fish and chip supper, or a lovely strong dark malty bitter with a Steak and Ale pie. I even converted TV chef Angela about beer and food, matching some food from a London restaurant with my own choices. And even a dessert!!! Watch this:
There’s a rule of thumb with beers – so give it a try. It’s a little like the wine and food rule but I think beer works better with food because it’s nowhere near as strong as wine. Beer is an average of 5% – some go up to 10% but then your average wine is usually 13% ABV. For me wine drowns out the nuances of a food because of its alcoholic strength.
Lighter, less spicy foods like fish dishes, salads, roast chicken dinners and pork belly will go well with a citrusy golden ale or a German pilsner. Try out the lager on the left from the Brewhive Box.
Richer dishes with dark meats, like beef pies, or stews, a steak or a burger would go well with some darker, stronger and sweeter like a best bitter, a stout or a mild (called Mild because it’s LESS bitter in flavour) – try the English Endeavour IPA – brewed with crystal malts to give the beer a slightly sweeter edge and balancing the bitterness.
My love affair with beer started 5 years ago. I’m one of Britain’s leading female experts when it comes to beer, see some examples here. I’ve done some fun beer tastings on the TV with some of the most famous names on TV, like Holly and Phil off This Morning. Tune in at 8pm on Monday 12 October to see Brewhive in action on QVC.
And if you’re a crafter do please join me because Anna Griffin will be back over from the US showing us some terrific ideas on making your own Christmas gifts, cards and present ideas for the Winter season. Always so exciting to see her and she’s made me start to think about whether or not I do something differently this year – make my own or give my money to a card shop where the selections aren’t that great, and they are far from unique or individual. Keep your eyes posted on her facebook page for updates of her visit next week and also her delightful website:
