Ignite the light
With 4th of July celebrations happening across the pond, we thought it would be nice to find out what someone from our QVC family gets up to over this long weekend. Michelle Epps from Bethlehem Lights and Bella Notte shares how she celebrates with her family…
In America this weekend everyone is gearing up for a fun, long weekend of summertime entertainment. July 4th is such a wonderful holiday because summer is in full swing, the work week is short, and there is so much to do with family and friends. You can find a party or barbecue happening in every backyard. Fireworks are flying every night, and in every town, there are families playing games, children catching lightning bugs, parties and parades and town fairs, but best of all everyone is in a good mood and spirits are high.
While we love to have fun, and enjoy the parties and events that take place over the 4th of July weekend, I don’t ever want to lose sight of why we have so much to celebrate. My PopPop, a WWII veteran is 95 years old this summer, and on the 4th of July, I think of him. If it were not for my PopPop, and other brave and great men and women like him, America would not be where it is today, and we would not have the opportunities that we have. So thank you!
That’s my PopPop (the passenger pictured above) riding in the Memorial Day Parade this year! Isn’t he adorable?
My husband, Miles and I love to entertain, so we will spend some of the weekend with friends on our deck, swimming in the pool, and then we will end the weekend down at the beach with my family (on the Jersey Shore) YES, we will pack as much into this weekend as physically possible! No matter where you go, or who you spend 4th of July with, you are sure to see LOTS and LOTS of red, white and blue, from clothing and decorations to all of the food. My children have been dressing in red, white and blue ALL week at camp.
I like things to be pretty, and I like things that are easy to do! My absolute favorite resource for SIMPLE and festive entertaining is Pinterest! Check out this super cute, and super EASY fruit dish! I think the kids can even help with this one! And a little something for the grown ups! Sangria, is my ultimate summertime/4th of July drink!
When it comes to entertaining outside and late evenings with friends, I can’t do it without lighting. Candles and lights are such an easy and effective way to set the mood. My house is filled with candles, and the outside is filled with lights.I decorate with lights ALL year, and in the summertime, I especially love the Bethlehem Lights Globe Lights – they are fun and super festive.
I currently have them strung up on my screened-in porch. Check them out in the background during the early evening. Later that night, we went into the screened in porch (the bugs got pretty bad) and they added so much ambiance. It was great! We didn’t need any other light except for the light strands, and seriously I felt like I was sitting in a cafe in Europe, Not Westchester, PA!!
My everyday favorites are the clear bulbs that I have hanging up, but we are going to the beach this weekend, and I am bringing our new lights to hang up for the 4th of July celebration – the Bethlehem Lights Edison style lights in BLUE! So cool and unique and simple! I plan on stringing them all along the railing of my mom’s porch!
On July 4th, you have to set your table, with stars and stripes and red, white and blue (are you starting to see the consistency of the colors?!) When it comes to setting the table, it doesn’t take a lot of effort to make it look super cute, and festive! I am seriously grateful for candles, and lanterns, I use them in bulk for decorating. Lighting is key!
As I’m sure you can appreciate, our lives are crazy enough without making decorating difficult. I know I don’t have a lot of time to spend, decorating, but I do love making my house look pretty and festive, soooo just like my cooking, I want to get great rewards, for minimal effort!!! Welcome the lantern!! Here is a quick table setting I put together. I used a Bethlehem Lights cathedral lantern and one of my own taller lanterns, that I filled with red, white and blue star decorations, and Bethlehem Lights wire lights!! All you do is stick them in the lantern and turn them on!! Simple, and fast and adorable!
Bella Notte also has some really great pieces that are decorative and provide light – like this Metal Scroll Lantern or the recent Bella Notte TSV lantern (I have the ivory and bronze in my house) which really fits any decor. I also use these lanterns to decorate the front of my house. It’s great, because, I’m not very good at keeping real flowers alive, so colorful lanterns are a great alternative for me!
No 4th of July festivity is complete with out a parade! My family (and millions of others) will be heading to the shore this weekend. This is Bailey my daughter getting ready for last year’s 4th of July bike parade! It was rather mild, but wait till you see her outfit for this year’s parade.
She is a year older, and a lot more creative and over the top when it comes to her ensembles! I’ll be sure to post some pictures. I wish I had a photo of her bike to share….and yes; there are lights on her wheels!
No matter how we choose to celebrate, it’s about being with the people you love, enjoying the space you are in, and GREAT Fireworks!!!! We will enjoy fireworks on the beach Saturday, with the thousands of people that will bring chairs down to the beach and set up blankets, and wait for the spectacular fireworks display. There is that lighting again… now it will decorate the sky! Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks so much for reading my blog!!
