Axel and Debbie

CBBC 30 years on and Ali Young loses it with Axel!

18

This week –

  • Funniest blooper with Axel Rose and Ali Young
  • In the broom cupboard with Phillip Schofield – clips of me on CBBC from 1986
  • Really exciting week ahead inc sneaky peeks of Alpha-H, Gatineau, Antthony, Liz Claibourne and more.
  • Kara Tointon smells like me! Lol.
  • and Debbie Does Dinner – in batches – including quite a surprise.

Loved chatting to Axel this week during his TSV (all-day bargain) day – he was still laughing about Alison Young mishearing him during her show – see the blooper below! Silly Ali! Was V funny though. His Flora Mare (pronounced ‘mah-ray,’ but he told me he doesn’t really mind what people call it) skincare went down a treat – more online if you’d like to try the range, eg get the 204710 Tightening serum – really highly rated on the reviews. And see below for a One Time Only slot for your diary with Axel!

And stop press – stand by for my big Spring competition NEXT WEEK plus, if I’m allowed to tell you by then, news of a big trip for me… #exciting!

Meanwhile this week…

Went to the Opera… er, Ballet!

Theatre

Thought I was going to the opera this week, turns out it was the ballet version of Eugene Onegin. No, not ‘one gin … and tonic’ or ‘five gins’ haha very original, not! It was a TiFFT for me* since I’ve not ‘done’ a big London ballet before – and it was only possible cos we managed to get £15 tickets up in the gods – was fine though – you had a great view of the orchestra and heard every note, plus were only ten rows away from the front, albeit several storeys high! lol!

Went with bruv and sis and mum. Now Bruvva loves ballet and opera and this fab production made me decide that I prefer ballet to opera – never thought I would. You just don’t know till you try things, do you?! Had another TiFFT* on the way there too – walking up fifteen storeys or 197 steps at the tube!

Underground steps

We decided not to wait in rush hour crowds for the lift at Covent Garden Station and took this pic near the top – only stopped twice, which bodes well for getting in training for my ‘Moonwalk’ in May with Jackie Kabler and the QVC girls. This wasn’t quite 39 steps but nearly! lol!

Had a lovely meal before the production in the Royal Opera House restaurant and there you can keep your table and keep coming back in the intervals – there were two in this performance, which was weird and was also a first, in my (limited! uncultured!) experience!

Sears

Very good enjoyed it and if you can get the cheap seats and don’t mind hanging over the side to see what’s going on on your side of the stage every so often, give it a go! It made me book up to see more ballet but in the Odeon when they play the performances into cinemas. Which do you prefer – opera? Ballet? Or neither?

Debbie Does Dinner – Batch Cook!

Ok, so this week I needed to use up my ‘Hello Fresh’ hampers of ingredients so I cooked three lots of meals at once ready for the next few days and loved it! I think missus ‘can’t cook don’t cook’ here is finally turning a corner with all this creative culinary craft! Having heard from so many of my lovely ‘Back to You QVC’ gang on Facebook, doing our Three Month Challenge (3MCFeb is the page to ‘like’ if you want to join in too) many report cooking in batches so thought I would too.

Recipe clipping

First was the Sri Lankan Sweet Potato and Green Bean curry – OMG it was amazing – now, I don’t ‘do hot,’ can’t bear really spicy food, so best thing was, I scaled down the amount of curry powder – sorted! Gave myself, and the recipe, 8.75 out of ten.

Tarragon pasta

Then I did the most aromatic tarragon infused mushroom tagliatelle. It was really unusually aromatic. Had to add some veggies and cut way down on the pasta but at least I could pop it in a lock and lock for easy reheating in the saucepan (I don’t like the microwave unless I have to). Tasty – would prob do it again – 8 out of ten.

Thai curry

Then same thing again with the Thai panang curry with baby corn (to which I added sweet potato and some butternut squash to lighten it a bit). Reaally delicious, especially with water chestnuts. And a really surprising ingredient! (See below) Tasty – 8.5 out of ten. Funny thing tho’ – as I’ve been eating it afterwards, every mouthful takes me back to the audiobook I was listening to at the time – I eat a mouthful and get flashbacks of Jamie Fraser in 1773 Carolina from the Outlander series book 6! Isn’t it funny how the brain works! (See RiWiSi below.)

All in all it was a useful exercise and I found myself getting less tense about getting it all wrong. Well you can’t really get it that wrong as all the ingredients come already measured! Maybe it’ll make a cook out of me yet! More next week.

Children’s BBC Nostalgia – Broom Cupboard website interview

Broom cupboard

Well Greg the website owner editor finally added all the extra links and pics to his feature about when I was the first girl in the Children’s BBC broom cupboard, first stand-in for Phillip Schofield, in the mid 80’s. Be warned – video links alert!

It really took me back, answering all Greg’s questions, and it made me remember how different things were back then. No email, no website, everything was post-only, and just four channels to choose from. If you were a kid and you weren’t out playing, you either watched Children’s ITV or Children’s BBC – which, for two months total in 1986, was me! Here’s the link so you can go read it too – do leave a comment there.

Do you recall me being on? I was the one many people said ‘I wondered where she went!’ The main answer was – off to have my Bradley! Lol. Tons of other info about what I did after that too, do go have a read. And be prepared for some really cringey youtube clips – so bad they actually hurt – you have been warned! LOL. click here to read all about my time presenting Children’s BBC in ‘80s.

Blooper Alison Young’s PICK of the month and as promised above, here’s Ali finding it funny when Axel Ruth discussed neck and DEC cream! Haha! First here’s Ali’s classic –

And here’s Ali losing it, live, once more! Love it! BTW – Flora Mare fans, do grab that remote control at 9pm on Friday (6th) – this dynamic duo are back and Axel’s got a one time only!

SNIPPETS

Audio book

Book of the week – another Diana Gabaldon and it’s fab – as ever. ‘A Breath of Snow and Ashes’ is the 6th in the series and this audiobook is a whopping 57 hours long! All for one audible credit – am well happy! Love listening on my long journeys! More on my ‘RiWiSi’ Read it Write it Sell it blog on my website, where you’ll also see links about this week’s World Book Day, take the test on confusing words explained – how many do you know? And how to go see Diana doing a talk in Oxford on 22nd. And the latest about my first book with publisher Choc Lit – they’re changing the cover and title of Hawaiian Affair now I’ve revamped it somewhat! Click here to find out more on RiWiSi.

Debbie and Lauren

Shop till we pop Well, not quite, as I never ‘pop’ nowadays, with Freedom Eating! But had a great Saturday afternoon lunch in Wagamama’s then shopping with my lovely girl in Guildford, even though it was cold and damp. We spent our Xmas vouchers and I booked an Aveda massage – which I had on Wed afternoon – gosh it was lovely! Nothing like a bit of daughter time – going to see Brad for his belated birthday get together on Monday too! Lucky mummy!

Cha cha

Back to You/ 3MCFeb update Was lovely to welcome Ali Keenan and Ultrasun Abi as well as Bruce on to this week’s Monday night webchat between 8-9pm. Read when the April TSV is for Ultrasun and what’s in it! And what six products does Ali K use to get her hair looking so great, on my weekly Back to You blog on my website. There, you’ll also find how one lady helped herself quit sugar with a scary statistic – easy to do though, if you need help! Plus – the lard test! Can you do it too? More here.

Want to take part in 3MCFeb? It’s not too late!

And thanks so much to ‘Pearly Petal’ who has had such success using my Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 book (click here for 704285 on qvc) that she’s put this lovely review up –

“What a fabulous book this is! I needed to lose about a stone and a half to get back to my ideal weight, so 4 weeks ago I bought Debbie’s book. It has changed my eating habits. Turned them upside down, as I was a choccy sugar fanatic. Anything sweet and I would be there. That was until I read 1-6 in the book! I watched the video on sugar, and that had an effect on me I could never have imagined. Eating the way Debbie states, I have lost 10lbs in weight and along with the body blade I feel so much better not to mention looking good too. Cannot thank Debbie enough, so if you’re on the fence about this book, just try it and see. You have nothing to lose, only weight! ”

Walk the walk

Moonwalk ahoy! Well our training plans have arrived and it means having to get used to walking longer and longer distances in the run up to this annual Breast Cancer Care event, walking the length of a marathon on closed London roads for 6-7 hours through the night on 15th May. Jackie is our team leader and she’s already set up the sponsorship page – do go sponsor us if you are the sort of person that likes to do that sort of thing straight away so it’s done! it’s here.

It’s a charity I like to support due to friends having been touched by it but clearly I don’t publicly boast about the amounts I donate behind the scenes, preferring to stay anonymous – naturally! I have a plan for the ‘getting fit’ part of this event though – get a ‘treadmill desk’ – then I can walk my way to being ready for the marathon night walk, and continue writing my next novel, ‘French or Dutch,’ can’t I!

Clarks shoes

Frowback Friday – remember these? We all had them, didn’t we? Mine were always so wide – I had hobbit feet even back then!

Antthony dredlocks

Antthony’s Frowback pic! He’s back beginning of the week (11th/12th) – see below for his TSV bargain! – and here’s a funny he posted reminding us of what he called his ‘rasta days’ – miss him hugely and am looking forward to an exciting midnight show next week!

Thai basil

Thai Basil – it smells weird! But surprisingly ‘good weird.’ Ever used it? I didn’t even know it existed! Smelled a little of basil with a hint of liquorice! It was in one of the dishes this week – just shows you what’s out there doesn’t it! Another TiFFT*! Albeit a teensy tiny one, it still counts! What have you done this month, for the very first time? Do leave me a comment below.

Kara Tointon

Kara Tointon smells like me! The Mr Selfridge actress this week said in ‘New’ mag that Liz Earle’s Number 15, my fave, is her top perfume too! Now you know what she smells like – me! haha! No, it’ll be different on everyone, that’s why I love it. Go here to get some, still available in a bundle with a lip gloss!

Chicken

Facebook Funny –  after all the furore and fuss over ‘is the dress white and gold or blue and black’ online this week – this summed up the futility brilliantly! Funny!

Watch – The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Some say it’s better than the first, some say it’s as good, some slightly less so. But whatever it is, it has a very hot Richard Gere in it. Yes, even at  65 – as Celia Imrie’s character says – well, you would would you! lol! A great 8.75 out of ten from me! Do go see it! Just lost a little ‘cos of Dev Patel’s character being slightly two dimensional and a bit annoying but the cast is outstanding so gains for that too – and for Richard Gere! I hope there’s a third!

Sneaky Peek! The Vitamix is back! Sunday 15th all day! You know what that means! And as his ‘Bodyblade QVC’ facebook group hits 1,000 members, Bruce is due back on air end March – so the Bodyblade will be back in stock just before that weekend, 27/28th – don’t miss it!

Shhh! Alpha H fans? Put Wed 11th at 10pm in your diary with Tom, Michelle and me for a superb value ‘one show only type bargain!’ Shhhh!

This week’s QVC Highlights –
Doll 10

Doris is back! The excitement mounts, including on my Back to You QVC facebook group – where Doris and her makeup range is loved! Friday (6th) 8pm! (followed by that Flora Mare OTO in the 9pm show with Ali Young – you have been warned!)

It solved a prob with Daisy’s ear too – very happy doggy! click here to get your pet sorted. I thought this was a funny shot when Jules was on with it last time – it looks like Maisy the dog has a hat on!

Molton Brown is back with Charlie on Monday at 9pm, and if you love gems, don’t miss our two 3-hour specials at 7pm on both Tuesday and Wednesday – an unusual three hour show presented buy different presenters and guests, featuring ammolite, tanzanite and me with lovely Mark Walker at 8pm Tues for ‘master cut gemstone jewellery’ – fascinating!

Another fun packed and informative blog Debbie. You must have so much energy to keep this pace up. Loved seeing the bloopers again even after watching them live, still hilarious. I tried Basil for the first time in a lentil bake that Julia put on her blog but I didn’t realise I could buy just the leaves, so when I saw a basil plant I bought it and picked 12 leaves off it (as per recipe) Derr !!!!!. Needless to say the plant died after a few days in my cold kitchen. I’ve only ever been to one ballet /opera with my Dad in the 60s (Flower Drum Song) and vowed never again so I expect I have missed out a lot from that one unenjoyable experience.
Love the picture of dear Antthony and his dreadlocks and looking forward to his next visit as I am all of the forthcoming guests in March
Enjoy time with Bradley and your trip up the Thames won’t you.
    Take care Debs. xxxx

Hi Debs so glad you posted the video of Ali with Axel, got a few days off and managed to see it live. Her giggles were contagious! I loved the look he gave her when he realised what she thought he’d said. Shortly after you said you’d have to post a clip so I popped by to savour another piece of QVC gold!

Ballet or Opera? My Auntie and Uncle used to take me and my sister to see operas when we were younger. Loved the costumes and listening to the orchestra play live made the hair at the back of my head stand on end – absolutely wonderful. As I can’t sing for toffee and studied ballet from when I was three until going to Uni, my favourite has to be ballet. I went to Russia on a school trip when I was fourteen (back in ’79) and saw the Bolshoi perform in the Kremlin Palace as their theatre was being renovated. Either way, I’m sure you’ll agree, both are a great night out.

I love the piccie of Antthony you posted, he was (and is!) so handsome. I’ve not seen him on QVC for a while so will keep a lookout. I might open a bottle of Pouilly Fume (our current favourite weekend tipple) and drink a glass to his health. That reminds me, going to watch the Gatineau TSV in a bit, if I pop a bottle in the fridge now it will be chilled in time. Supposed to be for Sunday lunch but I doubt my darling man will notice a glass missing!

Have a fab weekend Dabs, take care

Hi Debbie, just bought your book and read every night. I’ve almost given up eating bread ( apart from 2 slices wholemeal granary bread with marmalade in the cafe on the seafront after dog walking on the beach every Saturday) and reduced carb intake. I have been a dieter since the age of 15, bullied at school but played sport and county hockey so I was fit… went to slimming clubs from that age and Remember putting on 2 lbs at Slimming Magazine club and getting a pink pig to take home for being Pig of the Week!!
I have been on every diet possible, losing 3 Sones then putting 2 back, beating myself up about it etc..we’ve all been there!! Whilst the genetics of my family dictate that the females are all curvy women I am now feeling that at 49… well in three weeks I am… I must take control. I am only eating when I want which can be difficult with a family but always eat together on Sunday with a roast. I am more more conscious of what I eat and my food savior is plain rice cakes and marmite! I have several stones to lose but am not going to set unreachable expectations as I have done in the past and fail. I’ve lost 6 lbs in three weeks and am awaiting the body blade stock..my birthday is 26 March and my birthday pressie to me is a body blade. I am not on Facebook so I hope you don’t mind me blogging. Thank you for the knowledge I have learnt so far. Love Mary x

    Fabulously informative as always.
Love the blooper about a blooper(at the top of the blog). Axel has had a surname change – guess you were giggling so much at Ali Young’s laughter moment. I suppose you could say that Flora Mare’s first UK T.S.V. ROSE to the occasion and the sales went through the RUTH.

I moaned about not having received TTFLS – and now I need to start reading it again. I had the previous edition and it really inspired me. I have lost weight and inches over the past four months. However, I’ve been a bit complacent for the past couple of weeks although I have kept the exercise up with walking, swimming and the Bodyblade. Another couple of chapters of TTFLS and I should lose the last 10 lbs or so to get me to my desired weight and a weight that I hope my doctor will be happy with! I’ll still be slightly ‘overweight’ instead of the ‘obese’ which I was when I started, but that’s ok. It’s what I look like and my altered attitude to food these days that is so much more important than forever dieting! Thank you TTFLS and Bodyblade – and Debbie Flint.

oh I’m soooo glad it’s helping – you know what it’s like with these systems – it’s all very well reading about yet another new one, but it’s giving it a try and finding something you can stick at, right? Well we’re not perfect and yes we can easily go back to it when we need to. I use the 80/20 rule – long as it’s a ‘mostly’ not an ‘occasionally’!
