Can anyone recommend a good exercise class?

Oh dear, I'm feeling a bit stiff this morning as I went to a step class yesterday!! I didn't know step classes were still around and having rejoined a gym in December I thought that once a month is better than nothing and so took myself along.
I used to do step classes religiously every night when I lived in Amsterdam in the mid '90s – it was so weird doing it again!! Firstly we were doing it in English so now I know what all the steps are called (don't ask how I followed it in Dutch!!) and secondly, it took me back by at least 12 years and I had this strange déjà vu feeling all the way through!

I think I giggled most of the way through actually as my co-ordination was a bit iffy to say the least!! I'd never make a dancer, I have rhythm but not the best bodily co-ordination!
They say spinning is a good class to do too  – but they play the music so loud!!!… OH GOSH I AM SOUNDING LIKE MY MOTHER!!!! (That's it, I'm not speaking any longer!! How does that happen? When do we turn into our parents?)
Anyway, can anyone honestly recommend spinning?? And please don’t tell me swimming is good exercise, I get bored stiff!!!

Love Pipa x

I also need to get back into the routine of attending classes at my local gym, now that the evenings are staying lighter I have no excuse really!
I sometimes do a body balance class which is a combination of pilates, yoga, tai chi. At first i found it really hard and couldnt move the next day without being in agony however I stuck with it and by the second or third visit I had really got the hang of it.
I have avoided spinning classes- it looks far too energetic for me!! Swimming is great after a workout to relax.
Pippa- I have a question which I would be really grateful if you can answer- where did you get the scarf/shawl from that you were wearing tonight on the Jackie Kennedy jewellery show. It was the stripey purple orange and white tie dye effect one. It looks lovely and would love to know where you got it from.
Good luck with the step classes!

    Hi Pipa,
I’m not an expert on exercising, but I do like Pilates and my rock-n-roller. I prefer to exercise inside (out of the pollen and pollution and has the side effect of not showing off all my wobbly bits to those more toned than me!) But I think I can tell you when we start turning in to our parents – it’s around the time the hot young lad calls you ‘miss’ and the child on the bus asks about ‘that lady’! It’s horrible, isn’t it? But then again – there’s always someone older who calls you young lass! And remember, we only want them to turn the music down so that we can have an intelligent conversation!

Hi Pip – I’ve never managed an exercise class – always sounds like too much hard work, besides I always maintain running around after toddlers is enough exercise for anyone! I took up a dance class just after Xmas, West coast swing, its fab! – little like salsa but not! It’s not that complicated to follow (if I can do it anyone can!) and after a few weeks I fit back in my size 8’s again, not bad! I think the key is finding something you enjoy.
As for sounding like your mother…I know! – kick myself so many times for sounding exactly like mine, but it seems to be an invetitable legacy!
Take care, Ellie and 3 small mad people x

    Hello ladies!!
Thanks for all the replies – you equally make me laugh!
Ellie I’m totally with you re keeping fit running after the kiddies – although you have three which must reeeally keep your head spinning! Now that mine don’t need carrying everywhere and now that we have moved out of London (where I used to walk everywhere!) I find I’m fit but not strong – so maybe some body building!! Ha ha!! I just need to get back on my pilates machine more like Martin said – Ellie it’s lovely to hear from you x x
Anthea, I am LIVING in that scarf at the moment as I LOVE IT!!! It isn’t QVC product however you will be glad to know that later this year we are launching a new range of incredibly beautiful scarves just like it (I can’t tell you anything else right now, but it is a designer who you all love behind them!!). Email me if you want further info on mine though.
    Have a great weekend x x

    Hi Pippa.
If you ever get a chance, try Body Pump. It’s a weights class, with no co-ordination required! I am not a fan of dancey classes, so this is right up my street. It takes you through the basic exercises with dumbells, barbells and hand weights (to music). You chose your own plates, so you are not expected to be lifting heavy weights straight away! It makes you ache the day after, but 2 or 3 sessions a week will make you super toned and mega fit!!

    Hi Pippa
Try Zumba fitness (with optional dumbells). A hip-hop/salsa type of exercise to do at home. Such good fun, just look on their website at the demo. You can also do it with your children they will love it too.
