Births, marriages and deaths

My week started off with the sad news that my uncle had died after battling cancer. He was my Dad's younger brother and the last of that generation of the family. He was very kind to me and my family at Dad's funeral and made a particular impression on my daughter Sophie; he'll be sorely missed.

Then only five days later another tragic death in the family – his son Tim, a couple of years my junior and seemingly fit and healthy. It was a dreadful shock for all of us.

But I was reminded that life goes on when just a couple of hours later I had a message from Keeley Aydin, our Elemis guest, to say that she'd just given birth to a son. I'm so pleased for her, and I just know she's going to be a brilliant mum. She even sent me a photo of him – he's a real cutie and I'm itching for a cuddle! She thought he might be born on my birthday (the 10th) but he was far too impatient!

Incidentally, thanks for all the lovely cards you've sent me, I'll drop you all a line individually if you send in your addresses to me. I had most of my birthday off, but I did come in to work for the launch of the Butler & Wilson TSV – how could I miss that?!! Simon Wilson's one of my favourite guests and I'm really looking forward to his 40th anniversary shows on the 12th and 13th of August. He'll be bringing his new book to QVC then too; I've seen it and it's a fantastic pictoral extravaganza – I know you'll all love it!

So that just leaves the marriages. You'll have heard me mention that I'm off to Scotland for my niece Rachel's wedding. Her betrothed is a Highlander, so all the men in his family will be wearing kilts… I hope it's not too windy on the day! The setting sounds very romantic, and I'll try to post some photos of the big day when I get back. I wonder, were any of you married in exotic locations? Do let me know.

See you all when I'm back,
Julia. xx.

Hi julia thought i would let you know I got married in bali indonesia in june 1995. It was the most romantic place and we had a wonderful day. We had enjoyed listeningto the hotel band during our stay and they played many of our requests, including lots of rolling stone numbers, some of my husabnds favourites. We nicknamed them the bali stones! They were asked to play at our wedding and neither my husband or i knew before we arrived for the ceremony and they didn’t know it was for us. They played a song which sounded beautiful and we asked them to sing it again when we next saw them thinking it was a traditional bali song – only it was the hawaiaan wedding song by andy williams !!

Hello girls, thought I’d reply quickly as I’m off to Spain for a couple of weeks in the morning, and I didn’t want you to think I was ignoring you!!
You lucky girl Lorraine, I’ve always wanted to go to Bali – maybe one day I’ll manage it. That sounds the kind of wedding I would like, I’m a bit of a beach bunny. How funny about the Andy Williams song – Moon River is one of my favourites that he did.
Hi Margaret, the wedding was beautiful. It was a bit touch and go with the weather, it had rained heavily in the morning, but my niece insisted the ceremony should take place outside and the sun came out to grace the event. Did I ever mention my Mum and Dad used to live on the Isle of Skye? They lived north of Portree in a little hamlet called Culnacnoc, near Staffin. They had a croft, and kept goats!!! I think it may have been a bit of a mid life crisis for my Mum. They would have stayed there I think, but for the distance from us children as they got older. Am away until July 1st so I’ll see you then
    much love
    Julia xx

    Hi Julia
hope you have a nice time in Spain and sorry to hear of your recent losses. I think I heard on one of your shows you have a property in Spain. We’ve just sold our bungalow over there as we weren’t getting the use out of it. Which part is your property in? We don’t have any regrets selling it but a word of warning-keep an eye on your Bank Account over there, the Spanish have a habit of taking money from your account and have no real explanation for it!
As for Weddings-well I should be preparing for my Daughter’s now but unfortunately she called it off last August!

Hi Julia, So sorry to hear about your sad loss. I have been with qvc for eleven and a half years and this is the first thing I have written but just felt the need to say I was thinking of you and your family. I’m not sure what it is about qvc that makes it feel like a big family when I say that to people they think its crazy because its just a shopping chanel but whatever the strange phenomenon is it can’t be a bad thing that connects people around the country.
    Have a lovely holiday.
    Love and best wishes Sandra

I got married in 2005 in Malcesine Castle on Lake Garda, Italy. It was an amazing venue. We were their last wedding of that year and the ceremony was performed in Italian by the Mayor. We both wore purple outfits just to be different and I also had a lovely silver butterfly necklace and my Arezzo bracelet(continuing the Italian theme) from QVC. It was a big deal for me to go to Italy to marry as I have a real fear of flying and had to take medication to help so it was an achievement for me. Neither of us had been to Italy before but saw the castle online and fell in love with it. My Dad said it was the most hassle free wedding he’s ever been to.

Can you advise me I have naturally curly like yourself and I have just ordered some GHD Stylers, I understand you also use them, how is it best to use them, do you straighten your hair first or do you leave your hair curly and curl it from there. I would be grateful for your advice

    Hello Julie
Yes I had a good time in Spain – we are in the Northern Costa Blanca – a bit like Cornwall with a bit more sunshine. Fortunately all our dealings with the Spanish bank have been very straight forward. Sorry to hear about your daughter calling her wedding off, but she must have had her reasons, and at least she didn’t wait until ‘the big day’!!
    speak soon

    Hi Sandra
Thanks for thinking of us all at what was a very difficult time – I think the wedding helped us all to realise that life goes on. So good to know that you are still watching us after 11 1/2 years! I had a good break, but it’s nice to be back.
Hello San(dra) – I thought I was seeing double! Wow, you’ve been with us for even longer! I am not sure whether we are still going to be doing Markon shoes – shame really as I really liked them. As I already mentioned I had a good holiday, and actually I really needed it, so thanks for wishing me well, and to you too Steven.
Tracey your wedding location sounds amazing! Italian is such a romantic language isn’t it? I’m pleased your were wearing some QVC jewellery too – well done you for being so brave.
HI MAMIE!!! – fancy hearing from you on this format!! Thanks for the gorgeous card – they are all still up in my dressing room as I haven’t been there much to admire them. Looking forward to the Butler and Wilson World shows on Friday ……… I think the ‘naughty corner’ is a great idea!! We enjoyed the wedding but spent rather longer at Edinburgh airport than I would have liked ……… our flight was delayed!
Hello Eileen, sorry to hear about your back – hope you’re on the mend now??
Hi Jackie, I’m glad you got the GHD’s, I think they’re excellent. Personally I like to blow dry my hair first and use the GHD’s to smooth and style my hair BUT if I’m in a real rush and I’ve let my hair dry naturally I have taken it from curly to straight without blow drying – the trick is to do it in small sections and use a thermal protector for your hair. Hope that helps?
Speak soon girls ( and Steven)

Hi Julia, really enjoyed the shows you did with Simon Wilson for his 40th. One show I’ve been looking out for is the one you usually do before Christmas with Molton Brown – what’s happened?

    Hello Pauline
Sorry I’ve only just spotted this post and we’re in a new year now!!! So glad you enjoyed the Butler and Wilson 40th Anniversary shows.
We haven’t actually had Molton Brown on QVC for around 2 years …………. a real shame as I used to really enjoy those shows too – and we do miss Jill Goldsmith!
Hope you had a lovely Christmas
