Hubby and Marverine in Paphos

Birthday fun and live music!

3

How are you? I’ve had a busy month of July and August – it’s been a bit slow on the blog because of family illness and a bereavement in my extended family, which naturally would draw you away from writing and connecting with people for a while to reflect on things. But I’m back.

I do hope you’re well, and you’re enjoying some new goodies from QVC. Austen and I managed to sneak away for our birthdays at the end of August for a cheeky week in Cyprus.

Balcony viewGigsWe basically lounged around in the 40 degree heat of Paphos at the Hotel Atlantica Golden Beach – we really couldn’t fault it. Fabulous food, drinks, laughs, and superb entertainment by all the young energetic and enthusiastic boys and girls from the Thomson Gold team. Five stars.

As soon as I got back we got invites to two gigs in Birmingham in one night! Eeek! The Wholls are a fab new indie guitar band with a difference – if you or anyone you know likes The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, then The Wholls sound a bit like them but with some Dizzy Rascal rapping attitude and amazing musicians – I can see this four-piece band going a long long way. Take a look at their website: http://www.thewholls.com/

Then we scooted off up to Kings Heath to an amazing live venue called The Hare and Hounds. We watched Roland Gift. Remember him from the Fine Young Cannibals? Well he and his band brought the house down and played all the old faves and chart hits, as well as new songs.

It really was a treat to get up close to him in such a small venue. He was happy to be back in Brum, where he was born! And WOW he’s aged well. In the words of Louie Spence ‘still got it, never lost it’. Roland also joked with the crowd in-between tracks. And it was a thrill to see my pal and funnyman John Simmit as the super-funny support act!

    Hi Marverine,
Welcome back! It looks like you both had a lovely holiday, the view of the ocean from your hotel is superb! It’s a really nice photo of you two. A belated Happy Birthday to the both of you XX.
I’m sorry to hear about you having to deal with family illness and bereavement – it’s vital to take a step back from day-to-day life and to have time to heal.
On a lighter note, I’ve always really loved Roland Gift’s voice and I was a college student in the late-80s when the Fine Young Cannibals had their hit album. Delighted to hear he’s still performing – I hadn’t realised he’s a Brummie. For some reason, I don’t think I’ve heard him being interviewed. As I’m writing this, Deacon Blue are on the t.v. so all the good ones are still around :)
I look forward to catching you on the QVC screen this weekend,
    Lots of love,
    Beth XXX

HI Beth, so fab to hear from you! thanks for the email, yes it’s been a tricky time and in times like that you can’t always keep up with the emails and blogs and so on because other things take over. I do appreciate your message of well-being to me. How are you? What have you been up to lately?
As for Roland – he was incredible! WishI’d got chance to say HI after he came offstage, but I swear he was absolutely MOBBED by the crowd! I used to love Deacon Blue in the 80s – I was a huge fan in the 1990s – Dignity was my favourite song of theirs! I found the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsr9HCOgQe0

    Hi Marv,
You don’t need to explain! At one point, I did wonder if you were/are leaving QVC but I know you’re a very busy lady.
All’s well with Ian and I thanks. I now have 2 part-time jobs, one at the Community Centre and the other doing Breakfast Clubs at a local school. I’m really enjoying them and can walk to both places so getting fit too! Thanks for putting the Deacon Blue video on your blog – enjoyed it. XXX
