It was my first day back at QVC yesterday, after an almost three week break, and I must say I felt really refreshed. I wasn’t away on holiday for the whole time, because I still had a lot of writing to do if I am going to make the April deadline for my next book.
The first week of my break was a writing blitz when I managed to do 15,000 words, by which time I was definitely ready for our trip to Barbados. We’d only booked this trip ten days previously; have I mentioned before I’m a bit of a ‘Last Minute Lulu’?!
The flight out was pretty good and, instead of partaking in the on-board entertainment, I took the opportunity to read through the new book from the start. Fortunately, it all makes sense! Chris had chosen the resort we were staying in, Turtle Beach on the south coast, and I have to say I was very impressed. Lovely location, nice beach and attentive staff, all you need for a relaxing holiday.
After we finished photographing the books, I decided to leave them in the hotel book case for people to borrow – less than an hour after leaving them there, they had all gone, much to the disappointment of Susan (pictured), a lady we had made friends with on our second day, as she wanted to read them.
All was not lost, she downloaded them to her Kindle and spent the rest of the holiday updating me on where she was in the story!
Luckily she was enjoying the books, as did the ladies who had initially borrowed them too. Another holiday-maker called Katy also managed to pick up ‘Life’s a Beach and Then…’ after it had been returned to the bookcase, because she had seen my tweet about them being there before she left the UK.
We had a lovely holiday, which included a trip to Crystal Cove resort, where Chris and I stayed nine years ago to celebrate our thirtieth anniversary of living together. It was quite a journey on the ‘boogie’ bus and I had forgotten just how many people the driver likes to cram on to the bus… sardines spring to mind!
I also got to hold a green monkey. One of the locals came to our beach every day with his pet monkey, Bruce, on a harness and lead. He was really cute, particularly when he spotted the Kipling furry monkey on my beach bag!
I am always mindful of taking care of my skin on holiday – mostly because I am scared of Alison Young – so I thought I would list the products I took with me that helped prevent me from doing too much damage to my skin:
- Ultrasun Pre-sun Optimiser – used for two weeks before we went away and every night after my shower
- Ultrasun Body Glimmer SPF50
- Ultrasun Face SPF50
If you saw me on-air yesterday, you will have seen that I still have a good colour despite the high SPF – so don’t be afraid of the high SPFs.
It was a shame I didn’t have the new Ultrasun SPF30 with the built-in tan activator, but it only launched yesterday on QVC. What a great idea for my next holiday – you can get one for your face and one for your body.
For my hair, I took a travel size of the Philip Kingsley Coconut Breeze Elasticiser (which was the beauty Product of the Month last month). It has now sold out in that fragrance, but you can still get the unfragranced litre size online.
Mindful of mosquitos, I took the Australian Bodycare Skinwash in French Lavender, with tea tree oil. I have kept it carefully hidden from ‘him indoors’ at home, but now he has discovered it I am clearly going to have to order more!
I seem to have passed the Alison Young scrutiny at work yesterday i.e. she didn’t tell me off for being too tanned!
Talking of beauty products, it’s time to announce the winner of my Elemis competition. We had over 800 entries, but there can only be one winner…
Congratulations to Jean Cairns who correctly stated that Keeley Aydin is our Elemis guest. Enjoy the products Jean.
So, having come back to work yesterday, I am now off for three days at a writing retreat near Bristol with Debbie Flint. I managed to write another 10,000 words while I was in Barbados, so only another 10,000 or so to go – which I hope to get done this weekend.
I didn’t write on the flight back as it was a night flight, instead, I watched two movies: ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ (which I thought was anything but!) and ‘Bridget Jones’ Baby’, which was very entertaining. I still haven’t been to see ‘LaLa Land’ – is it as good as the hype?
Have a great weekend and I’ll see you at 11am Monday morning and for the Lunchtime Show with Charlie, who I haven’t actually laid eyes on yet this year!
Check the blog on my website www.juliarobertsauthor.com at some point next week, when I will be revealing the cover of my new book.
