Beauty in my suitcase (and hand luggage)

30

It was my first day back at QVC yesterday, after an almost three week break, and I must say I felt really refreshed. I wasn’t away on holiday for the whole time, because I still had a lot of writing to do if I am going to make the April deadline for my next book.

The first week of my break was a writing blitz when I managed to do 15,000 words, by which time I was definitely ready for our trip to Barbados. We’d only booked this trip ten days previously; have I mentioned before I’m a bit of a ‘Last Minute Lulu’?!

The flight out was pretty good and, instead of partaking in the on-board entertainment, I took the opportunity to read through the new book from the start. Fortunately, it all makes sense! Chris had chosen the resort we were staying in, Turtle Beach on the south coast, and I have to say I was very impressed. Lovely location, nice beach and attentive staff, all you need for a relaxing holiday.

I had taken my Liberty Sands trilogy of books with me as I wanted to take some new photos of the books in an exotic location; particularly ‘If He Really Loved Me’, as it was partly set in Barbados.

After we finished photographing the books, I decided to leave them in the hotel book case for people to borrow – less than an hour after leaving them there, they had all gone, much to the disappointment of Susan (pictured), a lady we had made friends with on our second day, as she wanted to read them.

All was not lost, she downloaded them to her Kindle and spent the rest of the holiday updating me on where she was in the story!

Luckily she was enjoying the books, as did the ladies who had initially borrowed them too. Another holiday-maker called Katy also managed to pick up ‘Life’s a Beach and Then…’ after it had been returned to the bookcase, because she had seen my tweet about them being there before she left the UK.

We had a lovely holiday, which included a trip to Crystal Cove resort, where Chris and I stayed nine years ago to celebrate our thirtieth anniversary of living together. It was quite a journey on the ‘boogie’ bus and I had forgotten just how many people the driver likes to cram on to the bus… sardines spring to mind!

I also got to hold a green monkey. One of the locals came to our beach every day with his pet monkey, Bruce, on a harness and lead. He was really cute, particularly when he spotted the Kipling furry monkey on my beach bag!

I am always mindful of taking care of my skin on holiday – mostly because I am scared of Alison Young – so I thought I would list the products I took with me that helped prevent me from doing too much damage to my skin:

If you saw me on-air yesterday, you will have seen that I still have a good colour despite the high SPF – so don’t be afraid of the high SPFs.

It was a shame I didn’t have the new Ultrasun SPF30 with the built-in tan activator, but it only launched yesterday on QVC. What a great idea for my next holiday – you can get one for your face and one for your body.

For my hair, I took a travel size of the Philip Kingsley Coconut Breeze Elasticiser (which was the beauty Product of the Month last month). It has now sold out in that fragrance, but you can still get the unfragranced litre size online.

Mindful of mosquitos, I took the Australian Bodycare Skinwash in French Lavender, with tea tree oil. I have kept it carefully hidden from ‘him indoors’ at home, but now he has discovered it I am clearly going to have to order more!

On to my face. I use Liz Earle Instant Boost, followed by L’Occitane Divine Cream before going to dinner. I also used my old favourite Decleor Serum Hydratenseur around the eye area.

I seem to have passed the Alison Young scrutiny at work yesterday i.e. she didn’t tell me off for being too tanned!

Talking of beauty products, it’s time to announce the winner of my Elemis competition. We had over 800 entries, but there can only be one winner…

Congratulations to Jean Cairns who correctly stated that Keeley Aydin is our Elemis guest. Enjoy the products Jean.

So, having come back to work yesterday, I am now off for three days at a writing retreat near Bristol with Debbie Flint. I managed to write another 10,000 words while I was in Barbados, so only another 10,000 or so to go – which I hope to get done this weekend.

I didn’t write on the flight back as it was a night flight, instead, I watched two movies: ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ (which I thought was anything but!) and ‘Bridget Jones’ Baby’, which was very entertaining. I still haven’t been to see ‘LaLa Land’ – is it as good as the hype?

Have a great weekend and I’ll see you at 11am Monday morning and for the Lunchtime Show with Charlie, who I haven’t actually laid eyes on yet this year!

Check the blog on my website www.juliarobertsauthor.com at some point next week, when I will be revealing the cover of my new book.

Much love,
Julia x

These photographs bring back memories of my trip to Barbados years ago now what a beautiful Island this is the people are so friendly to visitors we took a bus on one of the days and travelled all around the island also managed to get test cricket tickets from one of the locals (at no extra charge) and had a great day especially as England won .

      Hi Joyce
You are so right, not only is Barbados beautiful but the people are very friendly. On the boogie bus we weren’t sure which bus stop to get off at so, in both directions, we had to ask the locals for help. They were very helpful. I think maybe the cricket is on there now? – not sure though as it’s not my game!

Hi Julia and welcome back from your hols. It certainly sounds like you had a wonderful relaxing break. I had to laugh at your trip out on the bus. It seems as if most other countries seem to adopt the cram them all in system! We experienced similar last year when we were in Ischia. There you have to purchase a ticket before you get on and once on the bus you have to validate it on a machine near the driver. We had embarked through a door near the back and like you we were like sardines so everyone was passing the tickets overhead down the bus! What an experience.
I haven’t seen the 2 films you saw on your return journey but did go to see La La land. I was left disappointed I’m afraid – felt it was an average film and definitely overhyped. Didn’t feel like there was any chemistry between the lead characters, instantly forgettable tunes. That’s just my opinion though.
    Best wishes Denise x

      Hello Denise
Thanks for your thoughts on La La Land – I’ve heard very mixed reviews, a bit like Marmite – love it or hate it! I probably will still go and see it as my friend wants to.
Sounds like there was a lot of trust going on on your bus in Ischia passing the tickets around. The worst thing on ours was when someone at the back of the bus needed to get off! We all got very ‘friendly’ if you know what I mean!

Dear Julia, so glad you had a great break. I bit the bullet and ordered the Philip Kingsley elastiicizer. Of all the beautiful things at qvc, this is my first purchase and I hope it improves my hair! Now I know how easy and efficient the whole process is I will definitely dip in more (I particularly adore honora). I will also check out your books as my tastes seem to have changed. I always read nonfiction but last holiday I was struggling.

      Hello Tanya
Welcome to the QVC ‘club’! How are you getting on with the PK Elasticizer? I just managed to get the Coconut Breeze in the litre size before it sold out – reminds me of holiday. I mentioned you (not by name) during my Links of London show – I wonder if you were watching?
If you do try my novels, I hope you will like them – maybe use the Look Inside feature on Amazon to check out the first few chapters?
Hope you find a nice piece of Honora
      Love

    Hi Julia,
Haven’t commented on your blog for a while now as I’ve had a horrible few weeks with things going wrong with the house plus had a car accident at the end of January. Just when I get straight something else goes wrong! I’m afraid to say everything is OK now!! Anyway, hope you had a lovely relaxing break. I thought I hadn’t seen you on air for a while. It ‘ s good to chill out and recharge the batteries. I hope to get away sometime soon as me and hubby haven’t been for a while now. I must say the break looked as if it did the job as you looked really well and rested.
Well I’m off to see if there are any Skechers left in stock ready for Spring.
All the best Tina S. X

      Hello Tina
So sorry to hear things haven’t been too good for you – hope you’re okay after the car accident. I know what you mean about tempting fate but fingers crossed.
We did have a really relaxing break – I did do dome writing but restricted myself to a couple of hours a day when I would have been sitting in the shade anyway.
Hope you managed to get some Skechers – there were some really nice EMU spring styles on air today!

Barbados looks beautiful Julia. I also enjoyed Bridget Jones baby and I agree with a previous post by Denise regarding la la land. You seem far too busy to waste time watching something so over hyped ( that’s just my opinion). Hope you enjoyed the writers retreat with Debbie

      Hi Veronica
Barbados is beautiful and quite different on all four coastlines! It seems there is a consensus forming on La La Land!
The writer’s retreat was mostly good – didn’t really get to spend enough time with Debs as we were both busy writing but met some nice people

I thought I saw you at the Entrance near your hotel glad you both had a good break, I used the Ultra Sun 20 as usual and stayed under the Umbrella except when I wandered over to Dover Beach and Southern Palms now home having constant problems with my face skin condition dry and tight despite using Declore Aroma Night at night under my Lulu time Bomb night any ideas?

      Hi Trisha Ann
You should have come and said hello, we’re very friendly! Where were you staying?
Regarding your skin – have you tried the Decleor Aromessence solaire? It is probably the most oily of the aromessences so you can definitely use it on its own. How your skin settles down

Simon is away at the moment and we don’t get our schedules more than three weeks in advance. I’m really hoping to do more shows with him this year as I miss the banter.

Dear Julia, I did watch the links show (in between getting meals ready) and I did hear your mention of Philip Kingsley and jewellery so thank you so much! Incidentally I love links of London and have the original sweetie bracelet that was a present years ago, and now i love the look of the xs one. I ordered the elasticicer on the very last day of the offer. I put it on at night and sleep in it and wash in the morning. My hair honestly is so much better and I have been able to leave washing it for a day. I have naturally loose curly hair which was just turning to frizz. This product has given it lovely body. Thanks so much for your help.

Sorry I haven’t replied to you earlier. I don’t often check for comments on old blogs and tend to rely on my copywriter flagging it for me. Glad you liked the mention and pleased you are enjoying your PK Elasticiser. I’ve just recommended it to my best friend and she is liking the results too.

Good to hear you got the decorating finished. Do you do Twitter? If so you could tweet me some pictures of your house on @JuliaRobertsTV.
I’ve heard of the Crane Hotel – it’s on the south coast I think?

Hi Julia, I have read all your books and enjoyed them all. We have just got back from Tenerife and took your short story book and enjoyed it too. The thing I like about your books is that all the chapters are not too long. I have just tried to order your new book from Amazon and it is only for a Kindle, that’s no problem as my husband has got one, but my other books were paperback. Will your new book only be on the Kindle as I like to pass my books on to friends. Pat.

      Hi Pat,
I am so pleased that you have enjoyed all my books so far and Time for a Short Story too. Alice in Theatreland is out in paperback on 27th June and should be available to pre-order in the next couple of weeks. I’m glad you pass them on – keep spreading the word!
