What a treat to have a Bank Holiday when I wasn’t working and the sun was shining!
We made the most of it by heading to nearby Windsor for lunch with Chris’s sister, Linda, before she went back to Australia on Tuesday. We walked alongside the River Thames and had thought about going on a rowing boat, but the queue was a bit on the long side so we opted for a round of mini golf instead.
We were just about to pay the full amount, when Sophie spotted there were concessions for senior citizens.
Linda is the same age as me, give or take a few weeks, and Chris was 62 at that point so we made a saving of £3! Despite no fewer than three ‘hole in ones’ I still managed to come last, but it was still hugely enjoyable. Do you recognise the top I’m wearing? I may have mentioned once or twice that I am a big fan of Together.
Linda had arrived at ours the previous evening and, because the weather was so warm, we thought it would be appropriate to have a ‘barbie’! Very nice it was too.
This was after a day spent painting again. The good news, is that the loft area and stairs leading up to it are now ready for the carpets’ arrival on Wednesday.
Not so our bedroom, although I’m pretty sure it will be. When I got home from work yesterday, the ceiling had been painted and apparently the plan is to do the walls today – I’m glad I’m working! We’ve all worked really hard to ensure the decorating is finished by the carpet-fitting deadline.
Chris even had to muck in on his birthday on Wednesday, although we did let him finish early to get ready for dinner. In the evening, we went to a local Italian restaurant, who are quite generous with the Grappa. Apparently it’s good for the digestion, but I gave it a miss as I don’t like the taste.
We didn’t have dessert, as the traditional chocolate birthday cake was waiting at home. It was just in the shape of a heart – not a watermelon or handbag or sandwich. I’m referring to The Great British Bake Off, which is back on TV but now on Channel 4. Did you watch it? I thought the new presenting team did a great job – just goes to show that none of us is indispensable.
Anyway, back to my cake; Sophie had been teasing Chris all evening about the candles she had bought to decorate it. If you follow me on Instagram (@juliagroberts) or we’re friends on Facebook, you will have seen the full message… but I’ve cleaned it up a bit for my QVC blog.
Sophie certainly does have a wicked sense of humour.
Chris didn’t really have any proper presents to open, as we decided we were going to club together and buy him some designer glasses. Until now, he has always bought the ‘cheapie’ glasses over the counter, so we thought it was about time he had a proper prescription pair. He’ll need an eye test first, and then we can order him the Tom Ford frames he has chosen.
I did get him a couple of bits from QVC to open on the day. I ordered the Molton Brown Black Peppercorn body wash in the supersize – it came in a duo with the Gingerlily… I wonder who will get to use that?! I also bought him a Joe Browns T-shirt which fits perfectly.
So, it was another action-packed five days off – honestly, it sometimes feels like I come back to work for a rest. I had an hour of Liz Earle yesterday and, yet again, they did rather well in the QVC Beauty Excellence Awards hosted by Ali Young and Craig last night. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners – good to see one of my hero products, Phillip Kingsley Elasticizer, in there.
Another winner was L’Occitane, who won the award for Best Hand and Foot Product with their Intense Hand Balm and Foot Cream duo. It’s worth staying up or tuning in early for their Today’s Special Value which launches tonight at midnight, as I have a feeling it is going to be very popular.
Almond Shower Oil and Hand Cream, Bath Foam, a large bar of soap in the milk fragrance, and a travel size of my favourite foot cream. I’m presenting the 11am show tomorrow and I’m predicting busy phone lines.
Although it is my working weekend, I’m not in on Sunday as I was asked if I would mind swapping to work Diamonique Day on Tuesday – how could I miss that? The Today’s Special Value is a fabulous watch and tennis bracelet set.
If you’ve already started thinking about Christmas presents – well, it is September already, the year is flying by – it’s presented in a gift box. I’ll wear them on-air over the next few days, to give you an early peek of them.
It’s a shame the Alison Cork Today’s Special Value didn’t come after my bedroom has been decorated, as the bedspread would have looked great against my pale grey walls… yes, more grey. I may not end up with 50 shades, but I won’t be far off. I know what I’m going to be doing on Sunday, more gloss painting, but I hope you’ll be enjoying a more relaxing time.
As always, here is a sneak preview at next week’s Look of the Week on the QVC Style channel, which is live every weekday at 4pm.
